Frampton vs. Walsh

Forums:

Who's "better"?

They both got into using that "talk box" pedal thing.  Deeew you feewl, deeew you feewl. . .

But Frampton stared in the awful Sgt. Peppers movie.   Advantage - Walsh.

Walsh is a rock star and a hell of a guitarist.

Frampton was a pop star, BUT also a tremendous studio player.

Two different animais IMO

Joe Walsh

Joe Walsh, for sure - but Frampton was more than just a studio player. He was a big part of Humble Pie and his live playing with them was spectacular. Sure he veered off into pop afterwards. Joe Walsh joined the Eagles - which The Dude is right about - so that knocks him down a peg. However - his stuff with James Gang, his stuff with Barnstorm and the fucking masterpiece "In The City" from "The Warriors" clearly places him above Frampton.

They both shine real bright in their own way. Glad to have seen them both and have 'em around.

Poor Frampton, though, who is 69, was diagnosed last year with a degenerative muscle disease called inclusion body myositis, also known as I.B.M. The condition causes muscles to weaken over time but usually does not affect life expectancy. So last year's tour was his last.

Personally, I like Joe Walsh better by a hair or two.

Yeah, was just reading about that today ... at least he's been able to get out and play while he can.

Interesting note from joe Walsh's wiki:

"In December 1971, Walsh left the James Gang. He was invited to move to England and join Humble Pie by Steve Marriott, since Peter Frampton had left the band, but declined his offer."

Both got to be a Ringo all star but only one of em had a guest star role on Baa Baa Black Sheep/Black Sheep Squadron

My friends mom used to buy us beer in high school and let us have parties at her home and near by woods. These were big blow outs and a tradition set with his older brothers and their friends. Joe Vitale (Walsh’s longtime drummer and ex am boy duke) was also a local neighbor, and during Joe and Joes Kent State years hung out together and eventually started the band barnstorm. Any way at one of the house parties Walsh got drunk as fuck and fell and broke his nose on the curb. I was not there, too young ,but heard the story many times from my friends brother and friends.

Although i I love Joe Walsh Frampton wins on strength of song writing.

Humble Pie's third album, Humble Pie with  Frampton is one of my favorite albums.

Hmm - strength of songwriting you say? I think Walsh actually had more hits than Frampton did.

Joe Walsh & Barnstorm touring The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get, warmed up by Marshall Tucker at their absolute finest, Academy of Music, 1974, first 30 minutes in the lounge downstairs, mind left body heading back to the seats, to this day one of the very best shows I ever saw.

Frampton is great but never approached the greatness I saw on 14th street that night in 1974.

Hits do not equal well written songs imo 6

All Night Long

Lifes Been Good

Some of Joe’s biggest hits, but strong writing, not so much

And did the Eagles dilute Joe Walsh?

I say say yes, but it could of been the booze

One one hand it's not really a fair comparison, as one was a hugely successful band leader as well as lead guitarist while the other was/is mostly a sideman, but on the other hand they're basically the same, one a bit more rockin' perhaps than the other but both mostly relying on the songs they're playing and of course both always playing exactly the same thing every single night they've ever played.

True artists, or professional craftsmen?

I give Frampton more credit for having his own career while Walsh probably had more fun just fuckin' around with the Eagles.

As players? Who cares? They're both really good but like most professional musicians they're both pre-programed regurgitators.

Give me the player who takes chances, since then there's the chance for true inspiration, and even if they fuck it up I like the effort so much more, and neither of those guys remotely qualify as chance takers.

And did the Eagles dilute Joe Walsh?<<<

Perhaps another way of looking at it:  the Eagles made him more "accessible".

Joe Walsh is more fun.

James Gang live has some kick ass extended jams that push the envelope:

James Gang Live.jpg

Yes, James Gang pushes the envelope ... but kinda makes the case that why couldn't Walsh have imported more of this approach with other material & ensembles?  I think a lot of musicians might have an epiphany of a "rebirth" if they were willing & ready to take the risk to shuffle the deck and such with giant catalogs.

My crazy Genesis cousin just posted these (Phil Collins, Roger Daltrey, Peter Frampton, Tony Banks and Michael Rutherford.):

Joe Walsh has stage presence.

In the City and All Night Long are my favorites

Frampton Comes Alive was recorded at Winterland though.

Almost forgot about 'Eyes of the Confesser'...

James Gang was very good, but so was Humble Pie, and all of that was a loooooong time ago.

There's no doubt that Walsh is a rippin' guitar player; I guess for me it's always been a bit disappointing what he delivers compared to what he's got. I get that with the Eagles their thing has always been very rehearsed, very clean & very well-played songs every night, but even the Walsh solo shows I've seen have felt formulaic and preprogrammed.

I never expected him to be a Jimi/SRV ripper or a Jerry Garcia/Trey type of improvisationalist, but even a (IMO) rather vanilla, song-based band like Wilco allows Nels Cline to cut loose. He doesn't play the same solos every night, and I wonder if he would have taken the gig if they wanted him to.

(Because of that I take Cline as a player over either of these choices).

I don't begrudge anyone if they choose to use their skills to go for the money, especially if they've worked hard to get to that point, but it seems that after Walsh joined the Eagles he has always chosen to take it easy.

(See what I did there?)

But Frampton stared in the awful Sgt. Peppers movie.   Advantage - Walsh.>>>>

From Glide Magazine....

2006: Walsh took the James Gang on the road, charging $70 for a balcony seat to see the newly reunited band play short unrehearsed sets.

Fan reply:The James Gang show I caught at Red Rocks last year was indeed short at 85 minutes

2007: Walsh has recruited JD and the Straight Shot to open most shows on his solo tour. The “JD” referenced is none other than James Dolan, also known as The Guy Who Killed the Knicks and the Rangers. Check out some of JD and the Straight Shot’s music, and you’ll hear a bar band that shouldn’t be opening for Particle let alone Joe Walsh. What a complete disservice to his fans.

Advantage- Frampton

hmmm - another way to look at it ( these threads are pretty silly, and very subjective)

pick out the outstanding night for each, then ....

who reached the highest high, one time

Walsh has a deeper and more interesting catalogue than Frampton.  Humble Pie is okay, but Frampton had Steve Marriott sharing the guitar duties, while it was all Joe Walsh in the James Gang.  Frampton shit the bed after Frampton Comes Alive with the atrocious I'm In You.  Joe Walsh never disgraced himself that badly.   Joe Walsh had an affair with Stevie Nicks, while Frampton's primary fluffer was Cameron Crowe.

Inspired by this thread, I pulled this out of my record collection the other night and gave it a spin on the turntable:

HumblePie.jpg

It was good for sure, but even with the Marriott/Frampton double guitar attack, still think the James Gang's commercial live release was stronger.

>>>Joe Walsh had an affair with Stevie Nicks

That would have been quite the debauched event, but did Walsh ever get into a life and death, hand to hand struggle with Steven Tyler:

 Frampton Strangled_0.jpg

And Frampton rocked the white overalls and pink shirt combo like no other:

Frampton in overalls.jpg

Which is more likely to play the same exact notes every night?

I'm guessing Walsh, otherwise Henley would've fired him.

Seems the Frampton Walsh question boils down to James Gang vs Humble Pie. Two of the greatest ever.

Love that Pie but Joe with the James Gang was the vehicle that took me where I needed to go more often.

Possibly the best Stevie Nicks joke of this century is in the Halloween episode of Bless The Harts.

No spoilers.  Best heard in context.

Yeah, the way the thread is going but, Walsh is no way comparable to the vocals of  Marriot .

In my opinion.

Bill walsh

right heathen?

stevie  nicks for the landslide...

does ones age weigh in on these opinions expressed?

Frampton a lightweight fluffer

And what Album idid your brother biy you for one of your first albums

THE MOTHRRFUCKING James gang bitches.,,

Do you feel?

Joe Walsh definitely has more lines on his face.

My brother left his James Gang LP behind when he moved out.

But he bought me Waiting For Columbus and Hillbilly Jazz.

Forgot to post where to get it:

https://store.frampton.com/by-band/peter-frampton-73/apparel/t-shirts/fr...

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank.

^Looks like a lot of people are touring those same places. They get all the shows.

If John Mayer left Dead & Co, who would you rather replace him of the two?   Joe's great, but how well he'd play on the Dead's material i'm not so sure about...   meanwhile, I think Peter could fit in much better, as he seems to be the better modal player of the two.

(Shakedown street with a talk box, don't give Bobby ideas!)

Frampton Comes Alive is one of most successful live albums of all time.

Joe Walsh's solo efforts have not been nearly as successful .

I would rather see Joe Walsh perform but I think Frampton's got him

IMHO of cours.

Frampton ran off the stage in htfd, broke his wrist, and still played the show.  Cocaine fueled.

and the show goes on.

Dedicated.
