I do encourage my children to learn. I want them to be competitive in the future job market. It's very likely that Spanish will become the unofficial language of the United States in the coming decades. I don't find this to be a disappointment or a reason for panic. I'm actually looking forward to it. My kids can assimilate into this young country just like my great grandparents did.
Studied Spanish from grade 6-12, learned all the grammar, subjunctive clauses, past tense etc.
Forgot most of it after a few years, but when I brewed in Kansas, I got to practice conversational again as all the kitchen staff were Mexican and did not speak much English. So now I'm maybe a 5th-grade level speaker. I did spend five weeks in Mexico some years back and was able to function, and even translate for the Canadians.
Got hired on at a native plant nursery in OR by virtue of being a good-enough speaker. THe boss was saying that the Mexican staff did not quite understand the details of tasks which he wanted them to do, so could I please explain to them clearly in Spanish.
Turned out that they just liked doing stuff their way, and were not planning on listening to me as I did not sign the checks. But I had a lot of fun practicing Spanish and making up Mexican songs like what I heard all day on the radio.
