People Who Don't Get Jack White

Forums:

I'm working on a venn diagram, so please take a moment to answer the survey below. Thanks.

"I don't like Jack White, but I love..."

A.) John Mayer

B.) Joe Bonamassa

C.) Jonny Lang

D.) Toasted white bread (dry)

E.) Four fried chickens & a Coke

I loathe Jack White

D and E

Jack White couldn't carry (A)-(C)'s guitar picks..

That said, I thought his "metal" band was cool (aluminum instruments designed for use on cruise ships).  Points for weird.

>> Jack White couldn't carry [John Mayer, Joe Bonamassa, or Johnny Lang's] guitar picks..

And yet is a more skillful and accomplished songwriter.

I guess wankery doesn't count for everything (well, except for a significant portion of one's cd collection).

I just watched a video of his, Connected by Love.  That one was not my cup of tea, but what's not to get (per subject). Why don't you suggest another video, Mark

Are you familiar with Jack White's previous bands, Judit? Might be a good place to start.

I don't like his voice.

The blues^ geeks will probably say he doesn't have soul.

Hey everybody. I definitely appreciate the discussion, but please select one or more of the answers from the list. This is for science. Thanks, all.

Mark, if I read your post correctly, those questions are only to be answered if you dislike Jack White.

Judit ~ This is one of my favorites that you may find more to your liking. Alone In My Home

p.s. A friend of mine who would absolutely know for sure swears Jack Whites farts smell like fresh out of the oven peach pie.

People over a certain age can't like Jack White. They just can't.

I only half don't like Jack White, so I'm going with half of E

>>>>Mark, if I read your post correctly, those questions are only to be answered if you dislike Jack White.

That is correct, Tony.

Zoners who are fans of Jack White can feel free to hang out here, share music, and enjoy each other's company.

Why no mention of Jack Black?  White privilege.

I don't like JW or anything on the list.

What do I win?

Nothing. You win nothing, Surfdead.

I think I "get" all three musicians, but not my cup either and kind of creepy in a "Son, stay away from my daughter" way.

Haven't hear from Jack Herer lately.  Used to be good bud of mine.

He's still dead.

I don' get it.

My wife just got tix for SF.

Goddamnit. I post simple directions, and you miscreants can't just give me the sweet sweet data I need to complete my totally pointless venn diagram?

Fine. I'm going to start assigning answers at random.

Fake news.

I don't much like Jack White, but I don't much like any of those things listed either.

I like ONE fried chicken and a coke, and toasted white bread is OK, but it's got to be fresh bread and there's got to be some butter involved.

But Jack White?

Meh.

I like butter.

I listened to Alone in My Home, found it sort of 2-dimensional. Tried another, they don't do it for me. It sounds like the stuff my best friend listened to in the late '70s/early '80s, sort of rough sounding pop. Not raunchy enough, nor free enough.

Hate Jack White. Have you seen the Rolling Stones movie Shine A Light? The fake southern accent he uses on Loving Cup is cringeworthy. Sums up the guy pretty well: FAKE

Mark, just to clarify who I voted. It seems that some folks are voting for the actual food items. This a for science, so I'd like to be accurate.

D. Toasted white bread (dry)

Elwood Blues

E. Four fried chickens and a Coke

Jake Blues

I would have picked D if it was rye bread and I hated JW. Like white bread, he'd be better with the crust cut off.

everyone already knows, OCLT.

and it sounds like Judit needs something more raunchy, guys.

lets see if wr can help her out!

I thought  so 73, but folks have commented that they would like butter with the toast, or would prefer rye. Lance stated he would prefer one chicken, as opposed to four.

This is for science, so I felt it important to clarify.

Judit, check out the raconteurs, it is then only white project that I've found tolerable. Although, I prefer the songs Benson penned

>>Hate Jack White. Have you seen the Rolling Stones movie Shine A Light? The fake southern accent he uses on Loving Cup is cringeworthy. Sums up the guy pretty well: FAKE

Hate and fake?  Strong words.  He's certainly not for everybody.

Anyway, I'm a fan and one must stop by Third Man Records if you're in Nashville.  I like most of his other projects and solo records more than The White Stripes.

None of the above.

One of my favorite things white's done was put music to an unfinished Hank Williams song:

You're good, sir. I tallied your vote appropriately, and I thank you for participating.

calls White fake

goes on tour with Furthur

Is that the new Blueli6ht special documentary?

>Is that the new Blueli6ht special documentary?

lol

I prefer Motorhead to Jack White.

Motorhead is not an option here, Weird Steve.

Your answer is now B.

Thanks, Mark. Where will you be publishing your results?

Hoping to have the results published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

I look forward to reading it, Mark. I really enjoyed your paper about Analogism theory of The Clash as it pertains to botany.

Love Jack White, he made one of the all time best "young guy gets to produce a legend" albums with Loretta Lynn.  Runner up in this category is Tweedy's work with Mavis Staples.

The only part of that ill conceived 'it might get loud' documentary about jack white, the edge and jimmy page I enjoyed was the very beginning where white makes a single string lap slide out of a plank of wood, pick up, coke bottle, couple nails and some string: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r_F7aiOvdwE

He did the same thing with rockabilly queen, Wanda Jackson.

I don't think he's a very good musician but he's clearly a cool muthafucka with style points for days.

he should be a producer.

I agree, Turtle.

>>>avett bros

old 97's <<<

Two of the more notable shoes I've walked out of at intermission.

That said, I dig the Jack White.

Anyone see any of that 'American epic' series on PBS white helped produce where they get a wide array of cool musicians to cover old roots music on antique recording equipment?

it's pretty neat: https://www.rollingstone.com/music/features/american-epic-inside-jack-wh...

>>>clearly a cool muthafucka with style points for days.

Too pretentious for me.

Fair enough, slack.

i saw white on an episode of American pickers once.

he drove a hard bargain for an elephant head:

>>>>>"he drove a hard bargain for an elephant head"

Wouldn't mind having that on my headstone, even if it wasn't true. smiley

The KDTU instrumental, funkifized cover of '7 nation army' ain't bad:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-6N2cLHbnEQ

Kinda liked the first white stripes album. Stopped listening pretty much after the seven nation army thing. Hear some stuff from him here and there and mostly dislike it.

interesting, never caught this episode.

anybody ask Quincy Jones?

There was a security guy at the Beacon (usually the left-center orch door) who looked like Jack White.

This was before the "upgrade."

Don't give Jack shit

but at least your thread grew a little

Just another white boy wanna be bluesman that desperately wants to be as successful as the rolling stones have been forever wink

What is the difference between wannabe blues guys and genuine blues guys?

The blues?

^slack, what is the cutoff age for appreciating White?

I don't know.

I don't know what soul is either.

I guess it's the age when soulful music becomes important to you and you start saying things like "this music has no soul".

"anybody ask Quincy Jones? "

Score!

G: The White Tape

What up Hall.

Thom- D

That Quincy Jones interview is gold

It really is fantastic.

"Giancana."

Hey Mark, how's fatherhood treatin' ya?

I was just looking into a possible CO backpack trip... it's lookin' like another drought/bad fire year here, so the Sierra might be smoked out come Sept.  Maroon Bells area looks pretty awesome.

Fatherhood is amazing, Hall. Little one turns two next weekend.

Highly recommend the Bells. Such a beautiful place.

Two already?  crazy how time flies...

Man, it's such a well-worn cliche of parenthood, but it's absolutely true. She was just born last week (I swear).

Hall ~ I will second the Maroon Bells as an ace spot.

>I guess it's the age when soulful music becomes important to you and you start saying things like "this music has no soul<

I have no opinion on White's soul, but Bonamassa is a soulless vampire.  And I still listen to bands like husker du and dead Kennedys, so I am not necessarily looking for soulful music

I Have No Idea Who He Is.

In the flick "It Might Get Loud," with Jack, The Edge and Jimmy Page, my personal opinion about the whole damn thing was why they hell did they bother to involve Jack and The Edge...

I couldn't agree more, Treble

Potential TOTY here.

Maroon Bells can be awesome, and extremely crowded.

Check out the Weminuche Wilderness Area west of Lake City. Vast. Sparse.

agree on it might get loud

>>In the flick "It Might Get Loud," with Jack, The Edge and Jimmy Page, my personal opinion about the whole damn thing was why they hell did they bother to involve Jack and The Edge...

My opinion is the whole concept was nonsense and shoulda been scrapped, but I'm tellin ya white comes of the most likable by far.

Hanging out on that farm with his wacky vintage outfits, cars, and instruments, Jammin with his kid and such: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Oj8f0w_SMnw

I was thinking that this is Paul’s chance to dog some of Quincy’s half ass trumpet solos.

Is the reason jimmy page hasn't been takin' down by the #metoo movement because he left no survivors?

i can listen to DeStijl almost all the way thru without skipping songs.

Strangely enough, the White Stripes, despite Meg being a terrible drummer, were pretty damn good.

Post Meg he's surrounded himself with better musicians but it misses the WS x-factor, and many times borders on annoying.

>>>Post Meg he's surrounded himself with better musicians but it misses the WS x-factor,

Very interesting observation, and I'm inclined to agree.

I've enjoyed his solo albums (and really, really enjoyed his live performances with his post-Stripes bands), but yeah; there is definitely something missing from the songwriting that seemed  granted with the Stripes.

He's very diva.

Thanks for the link, ateix, but there are no guts there for me.

Slacker, Bellbottoms was okay.

I more liked the KDTU instrumental, funkifized cover of '7 nation army'.

Thanks, y'all.

Are guts like soul?

Sometimes I wish I kept up more with the "newer" artists...   but then I'll start listening, it's almost always pop, and formula is best for babies...     I'm glad folks share their faves here, sometimes that's a nice shortcut to what others are currently enjoying....  but, sadly,  just don't have the time to research pop (I love improv), and I'll usually see the above folks on award shows, late night TV, etc...  besides, I just got King Crimson live in Chicago, can hardly wait to put it on!    So looks like I better be getting me some fried chicken and coke...

<< Are guts like soul?>>

Not in the cross-sectional anatomy I'd see daily doing Cat Scans...      the soul (ghost of an old lady), was a resident 30 feet down the hall in the dressing rooms

>> I love improv

>> I just got King Crimson

First several White Stripes records are pretty good, Avett Brothers are fkkin horrible

Hey my kid turns two in 2 weeks, happy chaos!

>>>Check out the Weminuche Wilderness Area west of Lake City. Vast. Sparse.

Yeah, the Bells area seems like it compares to Yosemite... extreme crowds, but has to be seen at least once, whereas the Weminuche looks more like what I go for in the Sierra:

Vast>Sparce>MtsoftheMoon

Well, in one day you can get a good gulp of the Bells, then eat Sushi and be fabulous in Aspen. Then go to the Weminuche :)

or wait and do the Bells when I'm too old to hike more than 25 miles.

Currently looking at 'lollipop' route from Rio Grande Reservoir:  Ute Creek West trail>Continental Divide Trail>Vallecito Trail>Rock Creek Tail>Ute Creek East.

How concerned should I be about getting a heavy (Donner party-esque) snow storm in early September?

Typically dry, but expect sub-freezing temps at night.

cool, sounds like the Sierra.

Ned, will you be attending the Jack White shoe here in August @ Broomy?

I have no plans to. Who's he playing with? His all chick band is great.

He actually recruited a bunch of Jay-Z's backing band, plus some of the other players he's been with for the last 6+ years. Not totally clear on exactly what the lineup will look like, but I'm excited.

our pbs station has a 2 hour American Epic Sessions special coming on at 9 tonight w/jack white, t-bone burnette, beck, los lobos, nas, alabama shakes, willie nelson, taj mahal & others something something recreating the muiscal past using a recording lathe........ looks interesting

I don't know anything about what you're talkin bout, hilman.

Sounds kinda neat, have any publications like rolling stone or anything written about it?

I dig Jack White, a lot! Seeing him here in August and am very much looking forward to it.
