I mostly agree but the run I did in 88 from SPAC/Roch/Mainex2 was some of the greatest fun and music combined I ever had... looking back it was kinda like the last hurrah before the stadium years really took over completely
I saw well over 100 shows between 87 and 89. For energy, 87 took it. For musicianship, I'd give it to 89. Like Fish, though, I think I had the most fun in 88.
Some 88 standouts are the last night of Hampton, 2nd night if Hartford, last night of Irvine, a couple of the Alpines, Rochester and both Oxford, Maine shows. If I remember, I think that the Philly fall run was generally better than MSG. Oxford was the best of the year, at least to my ears.
Only saw 4 in 88 - NW and 2 of pre-NYE. Nothing wrong with them that I can put my finger on, but I remember them being a bit flat, esp. compared to the previous year. The RDs seemed to be out of synch perhaps?
Oh I forgot. I did see the Friday Spectrum show before MSG. That's when the Mayor let everyone sleep in the adjoining parks in Philly which was an epic move by him. Never to happen again I think??
Not good years for the Pacific NW... we got spoiled with the Hult Center years in the early 80's, and the epic great western tour in 83, but late 80's were either Autzen Stadium or Tacoma Dome for NW shows, not my fave venues, but that was pretty much it after the early 80s
I'll be the voice of decent here, and say meh to all three years.
It's mostly a matter of perspective & timing I suppose, and I did have fun at GD shows those years, but the band had changed a lot in the ten years I'd been into them at that point, and in my personal opinion not for the better.
For me '88 is an up & down year, there were many shows that had no song in the "ballad" slot, like Wharf & Peter. Some had Goin' Down the Rd. Saw over 25 shows, some were my favorites of the late 80's like 3/27, 3/30, 7/2, & 9/3.

12 of 80 shows. There were rumors Garcia had some painkillers from oral surgery in '88 that caused a slip in his sobriety. Thank U Setlists.net

Big fun with Little feat in the Pine Tree State that weekend. And a classic, tremendous traffic jam.

The 1989 font should be much larger. It's one of their best, particularly from June forward.
The rigidness of '88 is tough to decipher. Garcia played in a less plasma-like fashion and band followed suit. Odd.
