Over the last couple of days I have heard people (all men, actually) say they are uncomfortable with people being judged on high school actions. Right or wrong - my immediate thoughts when someone says this to me are - 1: that the speaker most likely has something in their past they are not proud of and would like to keep it hidden - and 2: The time to think about the stupid shit you did in high school was right before you did that stupid shit. After you did it - you have to own it..

If teenagers were fully
If teenagers were fully capable of thinking about their actions prior to doing them, than we would treat them like adults under the law, and not like minors. Fact is, the human brain doesn't finish developing until about 21 years of age. Yeah, ideally teenagers would all be raised in loving intelligent families that teach them how to think about their actions and make good decisions. In the real world, though, most adults aren't even capable of doing that, let alone teaching their children how to do it.
I personally did a lot of fucked up shit in high school, though nothing that counts as sexual assault or rape. There were a lot of drunken hookups where both parties were wasted, and while both parties were willing always, I can't say that I never pressured or acted inappropriately. I was drunk and a teenager. My group of friends used to steal cars, car radios, deal all sorts of weird rugs and basically get involved in all sorts of unethical behavior. I'm not proud of any of it but I'm also not ashamed of any of it and I certainly wouldn't want to be judged for it.
On the other hand, if you are being nominated to be a judge on the Supreme Court then yes, your entire past is open for scrutiny. But judging people for what they did or didn't do in high school is silly, in my opinion. Or judging anyone for something they did at any point in the past. People change, life moves on. If you can't forgive people and judge them for who they are now instead of who they were then, then that would radically limit the amount of people anyone could interact with...

Well, yeah. I mean, what if a person was a totally fucked up individual in high school, came from a family where he/she was sexually abused, physically and verbally abused as well maybe. Someone who had a totally messed up upbringing, and therefore did messed up things. And then as an adult they sought out professional help, attempted to become a better person and live a good life. Recognized that the things they did were fucked up, maybe even tried to reach out to the people he/she hurt and is trying to live a good life. What right do you or I or anyone else have to judge them? You don't know why a person is how they are or aren't. If they're trying to live a good life now and make up for past transgressions....

Yes, that is owning it - or at least a good start.
Some don't own it - though - like Kavanaugh for example. Kavanaugh hasn't even begun to own his past or tried to show remorse or the wish to rehabilitate himself
>>What right do you or I or anyone else have to judge them?
We have no "right" or duty to judge them - but we are able to express opinions about them.
In the example I used above - Judge Kavanaugh - the Senate DOES have the right to judge nominees to SCOTUS.

I can imagine a lot of people
I can imagine a lot of people who grew up in really violent neighborhoods, pressured into a life of gangs and drugs and violence, maybe even had to kill someone to get into a gang or be killed for not doing it. I'm not saying what they did was good, or right, just that everyone deserves to be judged on where they are at in life now. If they feel no remorse, have no desire to improve and are a total asshole now, than fuck that person. Judge them for that, but if right now they are doing everything in their power to walk the good walk, I personally don't feel it's fair to judge them negatively for fucked up shit in their past. Assuming they're not being nominated to the Supreme Court, of course...

By age sixteen or so individuals SHOULD have a sense of what is right or wrong and realize there is almost always a consequence for most actions.
A Supreme Court Justice nonominee's permanent records should most definitely be scrutinized.

The guy doesn't even have to admit to the particular attempted rape. All he had to do to was apologize for his general frat boy behavior. But he even lied about that!
There is plenty of stuff to keep him off the SCOTUS just based on his previous extremely partisan work history and lies he told to the Judiciary Committee when he testified in the 2000s. Democrats held off his confirmation to the DC Circuit for 3 years based on that alone.

I definitely did stupid shit in HS. When I was 14 and 15 some of it involved criminal mischief, like knocking over or egging mailboxes. It’s the stuff that I can look back on and say I’m not proud, but I admit to it and I think that most people wouldn’t hold it against me.
I bet that Kavanaugh would admit to doing such things if those were the claims against him, and we’d all move on. However, how can one admit to sexual assault and then expect to move on? He has no choice but to deny. There’s a difference between being a stupid male teen who eggs mailboxes and one who physically or sexually assaults someone.

I encountered a cache of old
I encountered a cache of old High School report cards recently while Autumn - Cleaning. The teachers typed or wrote them by hand. Many positive tales of my hard work and improvement but mostly :: "Lazy, should work harder, unfocused, easily distracted..."
Also there was a Xerox transcript of my entire High School career with all the grades and rank amongst classmates.
I was consistently in the top two-fifths of the class, although the grades seem pretty mediocre. Granted, it was a challenging environment with tons of really smart kids. But decades later, most of the teachers' comments are spot-on. I am indeed lazy, and should work harder.
Some of the most positive comments are in Religion, Art, Music, Spanish and Biology classes.

A bit before your time, but from what the newspapers said, Luuudes changed from Rorer to Lemmon back then, and there were counterfeit ones from South America.
Also, High-School Girls back in the 20's and 30's would "make out" with Guys just for fun, as no one had invented video games yet.

I believe in redemption. Also, brains don't stop forming until they are 25. And I cringe at some of my high school behavior just like everyone else. But a SCOTUS justice has to be held to the very highest standards. This gets close to something that you might not overlook, but if you did it would have to be because the now-adult showed remorse, insight, and has changed. K's demeanor at the hearing suggests that he lacks insight and remains am immature and entitled ass, whether he did it or not.
