RIP RBG

Forums:

Dammit! thanks for holding on this long, Justice Ginsberg.

may you rest in power.

frightened to think how fast R's will move on this...

Oh fuck

The saliva is already flowing...

This sucks.  RIP.

You know that asshole Mitch McConnell will try to push through a nominee between now and January.

She held on for a long time. Rest in peace, Justice Ginsberg.

Oh this is really sad news. If nothing else she did a brilliant job of holding space for progressives of the future. Goddamnit.

Kiss the country as you knew it  goodbye.....

We already have, this is just another nail in the coffin

They held up on Obama for a year, no?

A friend sent me this:
Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: "My most fervent wish is that i I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."

it's all over now baby blue

Rudy Giuliani, Supreme Court Justice

Oh, Canada... has a nice ring to it...

"Nothing will fundamentally change"

During the local 5 o'clock news they cut out to the national feed of the report her passing for 3 seconds, then went to commercial for the local congressional republican. The national feed cut in during the commercial a few times then returned to the normal local news cast. Other channels are full rbg.

I'm imagining the station manager yelling at the subordinate! Quick PUSH THE BUTTON !!!

Then the button getting unpushed,,,,,,,,

then pushed again

funny shit

So are you fucking kidding me? On top of everything else going on between now and the election, we are also going to be in a crazy fight for a pivotal  supreme court seat....Its just too fucking much.

Russian troll farms are already pivoting and  frothing at the mouth over the news.

>Oh, Canada... has a nice ring to it.

I doubt Mexico or Canada will be accepting American refugees.

Find out and split asap.

Margaret Atwood predicted all of this and how it ends up.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski says she is NOT going to support a new nominee before the election.   I assume Romney will not participate in such a stunt either.  How many more Republican Senators do we need to block a nomination?

TOP RBG, time to hit the streets and protest. Mitch blocked Obama's SC pick by the Biden rule, if they think this kosher it's not.

^^2 more

>Find out and split asap.

You should take  your own advice, Slacker.

I was born here, Karen. I'll never have a reason to leave.

> How many more Republican Senators do we need to block a nomination?

The GOP holds 53 seats in the Senate, and needs a simple majority to confirm, so we'd need 4 GOP defections and every Senate Democrat would need to vote against a nomination to block it; if it's a tie, Pence gets a vote, and you know how that's going to go. Anyone heard anything from Susan Collins yet? She's not doing too well fighting for her seat in Maine, I've heard.

I'm hoping Ginsburg's passing has the effect of getting folks to redouble their efforts to unseat Trump and his downballot cronies.

Before the final vote there will be a hearing and vote in the judiciary committee in the Senate that Lindsey Graham chairs and Kamala Harris is on. Shit show doesn't begin to explain what the next 47 days are going to be like.

It's over.

McConnell already said he will ram it through, Republicans will cheer,

Democrats will whimper a tiny bit about "fairness," then it will be a done deal.

They will definitely get a new Judge in there.

No doubt about it.

What a fucking farce this country has become.

Just heard Mitch McConnell is saying there will be a confirmation vote on the Trump nominee.  Fuck, fuck, fuck.  Just need a couple more GOP senators to do the right thing, but after the impeachment fiasco and the railroading of the last unfit nominee, don't have much confidence in that happening.

It really isn't over there is nothing in the constitution that says they can't expand the court to 11 next year. The Democrats need to make clear that is what they will do if they ram this through.

FDR tried adding seats to the Supreme Court and it didn't go well for him.

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/when-franklin-roosevelt-clashed-w...

The American experiment is over. Nice try, folks. We had a pretty good run.

Mitch does this and he will ensure his own walking papers from the voters.

Dems can win the presidency and judiciary and pack the court with zero fucks to give citing McConnells hypocrisy.

It would be poetic symmetry to have Mitch's shameless pursuit of power unseat him and flip the court decidely in favor of the dems

>Breaking News: Senator Mitch McConnell said he would move forward quickly with President Trump’s nominee to replace Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on the Supreme Court.

^As noted above.

A lot of meltdowns in this thread.

Should be some interesting bumper stickers coming out of this when they start dismantling Roe vs. Wade:

U.S. Out Of Our Uteruses

If Kelly beats McSally in Az, since she was appointed,  He becomes senator before Jan.  Assuming Collins, Murkowski, and Grassley stick to their words, the Rs wont have the votes.

Stick to their words? They're already backpedaling

so if trump replaces rbg and the nom goes thru does that mean the court is already stacked and i dont have to vote for joe biden anymore

Nationwide strike, Mitch McConnell can now be allowed to get away with this shit

>  Assuming Collins, Murkowski, and Grassley stick to their words, the Rs wont have the votes.

Grassley said he would not recommend holding a hearing; that's not the same as not casting a vote to confirm. He was also instrumental in blocking confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland.

If Republican President Donald Trump nominates a replacement, U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley said in a call with Iowa reporters in July that he would not recommend holding a hearing on that candidate...Grassley, a Republican, drew Democrats' condemnation in 2016 when, as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, he blocked confirmation hearings for President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee, Merrick Garland.

"GOP Senators Susan Collins, Chuck Grassley and Lisa Murkowski have now pledged that they will not consider a Supreme Court appointment until after the next inauguration.

If Mitt Romney joins them and every Democratic Senator stands united, @realDonaldTrump
will get nothing."

Wont even need the Kelly scenario in this case.

wild that we have to rely on a religious extremist nutjob like romney to hold the line...sad times

Hope its true, but afraid things are going to get nasty.

Your stuff is fresher than mine, 73. Thanks.

Romney is a tool, he'll confirm whoever Vladimir wants.

I prayed for her soul and for her family.

It seems as if the question unspoken is whether abortion remains legal, I completely get the arguments one way and the other so          please spare me the justification...for a while I worked harder than anyone has or anyone posting on this message board will ever to elect a democrat president because at the time it was the most direct act I could engage in to stop the war, alas...that didn't work, but I always [albeit in a flawed justification] rationalized my instinctive misgivings and core rejection of the concept of abortion with the fact that I was doing everything I could to end war,,,it was an odd and flawed quid pro quo.

In my quest for a noninterventionist foreign policy I became fervently enamored with the liberty movement of Ron Paul, it was then that I first heard his discussion points in regards to abortion and it initiated or somehow triggered a remembrance of how I have always   thought about abortion, that I'm against it.

I realize that's unacceptable to some, and that's ok...I'm against abortion.

That's ok as long as you like Jimi Hendrix.

I do like Jimi a lot

I also think Ruth had many admirable qualities, it just seemed as if she allowed the elephant in the room to define her, although she certainly played a key role in many positive rulings from the bench...I would argue her identity as a justice was unprecedentedly destructive in nature, an identity she increasingly seemed to embrace and celebrate in the Oprahfication of the new normal.

we were lucky to have a person of so much moral fortitude, and commitment and strength help our country for so long

rip rbg.

dems should expand the courts. put 11 on the bench. ram through progressives.

kind of a strange democracy when it comes down to depend on one or two people lol.

question is, how many dems senators will vote for the trump nominee.

interesting times.

btw -- the republicans would never pray that the dems would help them out the way liberals are praying the gop saves them.

gonna be another hard lesson for the dems -- unless this is what they wanted. hard to tell anymore.

>dems should expand the courts. put 11 on the bench<

If Trump gets to replace RBG, the conservatives would still hold a 6-5 majority.

Hard lessons for the Democrats?

No, hard lessons for ideologues, and the rest of the country.

Stay pure, never compromise

>>>>>gonna be another hard lesson for the dems

What's the lesson?

They need to win more elections?

that's not true at all -- the dems just can't play the game ruthless like their opponent.

there's really no arguing that.

and if voting corporate dem my entire life isn't compromising, i don't know what it.

again, the dnc won't even let us have m4a.

they done fucked up.

>>>>>btw -- the republicans would never pray that the dems would help them out the way liberals are praying the gop saves them.

No, they just cheat any way they can.

^yeah well maybe the dems should take a play from the gop playbook.

<<<>>>If Trump gets to replace RBG, the conservatives would still hold a 6-5 majority.

then make it 13.

>>>>>dems should expand the courts. put 11 on the bench. ram through progressives.

They need the Senate and the WH if they're going to try to do that.

> if voting corporate dem my entire life isn't compromising, i don't know what it.<

The Supreme Court was on the ballot in 2016 and you wrote in Sanders in Pennsylvania. It's irrelevant now, when Trump replaces RBG, the conservatives will hold a 6-3 majority for the next 20 years

Rest in power RBG

The fight will continue

Imagine

Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people living for today

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace, you

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people sharing all the world, you

You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope some day you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Pennsylvania sounds like a shit hole.

pennsylvania is a shithole.

^It's a mixed bag, Slack. Philly was a great place to live. There are some beautiful areas across the state. But as James Carville said, “Pennsylvania is Philadelphia and Pittsburgh at the ends, Alabama in between”

yeah biden better start courting the left, he hasnt so far.

good thing? i would do it again, lumber. again, the dems completely fucking up is their fault. choosing to represent corporations over people was their decision.

Ruth's impact will be felt forever.

I saw her face in all the young female lawyers holding up the ' Free Law Services'  signs in our airports after king donald's Muslim travel ban.

Great Lady - Much Thanks +  RIP Ruth

You guys are upsetting Disco Stu.

<good thing>

I edited that for I believe it would be misunderstood...

Yes, I wrote that for the benefit of the ideologues who refuse to compromise.  At least this go round y'all won't get the blame for the next 20 years of conservative jurisprudence... That blame rests with those who wouldn't compromise in 2016.

^thats funny.

i blame the democrats for abandoning their base 60 years ago, catering to the largest corporations for decades.

but you blame 2016.

seems fucking stupid and very shortsighted.

Blaming helps. Grow that tent and don't let the working class in.

>> it was then that I first heard his discussion points in regards to abortion and it initiated or somehow triggered a remembrance of how I have always   thought about abortion, that I'm against it.<<

Well, don't have one, Byren. I thought goo-gobbling GOPers loved freedom and choice. derp

>seems fucking stupid and very shortsighted<

^I can't control who runs, but it's very easy to see which candidate would be better for the country.

  Short sighted?

No, sir, it is you who are myopic. The Supreme Court is the long game, and you just don't seem to get it

If Clinton had won in 2016, the liberals would currently hold a 6-3 majority, and we'd be arguing over Clinton appointing RBG's replacement

i do get it.

the GOP def gets it.

the greedy dems don't get it.

>>> ....how I have always   thought about abortion, that I'm against it >>>

bryen, don't have an abortion then

^^^lol.

and if we had bernie rn we'd be talking about banning fracking and a green new deal, while the entire west coast is on fire.

instead we have biden, talking about how he's not banning fracking.

but we have none of that.

In all honesty, ogkb, when was the last time you actually listened to Biden for more than 12 seconds?

>if we had bernie rn we'd be talking about banning fracking and a green new deal<

But we don't, and he wasn't on the ballot in 2016. It's either Trump or the Democrat.  People who understand the importance  of the Supreme Court would vote for the candidate who would nominate more favorable  justices.

6-3 liberal majority vs 6-3 conservative majority... Understand?

it seems to be all or nothing with you

stay pure.

>>>>>People who understand the importance  of the Supreme Court would vote for the candidate who would nominate more favorable  justices.

Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania got who they wanted.

California did what you wanted them to do but you still lost.

p-nutz

why shit all over a RIP thread?

because that's what you're doing.

must be that philly grit

smh

<Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania got who they wanted<

Margin of victory very slim, and folks like pyramid writing in Sanders, in a swing state, may have made a difference.

And we've been over the swing state vs blue state argument ad nauseum.

more favorable? garland didn't even have a position on abortion. that's more favorable. i don't think so.

thod, calm down.

bk, i watched a few minutes of his PA townhall the other day.

rough stuff for the old man.

biden really should endorse M4A.

Yes, pyramid, more favorable.

Garland better than Gorsuch, IMO.

A Clinton nominee better than Kavanagh,  IMO.

Clinton, or Biden nominee better than a Trump nominee,  IMO...

Better than = more favorable

Apparently you disagree.

disagree about what?

>California did what you wanted them to do but you still lost.

Wouldn't that be 'we' lost? Or does Slacker not vote?

also doesn't make sense that he suggests others move out of the US if they're not happy when all he does is complain about the state of affairs here. Not that it matters, because  Mexico and Canada aren't welcoming any Americans, whether they were born here or not. Actually,  very few countries are welcoming Americans at the moment.

Pheat, you seem to be hung up on M4A. It's not the be-all and end all. I get Medicare benefits, and there are some serious deficiencies there. Off the top of my head - lack of dental benefits, no drug coverage w/o additional expense, and the patient is responsible for 20% of the cost of most procedures. Yes, it's better than nothing, and better than some private ins., but it could be a lot better.

Likewise, there could be other paths forward that are not as good as Medicare but still better than current alternatives. Most Europeans like their insurance systems, but none are identical to M4A.

>disagree about what<

Garland better than Gorsuch, IMO.

A Clinton nominee better than Kavanagh,  IMO.

Clinton, or Biden nominee better than a Trump nominee,  IMO...

Better than = more favorable

Otherwise you wouldn't have written in Sanders, in a swing state, IMO

Unless you disagree on the importance of the Supreme Court?

that's what i thought. you're a bit ridiculous man.

of course i think biden is a better human than trump, but as i've already stated, the bar doesn't get any lower. horrible argument on your part.

you think voting for the lesser evil works, i don't (used to).

there's really nothing else to say, is there?

i mean, you blame 2016 -- that's just wrong -- and it shows you either don't understand (not what i think about you) or you're choosing to ignore the root of the issue b/c you actually think the status quo of corporate rule is fine, accepting dem corporate rule as "as good as it gets", and that it is acceptable.

don't you think it's sad that we're picking apart levels of evil here?

2016... if Clinton had won there would currently be a 6-3 liberal majority on the Court. You can't change the past, but it was obvious what was at stake in 2016, Mitch McConnell told everyone what it was about. It's not hyperbole,  and it's not ridiculous. It's a 20 year 6-3 conservative majority on the Supreme Court.

I'll phrase it another way... if lesser of two evils won in 2016, there would be a 6-3 liberal majority on the Supreme Court, instead we will now have a 6-3, ( possibly 5-4 if Thomas replaced by a liberal) conservative majority for at least the next 20 years

> don't you think it's sad that we're picking apart levels of evil here<

Yes. Life is short, and it's  often cruel and unfair.

That's the bitter truth.

will not admit that the Supreme Court is of supreme importance (not compared to your monorail monotheistic me-ism)

Have to say, as someone who urged Bernie supporters on the old Zone to vote Hillary in 2016 exclusively because of the Supreme Court, and got roundly chewed out for it, the fact that so many folks' eyes are now open about the real stakes of a presidential election warms my heart a little.

turts, totally true  ( 2 senators per state - not sure of the equity, but wtf - the  electoral collage is an interesting balance too - intended to equalize, but out of whack perhaps......)

but the court can last for  6 terms - 24 year    so the impact can be huge

Losing RBG sucks.

It isn't just abortion...that's a small factor, really.

It's a possible vote on environmental changes....it's about the future of the planet, as well as human equality.

then all dem senators publicly endorse expanding the courts -- including those running to take gop senator seats.

biden has to endorse this idea all before the election -- then pack that shit so there is no "swing" vote. its just a liberal majority, no questions asked. no grey area justice. fuck it.

that's how the gop would fuck the dems. we've seen it, are living it.

>> maybe they should just shutdown the senate since trump is def going to get his nomination.....?

Not much they can do except boycott the hearings and the votes, but that wouldn't really have much effect. The rest of the post is on point though. No reason to honor any norms anymore, except that the media scold Democrats for doing things that they're silent on when Republicans do them, and bad press clips make a lot of D elected officials nervous, because they're weak.

>all dem senators publicly endorse expanding the courts -- including those running to take gop senator seats.

biden has to endorse this idea all before the election <

Unfortunately, the issue of the Supreme Court tends to motivate Republicans voters more so than Democratic voters

more reason why biden should come out and support m4a.

The ACA, for all its faults, was Biden's baby. He'll never scrap it for M4A.

At this point, it's probably better to make suggestions on how to make ACA better. For instance, there's a clause that says that if an employer offers health insurance to the primary insured at less than 9% of gross income, and the employer also offers the insurance to family, even if unsubsidized, the family members aren't eligible for the exchange.

To put this in real life terms, my employer pays for 100% of my health, and offers it to my family at an unsubsidized rate. The cost to me, for my 3 kids, would have been $36,000 a year. There was no help. Luckily, I could get it through their colleges for much, much less. Otherwise, I would have been working full-time and living in a box, so my kids could be insured.

For the time being, the best we can do is to fix the ACA and use it as a pathway to M4A.

>>>>wish the maggots to eat at his dead brain

Collins, Murkowski, and Kelly over McSally in the run-off for MCCain's seat, gives the Dems three of the four votes they'll need to stop the confirmation.  Romney is the obvious candidate to be the 4th vote.  He has been open in his opposition to Trump's platform.  What's to stop him now?

How many times do we need to watch this head fake movie with Murkowski and Collins? They will vote to confirm.

This country is headed towards Handmaid's Tale country with Amy Coney Barrett being nominated. The only question is how long it will take....

>> Romney is the obvious candidate to be the 4th vote.  He has been open in his opposition to Trump's platform.  What's to stop him now?

The fact that he loves conservative judges. If he were elected in 2012 or ran in 2016 and won he'd have nominated the same kinds of people as Trump. So seems very unlikely he'll buck Trump on the thing they maybe agree most on. But I'd be happy to be wrong.
