Highland Park Independence Day Massacre

Forums:

Little pink houses for you and me.

I don't know a soul who's not been battered
I don't have a friend who feels at ease
I don't know a dream that's not been shattered
Or driven to its knees

Everything is broken.

On the stairs, I smoke a cigarette alone
The Mexican kids are shooting fireworks below
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July
Hey, baby, it's the Fourth of July

Whatever happened, I apologize
So dry your tears, and baby, walk outside
It's the Fourth of July

Monday, bloody Monday.

>>>>Prior to this incident, Chicago police said at least 54 people had been shot over July 4 weekend with at least seven deaths in the city, per WLS-TV.

Sounds like your average weekend in Chi-raq.

Yeah, but Highland Park is an affluent community on the North Shore, and this was a sniper on a rooftop with a rifle.

Shooter unloaded a 30 round mag, reloaded and fired another 30 in about 10 seconds. Just horrible.

The parade had too many doors.

Sounds like they have a person of interest.

Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said at a news conference that the police are looking for Robert E. Crimo III, 22, in connection with the shooting. He is believed to be driving a 2010 silver Honda Fit with Illinois license plates, Covelli said, and is “from the area” and goes by the name “Bobby.”

Dude's lo-fi rap videos appear to be popular.

This one hit home for me since grew up in Highland Park.

I hear you, Face. I lived in Winnetka for a while.

Robert E. Crimo III, a person of interest in a mass shooting at a parade that left six dead and sent more than two dozen people to hospitals, has been taken into custody near Lake Forest, Illinois, authorities said during a brief news conference Monday night.

Authorities said Crimo was spotted by a North Chicago officer who attempted a traffic stop. Crimo led officers on a brief chase before being stopped. He was taken into custody without incident and will be transferred to the police department in Highland Park, where the deadly shooting occurred earlier Monday.

Crimo has not been named as a suspect. When asked, authorities said he remains a "person of interest" while they investigate and positively connect him to the scene.

I'm so sick of this. I lived for years in nearby Evanston and have many friends in Highland Park. When and where will it happen again? Such is life in America.

Incidents like these make me believe that our right to "peacefully assemble" are under attack.  Lawmakers need to consider this when constructing firearm legislation.

I'm in favor of a ban on assault weapons.

but Highland Park already has an assault weapons ban

...and this shooting was conducted with a rifle, as mike said earlier

BTW; here's justice thomas and scalia's 2015 dissent (go figure) specifically on the highland park ban: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/15pdf/15-133_7l48.pdf

regarding the nomenclature; the justices apparently prefer the term "modern sporting rifles" to "assault rifles".

So, how long until they drag out the tired old but mental health excuse?

$2000. deposit per bullet casings should help curb the weak minded / heavily armed all while leaving the 2nd amendment intact.

Chris Rock proposed raising the cost of a bullet to $5k years ago.

The ban needs to be nationwide to be meaningful, otherwise, people will go wherever there aren't restrictions to get them.

I'm no gun expert, but it seems any weapon capable of firing 70 rounds in a couple of minutes would qualify as an assault weapon.

>>I'm no gun expert, but it seems any weapon capable of firing 70 rounds in a couple of minutes would qualify as an assault weapon.<<

this actually speaks more to the technical ability of the shooter than the mechanical capacity of the gun.

even with ten round clips and a WWII bolt action rifle, a good shooter, unopposed, can easily fire at that rate.

That's one round every two seconds, not accounting for aim, which this guy obviously didn't yet have a grasp of.

The patchwork of state laws we currently have is a huge part of the problem. Comprehensive federal legislation is needed, but with the current composition of the US Supreme Court, whose recent activity is heavily in favor of States' rights, it's unlikely we would see it stand up to legal challenges if such a law was passed (which itself is unlikely).

Problem with pursuing a ban on "assault rifles" is that there is no accepted definition of the term and usually turns on cosmetic features that have little to do with the function of the firearm.  For example, I have a Ruger "ranch rifle" that looks nothing like an AR-15 and probably wouldn't be considered an "assault rifle' despite the fact it fires the exact same round at exactly the same rate and can take large capacity magazine.

Proponents of new gun safety regulations would be better served focusing on large capacity magazines (for both rifles and pistols) rather than attempting to ban certain types of rifles based on arbitrary and largely cosmetic features, like pistol grips.

Thought I read 2 30 round mags in 10 seconds?

Something effective for the short term to curb mass shootings may simply be to ban all gun and ammo sales to white males ages 18 to 80, starting immediately.

you all live in fuked up country happy independece day

Well, yeah. But we're the greatest fucked up country on Earth.

I hear you, Face. I lived in Winnetka for a while<<<

Close enough for sure!  It's very surreal beyond the tragedy of it all.
