We've had The Greatest Generation, The Baby Boomers, Gen-X, The Millennials (aka Gen-Y), and now Gen-Z, or as I have started calling them, The Soft Generation, or Gen-tle.
The generation that dutifully wears their COVID masks even when mask mandates have ended.
That excessively and reflexively responds "thank you soooo much" for the littlest thing.
I now hear this insidious contrivance dozens of times a day after first noticing people (mostly of college age) saying it last autumn. I asked a friend in Missoula if he's hearing it there yet. He said no (Missoula's always been a little behind on cultural trends), but noted that when we were kids, you usually heard TYSM (Thank You So Much) being used sarcastically, not embued with the doe-eyed faux-sincerity the youngsters are using it with today.
I was born in the first month of Gen-X, and it seems to me that both the Boomers and Gen-Xers modus operandi was to subvert authority by flipping a finger to polite society and convention. Now the tables have been turned, and the late-adolescents are figuratively killing us with kindness. It's no surprise that after years of mostly piling up and being infrequent sellers, Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra LPs are selling like hotcakes. These were The Greatest Generation's latchkeys, and were by and large rejected by the Boomers and Xers, who wanted something edgier and not so old-fashioned.
Now don't get me wrong, hearing "thank you so much" is acceptable (personally, I prefer thanks a lot, or even the more multi-cultural mucho gracias or merci beaucoup, hell, originality goes a long way) when said in sincerity when someone has really done you something extraordinary. I just don't want to hear it as some automated, phoned-in response to the slightest interpersonal interaction.
But this is how the Soft Generation, Gen-tysm, Gen-tle is performing the age-old dance of hankling the old folks, with their contrived sincerity, fondness for crooners, and parroted social behavior, just like cute little lambs being led to the slaughter. Next time some one says thank you so much, just give them the old Philzone salute and tell them to go fuck themselves or thank you soooo much for not saying thank you so much.
Now get the hell off my lawn!

Of course it does. It benefits me and other vulnerable people from what the mask wearer may have picked up, and it benefits them because they get a small percentage of protection from the rest of us. Maybe what you meant was don't breathe on my lawn!

I didn't make myself clear in my original post. I meant to say; does it have any negative effect on anyone besides the mask wearer? If I see someone wearing a mask, it has no negative effect on me in any manner. Because of that, I really have no basis to complain about them nor do I feel anyone else does either.

I was hanging wih a good friend a few nights ago. He's 67 (I'm 58, so that would make us both "baby boomers"). He complained that the younger generation was rude, lacked manners and etiquette. I told him about the guy on the internet complaining that young people are too polite.
Silly, of course, to draw such conclusions either way about large groups of people. Because some people are rude, and some are polite, to various degrees, across whatever subset of humanity one wants to cherry pick.
So, go fuck yourself!
or in more polite terms... It is cordially requested that you sexually gratify yourself.
Either way, being told to fuck myself doesn't seem like much of an insult, unless it was a direct rejection from someone I specifically asked to fuck me. In that case, "go fuck yourself" is a good insult. "Would you like to fuck me?" "No, go fuck yourself", ouch!
In all other cases, it seems more like a benign suggestion. "Go fuck yourself" "OK, no problem, but can I wait until I get home first?"
