Free Husky / Huskies to good home

Forums:

No, this is not a Disco Stu thread. My sister passed away unexpectedly last week and we have two dogs to get adopted. Not as easy as I first thought. We have tried calling Husky Rescues in the Maryland area but the response has not been good. The Zone seems to like Huskies. All suggestions, contacts, new ideas welcome. We're  getting desperate. Thanks in advance for any assistance, Alan R

**************************************************************************

They are gorgeous dogs. Here's what we know about them:

1) Siberian Husky. Male neutered. 3 years 6 months. Red/White from breeder in Texas, ID number can probably be traced. 68 lbs. All shots up to date -- requires meds (phenobarbital) twice a day for epilepsy. AVID chip

.Red1.jpg

2) Siberian Husky. Female, spayed. 2 years 2 months. Grey/White from breeder in Texas, ID number can probably be traced. 42 lbs. All shots up to date. AVID chip.

grey1.jpg

The dogs have spent most of the the last month at their vet. All records available.

They are now at a boarding facility a few miles outside Baltimore. All records available.

They are non-aggressive, do not bite or snap. Vet techs and kennel people gush that they are reeeeeally nice dogs.

They lived peaceably with two cats. Have not been around young children.

They are undisciplined, untrained, and crave attention. They pull on lease and jump up to lick. They just want to be loved.

Free to good home. Ideally we'd like to keep them together, but know that is probably not going to happen.

They are gorgeous and a huge part of me wants to say, "I'll take them!" But I'm a single mom with 3 boys who are pretty crazy to begin with...

I have friends and family up that way... do you mind if i share this on facebook?

Sorry for your loss.

Nice looking dogs, hope you are successful.

These pics may be a little dated, but can't be too old, as the dogs are not all that old. They are much more fluffy now (especially the grey one).

Oh, and one more thing (a Zone tradition...>>>Cancer Sucks<<<).

Red2.jpg

grey2.jpg

I don't mind any anything that might find them a good home. I've never posted on Facebook, so it that's the way it's done nowadays...sure.

Ideally someone would drive over to the kennel and check them out. It's located just off I-70 about 20 minutes outside Baltimore.

The kennel people said they would help us screen potential owners and my very intuitive wife has to approve, too. Having room for the dog/dogs to run around is imperative -- these are obviously not apartment dogs.

If I was convinced it's a good situation, I would probably deliver them up to 100 miles away, but sight unseen doesn't seem like the best alternative.

I'm very sorry about your sister, Alan.

Those beautiful dogs are lucky that you care about them and are willing to try to find them good home(s). I hope someone shows up soon. I know someone (high school friend) in Baltimore who seems to participate in dog rescue things - I'll send her a link to this thread.

Yes, cancer sucks! Fuck cancer! Damn it.

I will give a Fine Home to the female Hüsky,  if that can work out.  120 acres of Farm & Forest,   no free-range roaming,  Dogs sleep indoors and get tons of exercise.

My current male Hüsky might get agitated with another male in the picture,  but he likes Girls.  He's up to date on vaccinations, neutered,  and socialized with other Dogs, Kids and people of all types.  His diet is grain-free kibble mixed with a taste of grain-free wet food,  with occasional turkey or chicken mixed in.

I'll meet halfway between Jerseyland & Baltimore for 'meet & greet' to see if they get along.  I imagine they will be Happy together.

So,  there's an option.  You can email me if you like:  internationalfirewood (at) geeeemail etc.

I sent a message to my old friend; how will she get in touch with you if she has any help for you?

Anyone else in the DC / Maryland / Delaware / Virginia area,  step up and keep this Hüsky pair together as a team.

These Dogs are the most Awesome pet Canines,  and besides the Shedding,  extremely clean and well-behaved.

Not for those who don't get outdoors much.  They like to run,  swim,  go places.  Terrible watchdogs;  they love everyone.

Sru, here's your chance to start your very own sled team.

Surely the Gender Issues can be worked out.

And here is a link to the 'Jersey Sands Sled Dog Racing Association'

https://www.facebook.com/JSSDRA

There are similar Sled-Dawg groups all over the USA and beyond,  so if you did some research,  you might find people in Maryland who like Hüskies.

In my experience,  the Mushers tend to have more than one Siberian Husky,  and take very nice care of them.  Actually,  they all seem to have at least a half-dozen or so.  It would be Super-Cool if those Dogs got the opportunity to stay together,  and also join up with their fellow Sled-Dogs.

I could make a telephone call or two,  and possibly get you in touch with some of the Sled-Dawg folks.  No,  they are not exploited Dogs.  They actually really, really enjoy that sort of activity.  Perhaps that is a fortuitous option to explore ??

(edit)

Mr. Surf,  saw your post after I typed this one.  I can afford to house one more Hüsky,  but not an entire Team.  However,  those Musher folks have suitable facilities for multiple Northern Dogs.  They have already figured out how to contain,  feed and exercise the Feisty fiends.

https://www.sleddogcentral.com/clubs_usa.htm

So there's a more National link,  with all sorts of information.  Anyone could make a few phone calls and be in touch with the Sled Dawg Cartel.

Attending these Musher events and having my Hound participate,  he had a total Blast and loved it.  It's liek, that's what he was Born for.

I get that 'the pair' are a bit under - trained,  but when you put them into the Pack,  the other Sled - Hounds get them 'up to speed' and teach them.

From my friend in Baltimore:

"I think I found the right group- Harnessed to Hope Northern Breed Rescue based out of PA. I can't reach a human. From their message it sounds like they will help to place owner surrender dogs but cannot foster them until adoption - they have to stay with their family. Doesn't work if the owner is deceased obviously. The web is www.nbrerescue.com
The phone is 866-657-3728

I am at the doctor's office & will stop by the county shelter on my way home. They work with a lot of breed rescue groups and may be helpful.

I also have a friend very active in hound rescue and will ask her for any good contacts."

Alan, I'll let you know if there's more info.

Sorry about your sister Alan.  This is a very nice offer and your efforts are kind way to take care of her memory. Maybe helping like this it will bring you some peace.

The dogs are both super cute.  Nice of you to consider one Stu!  Wish I could help.  I think All 4 Paws is a good  no kill rescue online shelter. They work from south Carolina up to PA.  Maybe they can help.   https://www.all4pawsrescue.com/about

Good Luck and Hope The 2 Stay Together - Condolences Alan

I did place a telephone call to a Lady I met at one of the Dog-Race events,  letting her know that a pair of Huskies are looking for a Nice Home.

pasleddogclub.com

She & her Husband were in Jerseyland,  from out in central PA to participate in the Race event with their 13-14 year old Husky, maybe another.  Above link might work;  they had their Summer campout a couple weeks ago.

Gotta say that all of the folks I've met associated with the Musher scene are the Hugest dog lovers anywhere.  They all coddle their pet Animals and take pride in spoiling them.  If those Hüskies can get hooked up with the right Sledder - enthusiast group,  they will live a happy and healthy Life.

And,  condolences to you and Family.  Sorry for the loss of your Sister.  Hope her pets find a Great home.

Just got back to the Zone (lot going on).

Thank you and will follow up every offer, suggestion.

I just set up a new email account for contact info, so hope it works: misc[at]arhody[you-know-what-goes-here]com

jeez, that's hard to decipher. Lets try it another way:

that'll fool them pesky bots

I did contact the Lady in central PA,  and asked if anyone in her Sled-Dog group might want a pair of Huskies.

So if I hear back,  I will pass along your contact info, if that is OK.

Her name is Liz.

I do know that there's a Husky-rescue group here in NJ with a functional website,  but can't recall their name at the moment.  They are out towards the NJ coast,  maybe Red Bank area.

sorry for your loss, Alan...wish i could help...

lot of good ideas on here , though...

OK --

So I got in touch w/ Prez of JSSDRA and he said that he'd be happy to help re-home those Huskies as far as spreading the word,  posting on 'social media'  and so forth.  He just adopted a new rescue Husky, so the stable is full.  But he knows Husky people who(m) know Husky people,  and so on.

However,  he said that it is Cool for me to pass on his contact info to Alan R and so,  check your email  Mr. Alan R.

Dude's name is Bryan.  It's OK to call before 10 PM Eastern time.

Please don't post that contact info here on VLZ,  thanks.

Sorry to hear about your sister. Hope the dogs get adopted soon. We just lost our dog unexpectedly.....We're on the west coast, so unfortunately it wouldn't work for these 2 for us......

So sorry for your loss, Alan - these are gorgeous dogs

we have to find them homes

the girl is adorable!

Is anyone in touch with the Olsons in Colorado?!

they love dogs and may know someone who could help?

Well, I'd be happy to personally escort the dogs to NedFest in Colorado this weekend or back to my old stomping grounds in Sebastopol anytime, however I'd like to try local first. MD, Del, DC, VA, East PA, South Jersey. But I will take some wallet sized photos with me to Nederland.

But keep those cards and letters coming kids, all resources appreciated.

Condolences, and this is good zoning here.

Condolences Alan to you, family & friends. I love dogs but am not allowed to have them in my complex. Best to you in finding homes.  CANCER SUCKS!

{ { { { ALAN'S SISTER } } } }

This is the good part of VLZ!

Sorry for you loss, Alan. I do hope you can find the right home for those two, together. And kudos to DStu; sounds like some of that networking could pay off!

The shelter I was thinking of is in Matawan NJ

Husky House
391 Route 34
Matawan, NJ 07747
Located between the bike shop and the dry cleaner

https://www.huskyhouse.org

They will 'courtesy post' your dogs meaning 'advertise as available from owner'  but seem shy about bringing more dogs into the shelter.

https://www.huskyhouse.org/about/surrender

But it's advertising for free,  and people going to the site are looking for pet Huskies.  Couldn't hurt to fill out the surrender form.

Another Siberian rescue in PA  "Tails Of The Tundra" and they will advertise for you as a 'Referral dog'.

Their site has photos of the cute pups available which you can click on.  Also resources of other Husky rescue / foster / no-kill shelter.

http://siberescue.com/adopt/

Would be totally awesome if they could remain together as a pair.  It's a big bonus that they like Cats.

Another one in Horsham,  PA:   Delaware Valley Siberian Husky Rescue

http://www.siberianhuskyrescue.org

877-876-2644

I don't know if they are the same group as 'Tails of the Tundra' who(m) also seem to be in Horsham,  PA.

Huskie Resue Update:

We're in contact with three different folks who have expressed interest in the younger grey/white dog (pictured). The pretty girls get all the attention!

The older "red"/white male (3 1/2) with epilepsy is not getting any inquiries yet, but we are widening the search zone thanks to suggestions from DStu and others.

Thank you all for your generous and heartfelt wishes and assistance.

Mead is on me if you run into me at NedFest!

In My Family at a Time WE Had Annie the Mother And Shanda the Daughter BOTH Amazing Loveable Golden Retrievers Absolutely AmazZing Dogs No way You Seperate That ! RIP Annie and Shanda.

Alan hope the 2 stay together

I love dogs.

Stu's a good dog owner and ZUI's are not a crime.

Sorry about your loss.

I hope the pups find a real good home(s).

Here is a page from an Alaskan Husky breeder explaining some basic realities about the characteristics of these creatures.  Their site also has some tips about diet (they feed raw food and bones, with supplements).  Their dogs are looking pretty good,  so they know stuff.

http://www.aniaksibes.com/wantsh.shtml

Anyone thinking about a Husky should read that page.  These guys are a handful,  but a ton o' Fun.  The main thing is keeping them well-exercised and well-contained.  Mine's only escaped a few times,  so now He's always on two metal leads when outside.  He did not go very far,  as there are nearby attractions.

But they are stupid about roads & cars.  Also, they will chase Horses,  Goats,  Chickens and definitely Sheep.

Nice work, Stu!

I really hope this all works out

I adopted a malamute that was 4 and Henry Kaiser adopted his "sister" Kida...

they did fine and adjusted quickly

sure hope someone shows interest in the male!

Judit- is John Olson on Facebook?

do you have his email?

I ask this because I have no idea what Zoner's only post on the Facebook Zone

Robin and St Mark knew him

I want to show him this post and see if he knows of a good home- thx

John Olson is on Facebook, but we're not Facebook "friends". I don't think he's in Phriends of the Zone group, and I don't have his email address. Robin is indeed friends with him and his wife. I can ask John's wife if they know anyone interested in taking in a husky.

Great, thank you!

Help on the Way!

I sent Robin the info to a few days ago and asked her to pass it on as I am not face book friends with John, she hasn't responded. I tried

I just sent John a Facebook message but don't know if he'll get it since we're not "friends".

Another option that dawned on me --

Make some printed ads w/ photos "Free Huskies"  and hang on bulletin boards at your local-ish Tractor Supply.   there are a few in the Baltimore area,  one in Glen Burnie,  one in Lothan,  one in Chestertown.  I check the ads when I'm in there and whenever there's free Bunnies or Chickens or Dogs,  they go quickly.

Everyone in there is somewhat rural and has open space + Animals.  So,  a good demographic.  Same with "Agway"  if you have some.

Don't know if your local PetCo,  PetSmart or PetValu have bulletin boards,  but it's worth a try.

I would take him but my wife might divorce me if I come home with another pet.

Thanks for trying to reach him, they are husky lovers!

Alan, maybe notify the breeder in Texas to the situation... who knows

I hope you and family and the dogs are doing ok, sending positive vibes!

Alan-

amiright, MDers?

Bumping this

any updates?

here, nextdoor.com is excellent for lost and found pets (practically every day) and finding homes for them

I hope you posted on your local site!

wishing for a positive outcome for all!

Thanks for bumping the thread, Ro. I've been wondering all day about them.

I think that Mr. AlanR was out of town for a while,  but has many opportunities to research.  My belief is that the Goal is to keep the Husky friends together,  which makes a lot of sense.  They are such socially-bonding Canines,  and hate breaking up The Pack.

Mine cries and whines like a Baby after a couple nights at Dog-sitter's house.  They take great care of H.I.M. and have fun outings,  runs & walks,  but despite Hüsky's air of independence and Freedom,  they like to be around their pet Hu-persons.  Those little Kids probably wake H.I.M. up waaaayy too early in the morning to watch cartoons on the TV.

My favorite Dog-sitters are the ones with other Doggies & Kids;  someone is staying home and keeping equilibrium.  It's a safe Space.  There's extra Bacon & Eggs,  and plenty of company.

But he gets Chickens and Havana Cigars  at home,  as many as he likes.  He can sleep in until Noon in the Air - Conditioning,  with no Job to attend.

Anyway,  I will still adopt the Girl,  as I said before.  As long as my Dog and Her get along on a 'meet & greet' basis,  she has a nice cushy place to live.

H.I.M. and H.E.R.??

like ya said, hpfly they stay together , but , hats off DS, for stepping up...

Well, the good news is that the two cats have been adopted and are living together happily with a relative!

The dogs on the other hand, are still in the kennel, happily awaiting an owner.

Dog adoption people it seems from my brief foray into this world, are like many hippies --- well intentioned but weak on the follow thru.

About a third of the respondents initially sent very enthusiastic emails and by the next day or two changed their mind. "My wife said no." "I forgot I was moving." "A stray showed up last night at my doorstep." "Maryland, where is that?"

About a third had no idea about the realities of dog ownership, muchless Husky ownership. They seemed to just want something that was originally expensive and looks cool, for free, and had not considered that these were living beings that required food, a veterinarian, room to move, personal attention, etc. "Huskies? Cool, I want one. I live in a townhouse without a yard and work 12-hour shifts, but I can keep it in this big cat-carrier cage I have all day." "They shed? Whatya mean they shed? I'll just shave them." "I used to have a miniature dachshund when I was growing up, so I know all about Huskies." "It will make a great companion for my little baby." "I don't like walking them and picking up poop, so I'll just let them out to roam around the neighborhood."

Of the remaining serious inquiries from genuine dog people, I was surprised how many people don't read or can't follow simple instructions. Or they expect two dogs just to magically and immediately appear at their doorstep without any questions being asked. Personally, I don't think it's all that much to expect someone to schedule a meet-and-greet with the dogs before adopting them. Or be patient while a few people in line ahead of them check out the dogs. Or to answer few basic screening questions. "If I can't get them today I don't want them." "I can't drive an hour to see them." "Oh, the dog needs meds?" "I'm not going to fill out any application; I already have seven dogs so I definitely know what I'm doing."

So that naturally weeds out the less than ideal dog adopters. But it takes a lot of time to deal with all these folks that probably should stick to goldfish for pets. And unfortunately for us, apparently there is a glut of Huskies on rescue sites and every foster care facility in the tri-state area is full up. Out of a dozen or more "rescues" that we could get ahold of (most are website that only host pictures run by volunteers in their spare time), two offered help. We graciously accepted screening help, but they are very busy and have not gotten to us yet.

So as of today, there are about four folks that have expressed interest in taking both dogs and one of them has actually scheduled a meet-and-greet tomorrow. But he has never owned his own dog before. The others have not yet arranged a time to see the dogs.

Most inquires have been for the 2 year-2 month old female Husky. One woman met the female last week at the kennel, as she wants a companions for her dog. She (the person) seems really nice, but lives in a condo. I put her on hold. I think we can place the female eventually and the local Humane Society will take her if it comes to that.

However, the 3-1/2  year old male Husky that requires phenobarbital twice a day has gotten practically no inquiries. His script  for the meds will cost about $200 - $500 annually, depending on where one gets it filled. The Humane Society will not take him due to his epilepsy (since the facility is unsupervised at night).

We are still trying to honor my sister's wishes and place the two dogs together in the same home, but the wait for the two-dog adopters to act is alienating some of the one-dog people. A few of them are understanding of the situation, though. Hopefully, the train will start moving before we have to break up the pair and get left with the one male.

So we are doing the best we can under the circumstances. We are just throwing money at the problem at the moment and waiting for a miracle - waving one doggy biscuit high up in the air.

buscuit.jpg

Did you post on nextdoor.com?

Tip of the hat to you Alan, Your a good brother.

Good luck with your dog adventure.

yea for the cats!!

itll happen for the dogs as well, Alan...keep that biscuit flying high

Here is yet another option:

If you print up a flyer w/ photos and a brief description of the Huskies,  I can laminate and hang one at the local Dog Park.  I would put my phone # on there and screen potential adopters for suitable living conditions.  I always get comments such as "what a nice doggie" and "I want one of those!"

The demographic is people that regularly bring their dogs to socialize, run  and play.  There are 6-7 Huskies I've met there,  and a couple Malamutes.

Just another possibility.

Thank you for your support kind brothers and sisters. The Zone rocks!  We are mostly still in Internet dog-world and have not yet spread the search out to civilian life with telephone pole posters and flyers but that's not to say we won't if the social media networking approach stagnates. Supposedly we had 1300 FaceBook shares, whatever that means.

It's not so much a lack of interest or inquiries, it's having someone qualified and serious actually show up. Hell, I may end up with a tour of the DiscoStu firewood factory, yet. (Either way I owe Stu, Roshambo and a bevy of other good-hearted Zoners a beverage or two or three, just for all the great ideas.) Much appreciated.

At least the dogs are safe and well cared for. I'm really hoping that Zach and his fiancee take a fancy to both of them tomorrow. They are young and can probably deal... and two Huskies might hone their problem solving skills before they wed.

I will be on a roadtrip to up-up-and then upstate-some-more NY and then to Burlington for the next weekish (guess it's time to revisit the Vermont threads).  I need to get some chisels sharpened and there's a really cool sculpture park up there.. check out these pics:

http://www.coldhollowsculpturepark.com/sculpture.html

I'll keep everyone posted on the dog adoption adventure and here's to a happy ending!

Cheers!

Beautiful Pups.  The Boy looks like the typical mischievous yet 'beyond-the-Law'  Hüsky.  "yes i ate yer Passport;  you left it in that desk drawer for me. It was almost expired anyway."

You don't owe me a Beer Mr. AlanR.  I'm happy to try & help out,  knowing that you are trying to find the right Family for the Pups,  and just how much Fun they are.

I still think that the most likely approach is to contact Husky fiends such as the Musher  groups.  They've got a bunch already;  what's another pair?

The breed are very social together,  and make nice Packs.  As working Dogs,  they have evolved towards group skills.

Best of Luck with this adoption project.

yeah man, dont give up yet.   No one can say you arent working hard to honor her wishes. Poor doggies.

Bump for Alan R. {{{{ Zonahs helping Zonahs }}}} yeah!

FONDEST
BEST
WISHES

for a Happy, Healthy Husky adoption plan,  keeping the pair together.

That Northern breed are the Coolest,  most Fun Doggies ever.

They go anywhere,  and don't stink much.  Cleanest Dog I've ever had.  Super Clean and non - stinky.

I really hope they find a nice,  cushy Home.

What a Bonus that they get along w/ the Kittehs laugh

Ok. Friday may be the day.

A young, engaged couple from Pennsylvania (right over the Maryland line) is going to take both dogs!!!

I figure they have the energy, funds, and time to deal with them (they have no kids); they just closed on their first house (nice neighborhood and fenced yard); and they are cute and in love (the couple), so it will be a good home. I'm also thinking a couple adopting them is better than a single person, because they can provide twice the attention.

Keep your fingers and paws crossed.

Excellent news, Alan! Sounds like everyone will be happy, part of which will be that you know that the dogs have a good home. You've done right. heart

Great News !!

That is so ≈♦≈ Awesome; Huskies found a Loving Home together.

Congratulations for all of your hard work,  finding a suitable new  'Forever Home' smiley

Those Pups will be very happy there,  I'm sure.  The new relationship will also add tremendous benefits to the Vacuum bag industry.

They have to join Viva and post updates. Their masters too.

They are such cute dogs and my fingers are crossed so hard

they are gonna break

let's affirm this is their new home-

please let us know heart

Happy Ending!

The nice young couple from Pennsylvania took possession of the two dogs today. They were very excited (the dogs and the couple).

I made sure they got their walks and baths before the long ride home (the dogs not the couple).

(If you ever need a good kennel in MD/DC area for last minute, long-term boarding, this Shady Springs place was pretty nice)

Enjoy the weekend.

IMAG0688 (3)_0.jpg

Got a report on the other two pets - cats - I gave away to a relative: the older one is totally acclimated and sleeping on the owner's bed each night; the younger one WAS so mellow they initially renamed it "Snuggles" -- however within a few days it turned super-aggressive and started to terrorize the other cats in the household. I think it's getting too much catnip. Or resents being called "Snuggles."

This is so great! Nicely done, Alan.

So happy that it all worked out.  Good for you to maintain the Patience getting that pair in a nice home together.

You did the Right Thing,  and those Pups will have a Cushy Life wink

I'm sure that your Departed Sister approves of Huskies'  new luxurious Home.

This is the best news ever- for everyone!

Totally made my day

You did right by your family and those beautiful pets :)

much love heart

HUZZAH!!!!!

A happy ending!

Bravo.  heart

Good human. May you receive many biscuits.
