And they were put on the bill at the Fillmore in 67-68 between say, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Airplane and Big Brother, How do you think they would be received by the crowd and critics? And yes they can bring their modern gear except for lights.

If you took mid-90's phish and put them in the mid-60's yes, people would shit their pants. Late 80's phish probably too. The Phish from 2003-04 was hit or miss, so would say not so much, I really didn't think much of 12-14, 16. It really depends on the year, the drugs, the setlist. I think mid to late 90's phish could have gone toe to toe with just about anyone, including Miles. Miles was the one opener that the Dead had a hard time following if I recall correctly (seems like Jerry mentioned this in a Spin magazine interview in the 80's).
Quicksilver
Steve Miller
Pink Floyd
Yardbirds
Taj Mahal
The Mothers
Paul Butterfield
Big Brother
The Airplane

I guess it is would've been similar to as it is now, but even moreso ... the Zappa-esq disjointed flow of some songs might be kind of a turn off to those who are mostly used to arrangements and jams that "flow" more smoothly without as many quick turns or stops. I just don't think people had been "conditioned" for this sort of thing at that stage of the game. But I'm sure plenty would dig it nonetheless.
STILL, I can't help but comment (yet again) on the "get the needle out of your arm, daydreaming about this or that sort of what if 'scenario'" that often accompanies the psychological profile of a "phan" ... which I think goes hand in hand with having an institutional "red headed step child" chip on one's shoulder in sub-cult / sociological terms.

well ok then. I have been collecting original Fillmore posters, BG and FD lately. Ive also been listening to some of wolfgang's great shows from the time. Then I heard a wicked Phish jam and then I started a thread. I do like the notion that Phish can BE the time machine. I caution that music in every band you have ever heard is derivative of some other tune from some other band. You think Jerry never listened to Bloomfield or Clapton with awe? Funny you mention zappa cuz the Mothers were as disjointed and ridiculous lyrically as Phish also with an awesome guitar player. I wouldnt call myself a Phish freak but I am willing to admit that they can fuckin jam. I was listenng to them when they were a bumper sticker in VT. Graham served danish to his fans for breakfast, Phish chose donuts.

What about a silly fun experiment re: social psychology? :-)
(kind of like the way I put the "re:" in there just to "bother" ned)
It's only been in the past decade or so that I've grown to really like Phish and like the disjointed nature of some of their songs in terms of mixing things up ... although couldn't take a steady diet of it. Three shows in a row is about my limit, but could easily see a "bakers dozen" of GD material without flinching. But yeah, when Phish "gets there" in terms of a night when everyone is clicking, and the setlist is conducive, I think the jams are very transformative and would be well received (via time machine).

I find the comparison of Phish to Zappa or The Mothers absurd. Listen to Absolutely Free or the live The Mothers - Slightly Ahead Of Their Time, Lumpy Gravy, Jazz From Hell, Orchestral Favorites, Hot Rats, etc. and I find no comparison.
