Joe Walsh, for sure - but Frampton was more than just a studio player. He was a big part of Humble Pie and his live playing with them was spectacular. Sure he veered off into pop afterwards. Joe Walsh joined the Eagles - which The Dude is right about - so that knocks him down a peg. However - his stuff with James Gang, his stuff with Barnstorm and the fucking masterpiece "In The City" from "The Warriors" clearly places him above Frampton.
Poor Frampton, though, who is 69, was diagnosed last year with a degenerative muscle disease called inclusion body myositis, also known as I.B.M. The condition causes muscles to weaken over time but usually does not affect life expectancy. So last year's tour was his last.

Yeah, was just reading about that today ... at least he's been able to get out and play while he can.
"In December 1971, Walsh left the James Gang. He was invited to move to England and join Humble Pie by Steve Marriott, since Peter Frampton had left the band, but declined his offer."
"In December 1971, Walsh left the James Gang. He was invited to move to England and join Humble Pie by Steve Marriott, since Peter Frampton had left the band, but declined his offer."
My friends mom used to buy us beer in high school and let us have parties at her home and near by woods. These were big blow outs and a tradition set with his older brothers and their friends. Joe Vitale (Walsh’s longtime drummer and ex am boy duke) was also a local neighbor, and during Joe and Joes Kent State years hung out together and eventually started the band barnstorm. Any way at one of the house parties Walsh got drunk as fuck and fell and broke his nose on the curb. I was not there, too young ,but heard the story many times from my friends brother and friends.
Although i I love Joe Walsh Frampton wins on strength of song writing.
Joe Walsh & Barnstorm touring The Smoker You Drink The Player You Get, warmed up by Marshall Tucker at their absolute finest, Academy of Music, 1974, first 30 minutes in the lounge downstairs, mind left body heading back to the seats, to this day one of the very best shows I ever saw.
Frampton is great but never approached the greatness I saw on 14th street that night in 1974.
One one hand it's not really a fair comparison, as one was a hugely successful band leader as well as lead guitarist while the other was/is mostly a sideman, but on the other hand they're basically the same, one a bit more rockin' perhaps than the other but both mostly relying on the songs they're playing and of course both always playing exactly the same thing every single night they've ever played.
True artists, or professional craftsmen?
I give Frampton more credit for having his own career while Walsh probably had more fun just fuckin' around with the Eagles.
As players? Who cares? They're both really good but like most professional musicians they're both pre-programed regurgitators.
Give me the player who takes chances, since then there's the chance for true inspiration, and even if they fuck it up I like the effort so much more, and neither of those guys remotely qualify as chance takers.
Yes, James Gang pushes the envelope ... but kinda makes the case that why couldn't Walsh have imported more of this approach with other material & ensembles? I think a lot of musicians might have an epiphany of a "rebirth" if they were willing & ready to take the risk to shuffle the deck and such with giant catalogs.
James Gang was very good, but so was Humble Pie, and all of that was a loooooong time ago.
There's no doubt that Walsh is a rippin' guitar player; I guess for me it's always been a bit disappointing what he delivers compared to what he's got. I get that with the Eagles their thing has always been very rehearsed, very clean & very well-played songs every night, but even the Walsh solo shows I've seen have felt formulaic and preprogrammed.
I never expected him to be a Jimi/SRV ripper or a Jerry Garcia/Trey type of improvisationalist, but even a (IMO) rather vanilla, song-based band like Wilco allows Nels Cline to cut loose. He doesn't play the same solos every night, and I wonder if he would have taken the gig if they wanted him to.
(Because of that I take Cline as a player over either of these choices).
I don't begrudge anyone if they choose to use their skills to go for the money, especially if they've worked hard to get to that point, but it seems that after Walsh joined the Eagles he has always chosen to take it easy.
But Frampton stared in the awful Sgt. Peppers movie. Advantage - Walsh.>>>>
From Glide Magazine....
2006: Walsh took the James Gang on the road, charging $70 for a balcony seat to see the newly reunited band play short unrehearsed sets.
Fan reply:The James Gang show I caught at Red Rocks last year was indeed short at 85 minutes
2007: Walsh has recruited JD and the Straight Shot to open most shows on his solo tour. The “JD” referenced is none other than James Dolan, also known as The Guy Who Killed the Knicks and the Rangers. Check out some of JD and the Straight Shot’s music, and you’ll hear a bar band that shouldn’t be opening for Particle let alone Joe Walsh. What a complete disservice to his fans.
Walsh has a deeper and more interesting catalogue than Frampton. Humble Pie is okay, but Frampton had Steve Marriott sharing the guitar duties, while it was all Joe Walsh in the James Gang. Frampton shit the bed after Frampton Comes Alive with the atrocious I'm In You. Joe Walsh never disgraced himself that badly. Joe Walsh had an affair with Stevie Nicks, while Frampton's primary fluffer was Cameron Crowe.
If John Mayer left Dead & Co, who would you rather replace him of the two? Joe's great, but how well he'd play on the Dead's material i'm not so sure about... meanwhile, I think Peter could fit in much better, as he seems to be the better modal player of the two.
