Chief Justice Roberts Grows A Spine

Yep.  Roberts is shaping up to be the new justice Kennedy style swing vote on the bench. Don't always agree with him but good to see him be able to put reasoned jurisprudence over partisan loyalty.

Roberts will more often sde with the conservative majority.

This is why electing Biden is so very important. The next President, Biden or another Trump term, will get one or two Supreme Court appointments. A second Trump term will mean a 6-3/7-2 conservative majority for a generation. 

This is why choosing the lesser evil is important.

The thing about Roberts is that on occasion he gets that this is "his" court and he gets that history will note that - so sometimes he HAS to do the right thing. At least he gets that.

If people really want to get rid of the Electoral College, the big push will have to be based on data. If people, en masse, vote for the least shitty candidate, there's better data to support a Constitutional amendment.

It's one thing to win the popular vote by 3 million and lose in the EC. It's another thing to lose the popular by over 10 million and lose.

Although I sometimes wonder if you even care about an answer - the answer is yes and no. It's not that your vote does not matter - it just does not matter much in the general scheme of the election. Your vote should at least have meaning for you anyway - and the office of President is the perhaps the only one where your vote is like this. Every other election on your ballot (for state level offcies) should hold importance.

I don't see it going anywhere either, Lumber. In fact, if it had done its job in 2016 we wouldn't have Trump.The EC was put in place as a safeguard against a populist like him.

Not sure that's true, Pheater, that people think he's the "only" problem. Over the last few years I've seen most in this thread outline other problems, as they see them. Most agree that the 2 party system is a problem, and that the Electoral College also is.

WASHINGTON — Lindsey Graham, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, is publicly urging federal judges in their mid-60s or older to step aside so President Donald Trump and Senate Republicans can fill the vacancies with conservative jurists.

This is an historic opportunity,” Graham said. “We’ve put (nearly) 200 federal judges on the bench. ... If you can get four more years, I mean, it would change the judiciary for several generations. So if you’re a circuit judge in your mid-60s, late 60s, you can take senior status. Now would be a good time to do that, if you want to make sure the judiciary is right of center.”

Graham’s committee is set to vote next week on Judge Justin Walker, a 37-year-old protege of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell who has been nominated to the nation’s second-most powerful court. If confirmed, Walker would take an appeals court seat being vacated by Judge Thomas Griffith, who intends to retire in September. The Judiciary Committee also is considering 49-year-old Cory Wilson, a Mississippi judge who has been nominated to a seat on the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Asked by Hewitt if he can assure veteran judges that their successor “will indeed be confirmed before the election,” Graham said, “Well, if you wait, you know, (until) November the 1st, no. So do it now.’’
