Well, he had two, I guess. He's in the hospital and fortunately his speech wasn't affected, but I know next to nothing about strokes. Mom said she noticed he was off a few days before the main event and had him do the stroke indicator test: smile, hold your arms up etc test and he passed with flying colors, so she just thought he was having a bad day, but two days later he hit literally the deck. He wanted her to take him to a so-cal hospital, only they're in the mid-west currently; so she did the test again, he still passed - but she called Paramedics anyhow this time. The hospital tests determined he'd had the two strokes. I'm not looking for advice here, but I just wanted to say while the FAST test might save lives, just call an ambulance if you have reason to believe someone is having a stroke. I feel bad for mom, she did everything you're supposed to do, but two days passed because she didn't trust her initial instincts (and my dad is a stubborn boor! I'm so not surprised she dropped it after getting him to go through the test alone must've been an uphill battle).

Sorry to hear the news, Willows, but I'm glad that you shared it with us.
I hope that everything goes well for your parents. Any time someone goes to the hospital, it's not great, but it especially sucks when you're traveling.
And thanks for the FAST advice.

It certainly could've been worse. I'm glad she didn't take no for an answer the second time. Dad's doing fairly well considering, but mom feels awful that she let it go the first time because he passed the FAST test. The message is pay attention to your spidey senses, if you feel like something is off get help right away.

Thanks again, folks. Fortunately or unfortunately my job is taking up all the rental space in my head lately because my hours have been nuts and I'm always tired. I appreciate the kind thoughts a lot
I'm going to try to wrap my head around it all later today when I'm off work. Not sure if mom wants me to come out there and help or if she'd rather not have another family member dividing her attention right now.
Atiex I might just take you up on your offer, I have no idea what to expect next. New territory for me as my parents have both been the picture of health until yesterday. Besides I wouldn't mind catching up with you and hearing how the hell you've been.

If his speech is unaffected,
If his speech is unaffected, he's lucky and his prognosis is good. Lots of people have "mini" strokes and never know it until a CT is taken, often years after the fact. Perhaps this is what happened with your father.
I'm not in the medical field but my wife has been for 26 years. Though her specialty is orthopedics she is pretty knowledgeable about all organ systems. The above came from her.

Hi all. Quick update. I spoke
Hi all. Quick update. I spoke with my father yesterday on the phone. He's not sure when he'll be leaving the hospital but he said he's going to be doing three hours stroke patient therapy a day at their PT facility. He also spoke enthusiastically about their incoming house guests at their lake house this weekend so I don't know what he's thinking - but I'm glad he has a super-positive, proactive approach. I did notice a very slight slur to his voice, and he complained that he can't feel or move his left arm and leg. Dad's a USAF vet; fortunately, his gov't enhanced fighter pilot/officer ego won't allow him to stay down for long if he can do anything to change it. We joked that he has the best excuse ever to listen to all the Bob Dylan and Poco he wants to...mom made it a rule that he couldn't play Dylan around her because she can't stand his voice and dad cranks it to eleven. My continued gratitude for the well-wishes, kind zoners. You're the best!
ps: Believe it or not, Robert Hunter is the reason my mom knew about the FAST test. He posted it and I sent it to my folks, so, thanks Hunter for having a part to play in saving my dad's life.

Mornin' KK, thanks for your well-wishes. Nothing new to report but no news is good news. Mom enlisted a family friend who has some pull at the hospital to advocate for dad, I guess mom didn't think he was getting adequate care. I'm just glad she's not taking it all on herself.
