Madonna

Forums:

While I was not a huge fan of her when she first hit the scene, she has proven her talent to me ever since. One has to give props to any artist that keeps changing up their game over the course of 30 years plus.

Curious to see what songs Vivas might like. For me, I have always thought Like A Prayer a wonderfully written song. I am also fond of Beautiful Stranger.

Not a fan.  Like Warhol a person whose greatest talent was the ability to play the market.  And by doing so wasted a lot of their actual gift.

I had a SBD bootleg from a 1988 show and it was pretty rockin'.A few months ago I watched her concert on cable, and that woman still has the "it factor." I don't really know too many of her songs, but I'd love to see her live.

She has some talent but she doesn't do anything for me.

Can not give her any accolades.

#whosthatgirl

Gave me my fave movie line:

"Just take a valium like a normal person"

I respect her messages and longevity

Also: la isla Bonita (;

BK, no doubt!

I'm convinced prince is responsible for the majority of the 'like a prayer album'

I'm convinced prince is responsible for the majority of the 'like a prayer album'

That is an interesting comment. During the same time period, Prince was the master of mixing theology and sex, which are the primary themes of Like A Prayer. Prince was also writting a ton of songs under pseudonyms that he feed to a number of artists. Some of them were publicized, others were not. Even though the imagery in the Like A Prayer songs was from the female viewpoint, it was not unheard during that timeframe for Prince to write in a female voice, as well.

At very least, Prince influenced Madonna's writing and production on that album.

i like her 1st video. she was hot.

I thought that it was a known fact that Prince worked on that album?  Madonna's talent is playing 'Madonna' and staying relevant. She's always been smart enough to leave the music to more capable hands.

I like that her and Tupac dated.

She seems to have 133 songwriting credits:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Songs_written_by_Madonna_(entertainer)

So, you're still not sure on how that all works?

Hey Prince!  You're signed to the same company as Madonna. Can you play ball and write some songs for her?  Ummm, sure, we'll give you 500K for each one but we need to include her name. Plus publishing? You drive a hard bargain!

Well, now I know, don't I?

I'll tell you, there sure are some dumb mofos around here, like that BrianK guy, who doesn't know that Prince penned Madonna songs.

While there was some involvement from Prince on the Like A Prayer album (duet and minimal guitar work) there really isn't any proof that he wrote songs for the album. Lot's of rumors only. I agree it is possible that he did more than is common knowledge but to state as fact that he did more is going out on a limb.

Brian -- i agree.  And I thought that you were a Bobby guy?  You should at least know something about Madonna.

Tony -- there's no proof that Prince wrote for that album??

I only know that Bobby looked extra hot in the Madonna T with the Daisy Dukes.

From Wikipedia:

Recording artist Prince played the guitar on three songs from the album, "Like a Prayer", "Keep It Together", and "Act of Contrition", though he remained uncredited.[15] Prince and Madonna also worked together on the track "Love Song". The song was recorded at Prince's Studio on Paisley Park; "We were friends and talked about working together, so I went to Minneapolis to write some stuff with him, but the only thing I really dug was 'Love Song' [...] We ended up writing it long-distance, because I had to be in L.A. and he couldn't leave Minneapolis, and quite frankly I couldn't stand Minneapolis. When I went there, it was like 20 degrees below zero, and it was really desolate. I was miserable and I couldn't write or work under those circumstances", Madonna recalled.[7]

Its well known that Prince co-wrote "Love Song" on the "Like a Prayer Album" and Madonna has gone on the record talking about how they worked on that track long distance because it was too cold in Minneapolis for her to join Prince there for the recording of the tune in his studio.  Prince is also listed as a producer of the album and played guitar on three other tracks.

So admittedly he wrote "Love Song"?  I left the co part out for a reason.

Brian -- from what I remember you are not a musician?  Do you think that you could write a song that is good & accessible enough to played on the radio and sell millions of albums?

Dude, I couldn't even write a song that would be playable in my shower, and that even my dog would listen to!

Tony -- there's no proof that Prince wrote for that album??

I never said that he didn't write for that album. I was aware that he co-wrote Love Song and was listed as a producer. The guitar solo at the end of Like A Prayer is also the same as the guitar in Act of Contrition. Same tape, same notes, just added in. I was more trying to debunk the rumors that Prince wrote the lions share of the songs on that album. A lot of people believe he did. We may never know for sure.

I recall that she got her start as an adult film actress.  Never seen any of her movies,  but no doubt they are collectible.

My one live Madonna show was her brief set at Live Aid in JFK stadium.  Her band was playing along  and had a good groove going for a while and then, this screeching and yowling noise takes over.  I didn't stay for the entire set,  but went and got ice cream.

JFK was on its last legs even then;  the plumbing in all the toilets had gone without repair for a long time and the hallways were flooded with overflow.  I suppose that the city knew it was slated for the wrecking ball and did not waste any time with repairs.

The bigger question, to me, is, "what truly is Madonna's prowess as a songwriter?"

Is she as unable as Jonas makes her out to be? I'm 100% talking out my ass, but for some reason I think that she's fairly capable and creative, and his description would be more apt for Britney, who is pretty much an idiot.

College educated.

Mehdonna.

Pat Boone was once a big star, too.

And he also reinvented himselflaugh

i liked her in Visions of Johanna

Well, there are some legs to the urban legend about Madonna being in "adult films" early in her career:

Madonna has always been cool and will go down as a legend if she already isn't considered one. "Like a Prayer" is one of my favorite songs by her. I love the spirituality it contains and its overall positivity.

I'll admit it brightens my day a little bit when I hear 'open your heart to me' at a grocery store.

I like her a lot.

Weren't there some pet cougars in Who's That Girl?  What was the deal with that?

It's been long established that 'la isla bonita' is a good song.

i don't believe she had any part in writing that one but did have good enough taste to jump on it when other pop stars of the time had passed on it.

i don't believe she had any part in writing that one but did have good enough taste to jump on it when other pop stars of the time had passed on it.

Which brings up an important point. If she didn't write the song, is her talent as a singer/performer negated? I think most fans of music would say that Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and other singers were/are hugely talented. They didn't write songs.

Don't forget that king of hound dogs, elvis Presley

Would have been a good bang back in the 80's. Very good.

I'm a fan. First saw her back in 85' at Merriweather with the Beasties opening for her on the Like a Virgin Tour. I miss the black eye liner and lace gloves with no fingers, that were all the rage for the ladies!

Jellybean Benetiz is a genius.

sucks

I'll use this thread as an opportunity to also confess that every time I hear 'I'll remember' from that movie 'with honors' it makes me want to fumble my way through a Harvard law degree aided only by my dull, Brendan fraser type wits and unlikely homeless joe Pesci mentor to guide me.

I don't want to hijack this thread but my time is short and I must tell Furious Eugenius of the upcoming Steve Gunn dates.

her early pop/dance hits are fun.  Get into the Groove & Crazy For You are good examples.

Tony -- I agree, in the public eye stage presence eclipses writing talent 10 to 1. Tony Bennett was a gentleman that respected every band that he played with, Sinatra was a wanna be gangster little prick with a smooth voice.

I still have respect for Madonna. I was a teen in the 80's.  There was no hiding.

I naively feel compelled to stand up for song writers.

I'm crazy for u, liquid monkey.

And Thanks, ateix!

I was already aware of those and, as stated previously on other threads, plan on trying to catch the 7/30 show in San Diego after I perform a day show at Winston's with hit the wall in ocean beach, but thanks for looking out and giving me another opportunity to plug the show.

Feel free to bump that thread with this information as well.

any zoners want to meet up next Sunday at the space bar in San Diego after seeing me express myself at winstons, lemme know!

Trying to think of what thread that actually was, E. It's a little less intuitive to not have the threads archived after awhile, interestingly enough.

I feel like "The Chapel in San Francisco" would be an appropriate thread to bump with that info.

Expressions at Winstons and then Spacin' at Space Bar. Huh. Slay.

Thanks for asking, ateix!

the zma thread in question can b seen here:

http://www.vivalazone.org/other-stuff/zma-730-socal-hit-wall-reunion

not gonna play any Madonna but we do some pretty mean cold blood covers!

>>>expressions at winstons and then spacin' at the space bar. Huh. Slay.

that's the plan, u know how I do!

what Madonna said, really helped
She said, "Boy, you better learn to express yourself"

father John misty has co-written songs for lady gaga and Beyoncé.

just felt like sharing that

>> father John misty has co-written songs for lady gaga and Beyoncé.

Yes, but is he any good at writing...

Seriously?

I'll admit it brightens my day a little bit when I hear 'open your heart to me' at a grocery store.

As if we needed confirmation that E is an evolved male who breaks the archetypical mold for a bass player. I'm betting he makes the women swoon when he cries. :-)

I've grown mehhh pretty lukewarm on the guy. Still like that 'Hollywood Boulevard Cemetary' one but I haven't kept up with Honeybear or anything. Idk.

Haven't done a check-in on Fleet Foxes, either, though. I know theyre a good band, I guess I've shifted away a little.

Honey bear was kinda meh, but 'pure comedy' is still probably my favorite new album of the year I've heard so far.

still haven't been really able to get into fleet foxes but I haven't tried very hard.

Hung Up is good shit. Love me some Madge.

I saw her once a very long time ago. I was 14 and my super cool uncle took me to the show. Never a big fan but I have always respected her talent and in those days she was quite an eye full.

What I remember most about the show was the Beastie Boys opened. Fight For Your Right To PARTY.. It seems like a lifetime ago now. I was just getting started on my musical journeys.. WALSTIB wink

The Louis Black Band?

Is it foolish of me to not really have any interest in the second men?

i love the missing men!

I love how this turned into a Watt thread. Just saw Mike a few weeks ago here in Dallas

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, it hasn't officially been hijacked into a full on watt thread just yet.

so here's the full performance of the last time I saw the missing men:
