RIP John Prine

Forums:

Wait awhile eternity........

He was one of our heros.

Nothing but love for John.  So sad that he's gone.  So glad that we got to spend some time with him.  May he be forever at peace.

Dammit. RIP to a music legend.

Just did the 8pm howl in his honor.

i Found you too late

You loved us so good

RIP John.
Many moons ago, when I first heard Bonnie Raitt sing Angel From Montgomery, I had to find out who the songwriter was.
That opened up a whole new world of musical talent.

Time to put on an illegal smile and raise a toast.  The full moon will be a little brighter tonight.

Amen to that Ken.

Thanks John for sharing your soul.

Prayers and strength to his family.

RIP to a legend

So glad I had his music in my life. Was on the porch playing out of his "Bruised Orange" songbook last night. Copyright 1979, list price $5.95.

Was fortunate enough to have lunch with him once at Snowbird, and he played my guitar at the radio station. "Now that you played it, you have to sign it." He was the first of about 40 autographs on it.

Damn, we are so lucky to have him in our lives. It was a GREAT run. His music will keep his spirit alive forever. Maybe he's playing again tonight with Steve Goodman. "Souvenirs."

Funny Druba, I just had to edit this 'cause I posted that same video you did while I was typing. It's GREAT. Check it out folks.

John Prine fought the Good Fight all his life, all the way to the end. As much as we will miss him for the balance of our lives, I choose to celebrate him. Here's a pint of Guinness to you, Good Sir, and to the friend I've yet to meet...But there is always that Hope... heart

If you haven't heard JP's most recent album, 'Tree Of Forgiveness' yet, I humbly suggest you make that your parting gift to him. It's just beautiful...

Great story, Slick.

"Throw my brain in a hurricane."

Sounds about right.

Very sorry for him and his family.

I got a few, Jaz. Just came in from outside and thought how nice he passed on a night with such a beautiful moon. Nice night to wrap it up. Special ending for a special soul.

What a way to end the day.

RIP John. You will be missed.

So sorry to hear.

Thank you John for your amazing gift of song.

His songs will outlive us all.

Bill Monroe said that the first time he heard "Paradise" he assumed it was an old hill song.

No better compliment.

RIP

Sad day. This one hurts

Wow. Well said, from The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

“Made from a mold now broken, John Prine was a walking, grinning argument for human beings as a pretty good species," CEO, Kyle Young, said. "In John's songs, humor and heartache dance together like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. His words and melodies draw chuckles and blood, and tears of sorrow and redemption, all leading to truths widely known but never before articulated. John's mind was a treasure chest, open to us all. We mourn his passing, even as we hold the treasure.”

A funny line about John Prine that's attributed to Kris Kristofferson in the NYT obit:

Mr. Prine was a relative unknown in 1970 when Mr. Kristofferson heard him play one night at a small Chicago club called the Fifth Peg, dragged there by the singer-songwriter Steve Goodman. Mr. Kristofferson was performing in Chicago at the time at the Quiet Knight. At the Fifth Peg, Mr. Prine treated him to a brief after-hours performance of material that, Mr. Kristofferson later wrote, “was unlike anything I’d heard before.”

A few weeks later, when Mr. Prine was in New York, Mr. Kristofferson invited him onstage at the Bitter End in Greenwich Village, where he was appearing with Carly Simon, and introduced him to the audience.

“No way somebody this young can be writing so heavy,” he said. “John Prine is so good, we may have to break his thumbs.”

Another I couldn't copy and paste was in the Daily News.

When the throat doc mentioned a special plastic shield and the efforts to protect his vocal chords during surgery, John asked "Have you ever heard me sing?"

vodka + ginger ales all around. sniff...

Not only did he pass on a night with a great moon, it was National Beer Day!

Can't find the words.  RIP John

...it took a supermoon to cover the hole in the universe he left.

RIP  Bon Voyage!!

If you haven't had the pleasure already, I highly recommend checking out this 2 cd set of recordings John made the year before his debut.  The first disc is essentially a solo demo of his first album recorded at a Chicago radio station after he'd been interviewed by Studs Terkel, and the second disc is a recording from a local club show.  Top notch:

Highnote- thanks for the Christmas in Prison link.

Sure is a sweet one.

I only saw him once, about 3 years ago.

His songs brought tears to my eyes several times during the show.

I guess it was the combination of his tone, the words, and the guitar playing

that made it so emotionally charged for me.

I really wanted to see him again before he went, and recently, i had been checking his tour schedule.

Bummer.
Thank you John Prine.

Great Prine workshop vid from Strawberry Music Festival at Camp Mather in 1986.... Some great songs delivered with a Q&A,

(The opening is Prine listening to the preceding workshop by Jerry Douglas doing Bill Monroe's Big Mon)

Thanks for that link, Treblemaker. I look forward to checking that out.

Don't forget this link to a full show from Hardly Strictly in 2017 I posted in another thread. My last time seeing him. http://www.hardlystrictlybluegrass.com/2017/webcast/?mrid=114092

Lots of great shows from various artists in the Hardly Strictly archives.

Waited a couple days to open this thread. I am still not ready.

Hello in there.  Hello.

Glad my last Prine show was with you, Mark. Thanks for the seat and the "hospitality".

That was my last JP show also Slick. Glad you were able to join us.

Poke around for the interview with John Prine & Sturgill.

Good stuff.  And good for a laugh if you need it.  And you know you do.

I was lucky enough to record & see John Prine @ Strawberry Music Festival in 1993........Here is that recording.......Enjoy!

Thanks, Budboy.  I'm gonna dial that in when I log on to work later.

I love this from John Isbell's NYT Opinion piece about John Prine, :

"And there was more to John’s life than music. John and Fiona Prine had a beautiful relationship, loving and balanced and kind. Fiona understood John better than anyone else. After Amanda and I were married, Amanda started asking all the couples we knew, “What’s the secret to staying together?” John and Fiona gave the same answer, and it was the best one we’ve heard so far: Stay vulnerable. John remained vulnerable in love and in his work. He never played it safe."

Thanks for that link, Turtle. It's a good one.

This is from wikipedia but probably true.

Roger Waters, when asked by Word Magazine in 2008 if he heard Pink Floyd's influence in newer British bands like Radiohead, replied, "I don't really listen to Radiohead. I listened to the albums and they just didn't move me in the way, say, John Prine does. His is just extraordinarily eloquent music — and he lives on that plane with Neil Young and Lennon."

Very cool interview from CBS.

I thought we'd already posted the link to this truly beautiful article.

John Prine: The Last Days and Beautiful Life of an American Original

I really enjoyed the Elvis Costello remembrance.  Always found the "new Dylan" tag shallow.   Diversity and nuance are blessed gifts.

There's a 2018 performance by Prine on Austin City Limits tonight.

WPLN will be sharing stories of and about John Prine including favorite shows, stories from the road, favorite lyrics. The program will air Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. on 90.3 WPLN News. You can listen on your radio if you get this channel or stream WPLN online.

Thank you Judit. That was tearful and special.

Would be great to hear what Iris sent.

Yes, Fiona's message was so loving and beautiful. I weep so easily... but who wouldn't while listening to that.

Love to all of you.

That "Irish Wake" was a bit disappointing. I bagged it after a while.

Thanks for the audio, Judit. Touching to hear the story.

But aren't we the lucky ones for having John and his music in our lives!!!  And his songs live on!

Sent the audio link to some friends this morning, Judit.

First reply - "Shit....as if I needed another reason to cry this morning.  Wow, powerful."

Thanks so much judit for posting the link for Fiona's message

>>>But aren't we the lucky ones for having John and his music in our lives!!!

How very lucky indeed...the chances that people take at certain points in their life...

all that he left is what we would've missed if he had stayed at a steady job with an assured pension and kept all that bottled up...

John Prine Family Schedule “Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine”

The John Prine family, in partnership with Oh Boy Records, have scheduled “Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine.”

The event will premiere on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Prine’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

According to a press release, “the tribute will feature family and friends sharing memories and songs while raising money for several charitable organizations including NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Alive, whose Grief Center is providing free counseling sessions to anyone in Middle Tennessee who has had a family member die of COVID-19.”

Prine passed away on Apr. 7 at the age of 73. He was hospitalized in late March with COVID-19 symptoms.

More information about the event will be announced soon. To tune in, head to Prine’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
