RIP John.
Many moons ago, when I first heard Bonnie Raitt sing Angel From Montgomery, I had to find out who the songwriter was.
That opened up a whole new world of musical talent.
So glad I had his music in my life. Was on the porch playing out of his "Bruised Orange" songbook last night. Copyright 1979, list price $5.95.
Was fortunate enough to have lunch with him once at Snowbird, and he played my guitar at the radio station. "Now that you played it, you have to sign it." He was the first of about 40 autographs on it.
Damn, we are so lucky to have him in our lives. It was a GREAT run. His music will keep his spirit alive forever. Maybe he's playing again tonight with Steve Goodman. "Souvenirs."
Funny Druba, I just had to edit this 'cause I posted that same video you did while I was typing. It's GREAT. Check it out folks.
John Prine fought the Good Fight all his life, all the way to the end. As much as we will miss him for the balance of our lives, I choose to celebrate him. Here's a pint of Guinness to you, Good Sir, and to the friend I've yet to meet...But there is always that Hope...
If you haven't heard JP's most recent album, 'Tree Of Forgiveness' yet, I humbly suggest you make that your parting gift to him. It's just beautiful...
I got a few, Jaz. Just came in from outside and thought how nice he passed on a night with such a beautiful moon. Nice night to wrap it up. Special ending for a special soul.
Wow. Well said, from The Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.
“Made from a mold now broken, John Prine was a walking, grinning argument for human beings as a pretty good species," CEO, Kyle Young, said. "In John's songs, humor and heartache dance together like Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. His words and melodies draw chuckles and blood, and tears of sorrow and redemption, all leading to truths widely known but never before articulated. John's mind was a treasure chest, open to us all. We mourn his passing, even as we hold the treasure.”
A funny line about John Prine that's attributed to Kris Kristofferson in the NYT obit:
Mr. Prine was a relative unknown in 1970 when Mr. Kristofferson heard him play one night at a small Chicago club called the Fifth Peg, dragged there by the singer-songwriter Steve Goodman. Mr. Kristofferson was performing in Chicago at the time at the Quiet Knight. At the Fifth Peg, Mr. Prine treated him to a brief after-hours performance of material that, Mr. Kristofferson later wrote, “was unlike anything I’d heard before.”
A few weeks later, when Mr. Prine was in New York, Mr. Kristofferson invited him onstage at the Bitter End in Greenwich Village, where he was appearing with Carly Simon, and introduced him to the audience.
“No way somebody this young can be writing so heavy,” he said. “John Prine is so good, we may have to break his thumbs.”
Another I couldn't copy and paste was in the Daily News.
When the throat doc mentioned a special plastic shield and the efforts to protect his vocal chords during surgery, John asked "Have you ever heard me sing?"
If you haven't had the pleasure already, I highly recommend checking out this 2 cd set of recordings John made the year before his debut. The first disc is essentially a solo demo of his first album recorded at a Chicago radio station after he'd been interviewed by Studs Terkel, and the second disc is a recording from a local club show. Top notch:
I love this from John Isbell's NYT Opinion piece about John Prine, :
"And there was more to John’s life than music. John and Fiona Prine had a beautiful relationship, loving and balanced and kind. Fiona understood John better than anyone else. After Amanda and I were married, Amanda started asking all the couples we knew, “What’s the secret to staying together?” John and Fiona gave the same answer, and it was the best one we’ve heard so far: Stay vulnerable. John remained vulnerable in love and in his work. He never played it safe."
Roger Waters, when asked by Word Magazine in 2008 if he heard Pink Floyd's influence in newer British bands like Radiohead, replied, "I don't really listen to Radiohead. I listened to the albums and they just didn't move me in the way, say, John Prine does. His is just extraordinarily eloquent music — and he lives on that plane with Neil Young and Lennon."
WPLN will be sharing stories of and about John Prine including favorite shows, stories from the road, favorite lyrics. The program will air Wednesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. on 90.3 WPLN News. You can listen on your radio if you get this channel or stream WPLN online.

>>>But aren't we the lucky ones for having John and his music in our lives!!!
How very lucky indeed...the chances that people take at certain points in their life...
all that he left is what we would've missed if he had stayed at a steady job with an assured pension and kept all that bottled up...

John Prine Family Schedule “Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine”
The John Prine family, in partnership with Oh Boy Records, have scheduled “Picture Show: A Tribute Celebrating John Prine.”
The event will premiere on June 11 at 7:30 p.m. ET on Prine’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
According to a press release, “the tribute will feature family and friends sharing memories and songs while raising money for several charitable organizations including NAMI (the National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Alive, whose Grief Center is providing free counseling sessions to anyone in Middle Tennessee who has had a family member die of COVID-19.”
Prine passed away on Apr. 7 at the age of 73. He was hospitalized in late March with COVID-19 symptoms.
More information about the event will be announced soon. To tune in, head to Prine’s YouTube and Facebook channels.
