If Phish had a time machine...

Forums:

And they were put on the bill at the Fillmore in 67-68 between say, Paul Butterfield Blues Band, The Airplane and Big Brother,  How do you think they would be received by the crowd and critics? And yes they can bring their modern gear except for lights.

What do you think?

My understanding is that on his first tour Hendrix wasn't even received well.

I think it's too much for the crowd. Like when Marty McFly played Johnny B. Goode at his parent's prom.

Doesn't this premise kind of undermine a large part of the initial appeal of phanners "getting in on the ground floor" (late 80's & early 90's) of a splintered sub-cult of the Grateful Dead who were on their (relative) decline?

I think I read that when Hendrix first played the Fillmore he opened for the Airplane. After the first night, the Airplane suggested Hendrix be the closer. Cant say for sure but that's the story.  I think minds would be melted by Phish, Overload being a possibility.   And of course they would have to be called The Phish Blues Band cuz everyone was.

Yeah is does FOM, just a phun hypothetical. Phish would be based on music alone.

Who's promoting this?

Put them on a bill with Beefheart or Zappa.

Back in those days, audiences were pretty forgiving. Almost everybody liked almost everything, even if it was crap.

Some people still like crap today.

Go figure.

It would be a Helms/Graham joint venture.

Pick 2 or 3 others to play with them on the bill.

Phish,  P. Butterfield with Bloomfield, Airplane and Hendrix

There were so many better bands back then I don't think people would rate them too highly

>>>>Put them on a bill with Beefheart or Zappa.

Yeah.  Zappa was the closest thing to Phish back in that era.

aww now you done it Greg.  Here come the Phish haters cheeky.  I think since many if not most were billed as "dance shows"  the dancers would like them. so there is that.

Their song lyrics wouldn't make any sense back then either...

even on the Owsley...

Blecch. The mothers sucked eggs.  Frank wasnt Frank til he was Frank. He hated smelly hippies and it showed.

I thought about the lyric thing. You are probably right about that. People looking for meaning like folkies might not have gone to an electric event then. but truthfully, I think Phish can create a jam as good as anyone so they would keep the folks groovin.

All the songs they cover wouldn’t have been written yet.

If Phish had a time machine Gordo would have gotten away with the boat house incident

Zappa was the Weinstein of Rock and Roll.

I think this would be a great tune for Phish to cover, if they haven't already.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnN6_I1z-2E

all the Blue eyed blues bands at the Fillmore played many many covers.

first tour Hendrix wasn't even received well.<<<<<<<<<

when he opened for the monkees maybe

The Airplane didn't want to follow him on night three of the famous 3 night stand at the Fillmore in June of 67- he closed.

Of course Butterfield was the rage in 66 at the Fillmore - nobody could top them- and then the Cream came around the following summer.

Cream! yes, That would be on the bill. Apparently Clapton and Mike B. had a mutual respect. All these guitarists liked high treble tone wailing too.

If time were only part of the equation
Then you could draw the boundaries of our cage

>>>>>>> Gordo would have gotten away with the boat house incident

More likely the Angels woulda just gone ahead & beat him to death instead of a mere beatdown . . .

That makes absolutely no sense, Bob.

If Phish had a time machine they were in charge of, why would they allow the Angels to beat him to death if they could avoid it, you know, temporally.

Are you just trying to sound like Doc Martin or Coyotte in this situation?

.....because they are usually the ones to randomly assert the toughness of bikers for no apparent reason and completely out of context.

It depends, which phish, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 or 4.0? Lol....

If you took mid-90's phish and put them in the mid-60's yes, people would shit their pants. Late 80's phish probably too. The Phish from 2003-04 was hit or miss, so would say not so much, I really didn't think much of 12-14, 16. It really depends on the year, the drugs, the setlist. I think mid to late 90's phish could have gone toe to toe with just about anyone, including Miles. Miles was the one opener that the Dead had a hard time following if I recall correctly (seems like Jerry mentioned this in a Spin magazine interview in the 80's).

Quicksilver

Steve Miller

Pink Floyd

Yardbirds

Taj Mahal

The Mothers

Paul Butterfield

Big Brother

The Airplane

These would all be good matches with The Phish IMO

Smiley do you believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theories?  Oh how I SO love Debunking that one . . . .

>> Smiley do you believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theories?  Oh how I SO love Debunking that one sniffing my own Farts . . . .

You're welcome.

<<<Smiley do you believe in Chemtrails conspiracy theories?

No. Never gave it much thought.

Is it my turn to ask a random stupid question now?

How is this going to work?

I'm sorry (not sorry)  I embarrased you about your stupid nonsensical post,

causing you to get all lashy outtie and on yet another inane tangent.

if the queen had balls, she d be king

Bwa ha Ateix for the cheap shot pile on - nice work both of you, reflects very well on this website.

I've always been partial to the fall 1995 tour which had that scorching Missoula show.

sleep it off sideshow, your pill popping/drunk is showing

Dude I got attacked first now it's a pile on with accusations of hard drug use?  Wow I kinda expect Dochieness from this site but really?

& besides I was known for Blow use, not Pills, get your Rugs accusations straight.

Mr Conspiracy Theory accuses me of being Nonsensical & Inane?

So Smiley, does John Podesta still have that Tattoo of the ancient symbol for Pedophilia on his arm?  Pretty sure you brought that Gem to the zone.  I can't even find that one on Breitbart or InfoWars . . . .

Yeah yeah I know my Melt is 4.9 . . .

but, its a tasty 4.9....

hey! some melts are better than others

<<<<Dude I got attacked first

Settle down, Snowflake, you weren't attacked.

I pointed out the lack of logic to your post. That should have had some merit with a Vulcan like you.

Lack of logic in a thread about time travel.  Ummmmmm . . . . Kayyyyyy . . . .

They could have played Tweezer Reprise & inspired the GD to break up Playin' in the Band . . .

They could have played Tweezer Reprise & inspired the GD to break up Playin' in the Band . . .

Isn't that Sugar Magnolia>sunshine daydream?

Turns out there was indeed a Cream/PBBB shoe.  So add Phish. It could work. I mean they did know about the Golgi Apparatus back then..

time travel is for the byrds...

the early bird catches the worm...phish like worms...so, logically, ya, ppl woulda have to get up reaaallll early to catch a phish show back then...but, they woulda dug it...they woulda thought it was real groovy...

logically speaking...

If the Phish had a time Machine,  they would have likely arrived where they practically sell out 13 "Donut-themed"  Shoes at MSG,  and then the "Dick's"  as well,  plus New Year's Run at MSG...

Go back in Time and they probably had (( the machine )) dialed in OK.

There's  LemonWheel  &  MagnaBall  &  Big Cypress,  all sorts of stuff.

The Coventry debacle was simply an inconsistency,  poor spare parts,  time for Maintenance Break.

Giant Hot Dog is just one Visible Tentacle of the Time Machine.

You can only hope that if they got their start back in the 60’s instead of the 80’s, they might not’ve Sucked so bad.

I like  to think about what CT says.

Think about Moby Grape,  who(m) were absolutely Awesome.

All that talent,  and Skill,  Beautiful Music.

Let's  just say there was a different Fear of the Draft back then,  compared to 1983 0r now.

They were shipping kids over to SE Asia to arrive back home in crates,  but at least these days they have to enlist.

if i had a hammer...

Phish showed us their time machine 22 years ago, kids.

I guess it is would've been similar to as it is now, but even moreso ... the Zappa-esq disjointed flow of some songs might be kind of a turn off to those who are mostly used to arrangements and jams that "flow" more smoothly without as many quick turns or stops.   I just don't think people had been "conditioned" for this sort of thing at that stage of the game.  But I'm sure plenty would dig it nonetheless.

STILL, I can't help but comment (yet again) on the "get the needle out of your arm, daydreaming about this or that sort of what if 'scenario'" that often accompanies the psychological profile of a "phan" ... which I think goes hand in hand with having an institutional "red headed step child" chip on one's shoulder in sub-cult / sociological terms.

well ok then.  I have been collecting original Fillmore posters, BG and FD lately. Ive also been listening to some of wolfgang's great shows from the time. Then I heard a wicked Phish jam and then I started a thread. I do like the notion that Phish can BE the time machine. I caution that music in every band you have ever heard is derivative of some other tune from some other band. You think Jerry never listened to Bloomfield or Clapton with awe? Funny you mention zappa cuz the Mothers were as disjointed and ridiculous lyrically as Phish also with an awesome guitar player. I wouldnt call myself a Phish freak but I am willing to admit that they can fuckin jam. I was listenng to them when they were a bumper sticker in VT. Graham served danish to his fans for breakfast, Phish chose donuts.

So silly fun question or experiment in social psychology? your choice. I prefer silly. thanks for playing all.

This thread could serve as a stern anti-drug PSA.

What about a silly fun experiment re: social psychology? :-)

(kind of like the way I put the "re:" in there just to "bother" ned)

It's only been in the past decade or so that I've grown to really like Phish and like the disjointed nature of some of their songs in terms of mixing things up  ... although couldn't take a steady diet of it.   Three shows in a row is about my limit, but could easily see a "bakers dozen" of GD material without flinching.    But yeah, when Phish "gets there" in terms of a night when everyone is clicking, and the setlist is conducive, I think the jams are very transformative and would be well received (via time machine).

I find the comparison of Phish to Zappa or The Mothers absurd. Listen to Absolutely Free or the live The Mothers - Slightly Ahead Of Their Time, Lumpy Gravy, Jazz From Hell, Orchestral Favorites, Hot Rats, etc. and I find no comparison.

I've seen Phish 6 or 7 times, interesting stuff. Trey is a good guitarist, but he can't hold a candle to Frank.
