Great recorded guitar solos - not live

Forums:

Guitar solos in non-live recordings are an interesting animal. When a solo is played live it can and does change over time. Not so with a solo done in the studio for release. For it to be great it has to blow your socks off every time you hear the song. The song, and solo, that got me thinking about this is Matthew Sweet's Sick of Myself with Richard Lloyd of Television fame. Lloyd has provided any number of ultra tasty guitar licks over time but, to my ears, this is the one that always wows me. I remember hearing an advance copy of the album this song from 100% Fun and while giddy with this kick off number, was grinning like a fool with the solos multiple false ending.

Sick Of Myself - Matthew Sweet

What do all of you have?

Can't you hear me knockin'

Just something about it that I never get tired of

David Lindleys solo on Jackson Browns Running On Empty

Jesse Ed Davis on Jackson Browne's Doctor My Eyes

Stranglehold

Too many to choose from, so how about Steve Howe on "Close to the Edge" (not your standard pop solo)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=51oPKLSuyQY

Andy Falco of the Infamous Stringdusters on "The Hitchiker".  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wchw1uMS6i8

That's an older version. He's added a "Shakedown" tease into it. Saw him do it March 1st and to me, it was worth the price of admission.

Elliot Randall 's intro/solos on Reelin' In The Years

Led Boots

Any solo from Blow By Blow or Wired.... Jeff Beck.

Mick Taylor solo on Can't You Hear Me Knocking

Some excellent picks above. Keep them coming.

Any solo from Jimmy Herring on Blue Light Rain - Jazz is Dead's 1st CD.

Eyes of the World, moves me every time I hear the studio version. Steely Dan's " My Old School" and the intro solo into "Don't Take Me Alive".  Of course "Layla". Another is Knopler in " Sultans of Swing"

Just a few of my favs...

How about the main riff in "Ticket to Ride" technically not a solo, but it is the shit

Another Brick In The Wall around the 7:13 mark.

Jesus Christ, people: Steve Hackett, Firth of Fifth.

Absolutely Floops!

Right on, boone.

Red Barchetta (duh)

Black Napkins (which is live actually)> torture never stops

While my guitar gently sleeps

Cissy Strut

War Pigs

Anectdotally I was really grooving to the Scorpions today. There are some great solos in their material, and Randy Rhodes could definitely bring it as well. Brian May (queen) is also a studio favorite for me.

Goosebumpily, hippies should like this one too

Amazing Rhythm Aces The End Is Not In Sight

Fairies Wear Boots

Drop mic..............lol

Brighton Rock (go Phishie)

Reelin' In the Years

Toto: Hold The Line.

>>>David Lindleys solo on Jackson Browns Running On Empty<<<

A good call but that is a live recording, so not eligible for this thread.

I'm going to go ahead and name a couple of classics, even if we're too cool for school to "like" them.

Hotel California & Free Bird.

I thought I posted a mea culpa earlier about the Dusters cut. I didn't pay enough attention to the "not live" part of the qualification. What the hell - good solo anyway.

Lance, mentioning Blow By Blow hit the jackpot with me. "'Cause We Ended As Lovers " is just one reason.

And hard to pick just one of Knofler's solos. Europa by Santana is superb.

Damn, ain't we lucky to have such good music to remember and enjoy?

Poco, second track, second side, of self-named album.

Anything by George Thorogood and The Reverend Horton Heat.

Eminence Front - Pete Townshend

George Harrison - Something

Stairway to Heaven

And I don't even like Led Zeppelin.

Jerry - When the Hunter Gets Captured by the Game.

Does pedal steel count? Jerry on Dire Wolf or Teach Your Children.

Albert's Shuffle -Bloomfield- Super Session

Born Under A Bad Sign- Clapton/Cream- Wheels of Fire

Little Wing - Stevie Ray Vaughan  -The Sky Is Crying

Jeff Beck?  -  I'll take Goodbye Pork Pie off Wired

Who said, Thom's taste in music is better than his taste in politics?

There's a lot of them.

How about Eddie Hazel on Maggot brain

Harmony "solos" on Still The One  (Orleans?)

The entirety of Arlen Roth's "instrumental" (The Persuasions sing chords) version of When A Man Loves A Woman.

All the solos on Aja.yes

Please delete my post from this thread.

Carry on, blue dudes.

Another Brick in the Wall Part 2

No. I thought Stranglehold was a good call Slacker.

I happen to be reading list at Gibson of the best solos done on small amps at the the time, and was surprised to read Ted Nugent laid down the lead for Cat Scratch Fever on a little Fender Champ amp.

The same man who had more Marshall Stacks on stage then any Rocker.

http://archive.gibson.com/en-us/lifestyle/productspotlight/gearandinstruments/10-huge-sounds-recorded-521/

It's a cool list. Relevant.

Robert Quine on Lou Reed's Waves of Fear

Tom Verlaine on The Fire (or Marquee Moon)

Dual solos on And Your Bird Can Sing.

A lot of good ones. I agree, Turtle. Actually, Gilmore is one of my favs when it comes to recorded solos. The introduction solo to shine on you crazy diamond is excellent. Really says a lot and shows a lot of taste without using all that many notes.

I wanna Hold your Hand- Grant Green

A very interesting rendition of he classic Lennon/McCartney song arranged by Grant with Elvin Jones on drums. A bossa style beat with a twist.Very interesting guitar solo.

How could I forget Hotel California. And how about Comfortably Numb...

>>>>Larry Carlton is the man...

Yeah, I agree.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ9Xk-VoGqo

I can forget Hotel Calif- wish it had never been recorded.

On the other hand - how could I forget Robin Trower's Daydream

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fDjg40GjE5k

Gonna see Robin Trower next Saturday in Portland...

http://auramaine.com/events/18-robin-trower/

Enjoy Boone. My plan was to catch him in Glenside, PA tomorrow or as a backup in Montclair, NJ on Saturday. These damn snowstorms screwed up my work schedule & now I have to work both evenings. I was really looking forward to it too. Just glad I didn't buy tix in advance.

Hotel California is a pretty forgettable tune.

Hotel California is a pretty forgettable tune.<<

I've certainly tried.

One of my favorites is from Jimmy Page and the band Led Zeppelin with the song “Since I’ve Been Loving You” off of their album titled “Led Zeppelin III”.

There’s a good reason why at the 3:40 mark of this song that lead singer Robert Plant tells us all to “watch out” and that is because Jimmy is about to kill all of us with a searing solo that clocks in at 1 minute and 20 seconds of sheer guitar wizardry.

Have a listen for yourself ————>  https://youtu.be/N_lSJ-0Gl7Q

Yep, one of my fav Zep tunes fo sho

Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit) on the song "Hurt No More" from the album "The Calling".
