It's an interesting point that he's making. It all depends on whether, as a politician, you're ok taking money from special interests groups and presumably lying that you'll help them later on down the line.
Isn't that the rub? The whole quid-pro-quo thing again?
Uuuh, Obama did plenty to appease his Wall Street overlords + 99% of politicians who take corporate money bend to the will of their corporate masters. Is this really that difficult? Jesus, Ras, go out for a walk and breathe a while...
Was bailing out Wall Street the problem, or rather was it that they didn't have to pay back the money and were allowed to continue doing the shit that was bad in the first place?

Obama bailed out the auto industry, hence Bidens victory in Michigan today.
G W Bush bailed out Wall Street
The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, often called the "bank bailout of 2008," was proposed by Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, passed by the 110th United States Congress, and signed into law by President George W. Bush
Blow it out your ass javs, hater loser
Not difficult to look stuff up kids, just have to learn how to use the Google machine. You may wana take a class.
You're right, Ras, it's not difficult to look things up:
Obama wasn’t as tough with Wall Street as he liked to advertise. His attorney generals never prosecuted bank executives, and he never listened to calls to break up the bigger banks. Maybe that’s because he really didn’t mind if the stock market boomed and Wall Street got rich. In fact, looking back, the big banks never had a better friend than Obama.
Dodd-Frank rewrote the rules and Obama’s marquee financial regulation actually helped the big banks. This is because financial giants can easily comply with the new standards while their smaller competitors struggle. And so Obama watched as community banks, institutions that certainly didn’t create the financial crisis, were inevitably crushed under the demanding weight of his regulators.
According to the National Credit Union Administration, 1,250 federally insured credit unions shut their doors between 2010 and 2015, 17 percent of the industry. That meant billions in business for the institutions that could survive Dodd-Frank, and that means a grateful Wall Street.
So agro, Ras. I know that participating in big boy conversations is tiring for you but please, if you insist on playing with the big kids, try to be nice. Have you eaten your snack and juice box yet today? It might be time. A nap after lunch will also be helpful for you...
Former President Barack is reportedly set to be paid $1.2m for a series of speeches to major Wall Street firms, less than a year after he left the White House.
Ras, that was really good advice to look things up...
Ok javs I'll play, Obama was overrated, he sucked, now lets try to imagine life without Dodd Frank and the Consumer Protection Act. Can you say out of control consumer debt and bankruptcy ? How about another financial meltdown ? Or how about imagining letting Detroit fail. Or no ACA. Can you imagine all that ?

Give dems the WH - 60 in the Senate + HOR and your head will be spinning at the speed of social reform
A) Deny the source if you want, but refuting the evidence it presents is more important. Can you?
B) Ras, you were talking about Obama as some kind of anti-Wall Street crusader. I pointed out that you were wrong. We weren't talking about imagining a world without him or what he did that could be considered good. So for Bill Maher to paint him as some kind of anti-Wall Street president who didn't cave to the pressures of his corporate donors is just plain wrong. Even so, considering the tiny bit of push that he gave against Wall Street, he is definitely the exception and not the rule. One could easily point to many examples of politicians taking corporate money and then dancing to their owners' tune. So yeah, Maher is an idiot who only spouts rhetoric without any kind of significant basis. It's what he's always done. He's a left-wing Donald Trump. Which, hey, if you're into that kind of thing that's your call.
>>>>why would anybody but the bbros/magatts want to discuss obama right now, it's 2020 in the states...
because it's the premise of this thread? that Obama took money from special interest groups then turned around and fucked them and that's what current politicians should also do
Javs I admire your gusto for argument, but if you don't mind, what interest exactly is our country's politics to you ? Are you or were you ever a US citizen ? Do you look to us for inspiration ? Hoping we'd be better beacons of light for mankind ? Respectfully, why you so into us ?
ras, id imagine the answer to your question lies in one of jav's posts above about us foreign policy and "soft power"...via imperialism, sanctions and interventionist foreign policy, us politics effects many parts of the world significantly and is of global interest
also i think i remember reading he grew up here, not sure tho
WTF are you talking about bucky ? You're arguing with folks who agree with you - too funny. Your inability to follow a train of thought is not our issue. Hahaaa you're like 5 thoughts behind. Yes I agree with you agreeing with my initial post, tod too. Obama to blame, is a joke. WTF man you just getting out of work or something ? Crack that beer fire that bone and get in the game.
Allman Bros reunion tonight so its now about time for everybody to get right and get in the game.
Oh nelly, this is getting fun. I'm glad to find out that I seem heady. I was always treated like a custy on lot due to my clean clothes and inability to haggle with the friendly mushroom dealers, so headiness is a new look for me.
Ras, I lived in the states from 80-81, 89-95 and 96-04, plus some months in 05. My sister is a US citizen as are my brother-in-law, niece, nephew and a great many friends and former lovers.
Also, my ancestors lived in the US before there was a US, from about the 1720's until around 1870 when my Great-Great-Grandpappy moved from Kansas City, Missouri to Bolivia to strike it rich in silver mines, and then migrated down to Chile. His father was one of the founding members of Kansas City, Missouri, and at one point my Grandfather could've sued for a great deal of land in the area, but he didn't have the 50k to pay for the process (1950's money). You can read more about my ancestry here:
There's even a picture of my granddad in a Museum in Kansas City looking at a painting of Yoacham Tavern, owned and built by his Granddad (Great-Grandad?).
But as Daylight pointed out, my main concern, apart from personal history, has to do with the sphere of influence that the United States lords over the world. If you're unaware of this you really should do your research. From military intervention such as the 1973 coup d'etat in my country which was orchestrated, financed and pushed by the CIA, to the economic pressure weilded by Obama and every other President before and after him, the United States has consistently used countries like mine to further its own goals with no regards to ethics or the wellbeing of the people in those countries. Further, since Trump took office there's a disturbing trend of normalizing right-wing violence, including racism and xenophobia throughout the world. Hell, I saw a dude wearing a confederate flag at a protest the other day, which is pretty weird - not to mention all the Gadsden flags people are flying and the extreme normalization of violence. FURTHER, Chile is coming up on a pretty momentous vote on whether or not to write a new constitution, since the old one was imposed during the right-wing military dictatorship which terrorized my relatives and many others for almost 20 years (yup, the one the CIA orchestrated). So, does that answer your seemingly respectful question? Doesn't seem like the answer was that difficult to think of on your own. For a brief moment I had hoped that a candidate like Bernie might knock some sense into the world, in particular the extremely polarized Chilean populace.
And now, back to the main point: you said something like "my man, Bill, speaking truth as usual", to which I tried to point out that Maher is a hack who just jumps on one easy talking point and then screams until it sounds like logic, but the evidence just plain and simple does not back him up. Here's an article from HuffPost if that's going to appease the ad hominem attacks in here:
So yeah, to say, as Bill does, that taking money from Wall Street isn't going to corrupt politicians is just plain old not true. For every tiny step against Wall Street that Obama pretended to take, he benefitted them a million times over. Maher is a hack. Think for yourself. Read sources instead of listening to screaming talking heads.
No different than a Russian bot....lol....that's a good one, I like that.
Oh, and my Great-Great-Grand Uncle died fighting in the Civil War. He was a confederate but he was also a fairly poor farmer type. Don't hold it against me, ok?
HuffPost is listed on mediabiasfactcheck as 'mostly factual'. Now can we talk about the central issue or are they too far left now for the conversation?
>>> Javs I admire your gusto for argument, but if you don't mind, what interest exactly is our country's politics to you ? <<<
I cant't (don't want to) believe that someone would post that. Just a reminder, the Earth is round, he's a citizen of the world, we're all connected and invested, we all need to consider what's going on around here (here, the planet). In addition to that, Javs is part of the Viva community and has history in the U.S.A., both of which might easily cause him to have interest.
Ras, consider the rest of us as your fellow Earthlings, change your strain, etc.

Here's an article from HuffPost if that's going to appease the ad hominem attacks in here:
https://www.huffpost.com/entry/obama-wall-street-speech-400k_n_5900bf16e...

Oh, and my Great-Great-Grand
Oh, and my Great-Great-Grand Uncle died fighting in the Civil War. He was a confederate but he was also a fairly poor farmer type. Don't hold it against me, ok?

HuffPost is listed on mediabiasfactcheck as 'mostly factual'. Now can we talk about the central issue or are they too far left now for the conversation?

>>> Javs I admire your gusto
>>> Javs I admire your gusto for argument, but if you don't mind, what interest exactly is our country's politics to you ? <<<
I cant't (don't want to) believe that someone would post that. Just a reminder, the Earth is round, he's a citizen of the world, we're all connected and invested, we all need to consider what's going on around here (here, the planet). In addition to that, Javs is part of the Viva community and has history in the U.S.A., both of which might easily cause him to have interest.
Ras, consider the rest of us as your fellow Earthlings, change your strain, etc.
