The Only Stream That Matters (A Song For Joe Strummer)

Forums:

The past few years, Jesse Malin has been putting together an bi-coastal, international event called Gates of The Wast to celebrate Joe Strummer's birthday and raise some funds for  various charities. With live events on hold due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this year the celebration will be in the form of a live stream this Friday at 3pm EDT/Noon PDT on  https://www.joestrummer.com/ and the Joe Strummer YouTube channel. The lineup is still being finalized and added to, but as of now Bob Weir, Bruce Springsteen, The Hold Steady, Jesse Malin, Lucinca Williams, Dhani Harrison, Eugene Hutz of Gogol Bordello, Joe Ely, Tom Morello, The Dropkick Murphys and many more will be performing their favorite Joe Strummer songs. The charity being supported this year is NIVA the National Independent Venue Association to help the places that most artists got their start performing, small independent venues. I am glad so many artists in so many streams are supporting the #SaveOurStages movement because if these venues all close (at least 90% of them are hanging on by the slimmest threads right not) the live music scene will take a very long time to recover, if ever.

If you are a fan of live music, Joe Strummer, The Clash, The Mescaleros or any of the artists that will be performing, sit down, crank up the computer or smart TV, turn it up loud and dig into your pockets if possible. These venues and their employees need our help to survive. If they don't, none of us will be seeing many live acts in the future.

Saw the US Fest show. Mick Jones last show with the Clash. Very powerful watching back.

I was lucky enough to see quite a few Clash shows and each one, even the sloppy ones, were fire. So much passion flowing off the stage.

Awesome. Thanks for the heads up. Seems like a quality operation, great content and a worthy cause.

Anybody have a guess on what songs various performers might do?

Bob Weir?

Weir has sung Train In Vain live a few times.

Bob also recorded this duet of "Death And Glory" with Jesse Malin at TRI Studios in 2015:

Didn't know about Weir performing Train In Vain and had forgotten about that duet with Jesse on Death or Glory. which is bad on me because I know I posted it on whatever Zone was around about 10 seconds after it was released.

Both solid choices.

Needless to say, I am wondering hard what song Springsteen might play. He has done a cover of London's Calling before. My wild card pick is based on another cover Springsteen did in Australia a few years ago. He did a cover of the Bee Gees song Stayin' Alive that started out with just him doing an acoustic riffy bit that stylistically could lend itself to Magnificent Seven. What I hear in my mind, with Bruce's voice, would be awfully powerful.

I heard Ratdog(or maybe it was Furthur) do Train in Vain, at the Cap a few years ago.. it was no bueno.

Some versions of Train In Vain with Furthur:

Looks like Bob was struggling with remembering the lyrics, and the tempo had slowed considerably by 2013.  Must have been close to when the Further train crashed.

Looks like a pair of anarchists having a good time.

A pity that Bobby never tried to emulate Joe's coiffure.

Letting everyone know that there will be a special t-shirt with the Joe Strummer mural posted above for this event on Friday.

Starting in a little bit more than 3 hours.

Live Mescoleros video ~ Police On My Back

The Interrupters ~ Get Down Moses

Jeff Tweedy ~ Death Or Glory

Tom Morello ~ Bankrobber

Jesse Malin ~ Johnny Appleseed

Hinds ~ Spanish Bombs

Craig Finn & Tad Kubler (The Hold Steady) ~ Washngton Bullets

Jesse Malin reminds me of a Welcome Back Kotter character that didnt make the cut or a lesser gang leader from The Warriors.

Jesse Dayton ~  ?

Joe Ely ~ I Fought The Law

Brian Fallon ~ Long Shadow

Cherry Glazerr ~ Charlie Don't Surf

Dropkick Murphys ~ Tommy Gun

Nikolai Fraiture (The Strokes) ~ Police & Thieves

Butch Walker ~ London Calling

Josh Homme & Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens of the Stone Age) Train In Vain (Stand By Me)

Really enjoying this.

Frank Turner ~ (White Man) in Hammersmith Palais

Hind playing with a missing guitar string was pretty punk.

Apologizing for it was not.  :-)

Really enjoying this.

I am as well. Joe wrote so many great songs that many of them get lost in the shuffle. Glad to see some not as well known songs making appearences. That version of Spanish Bombs by Hind was so damn cute. Never thought of that song as cute.

Josh Klinghoffer ~ Rudy Don't Fail.

Lyza Jayne & C.C. Adcock ~ Silver & Gold

Lucinda Williams ~ Straight To Hell

Dave Hause ~ Coma Girl

Eugene Hutz (Gogol Bordello) ~ Raw Grace In Your Face (Everything Joe Said)

New original song written about meeting Joe Strummer

Jesse Malin & Bob Weir  ~ Death Or Glory

And it's a wrap.

If anyone wants to watch this, for the first time or to watch again, a replay video is up on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=522hHPWLoxA

Thanks, Ski. I'm enjoying this immensely!

So many gems in that broadcast. Another one I really liked was the version of Get Down Moses done by The Interrupters.

I liked Josh Homme on Train in Vain and

Lucinda Williams doing Straight to Hell. That one was particularly well produced.

Link to Joe's last ever US show.
