ZZ Top Documentary on Netflix

Forums:

New this week made in 2019 worth a view imo

Will have to check it out.   I had tickets to see them last year for the first time, but Frank Beard got sick and they had to cancel.

They are coming to town this year opening for Def Leppard.   Thinking of going, but don't know if I could stomach another Def Leppard show (saw them back in the '80s).

A bit of a promotional puff piece in advance of their upcoming tour but entertaining. Def worth a viewing.

^ good point but I was entertained and looking for something to watch on a rainy day

Long time fan, really enjoyed the doc. The 1st as show I saw in 1977 is one of my all time favorites. Just saw them last fall in a little theater in Syracuse. They surprised me last fall with their intensity. I knew Frank the drummer had a serious drug problem. I think it lasted into the 80's when their shows were short and fast. Pretty sure he is a big golfer now.

I liked Dusty's spread in Tennessee. He was treated for hep c in 2014-15. I will prolly pass on the summer tour, I would rather see them on their own. A bit of trivia, when elminator came out they had a blurb to join their can club. I guy I met trading music joined up. He got tix close to the stage and meet and greets for free for 15 years. Now it costs to be in the club.

I saw them open for John Mayall Jazz Blues Fusion or maybe it was the U.K./USA tour around 1971 at the old Academy of Music here in NYC, odd pairing

Liked the doc when Gibbons was in Cuba. Saw them once in maybe 80/81 when they were all dressed up in like mechanics suits. Gibbons is a one of a kind guitarist that can boggie down.

I thought it was pretty good, although kind of trails off after the success of 'Eliminator'.  How they rode to fame and fortune, are still here touring, with a nod from the Rock HOF along the way.

Maybe the first 8 years might be worth watching, after that it would be like a bad remake of the original, Spinal Tapish

The '94 tour was one for the ages. Moving sidewalks on the stage, some contraption that Billy rode up into the rafters while cranking fuzz box voodoo. They had dancing girls doing a fan dance, Jennifer elfman got her show business start. Very psychedelic on  squeeze of liquid. Go Joe

Man, I took my (chosen, not blood) little brother to see ZZ Top at the Meadowlands when he was around 14, during the MTV days. I was 21ish. He comes out to the car dressed up in his matching jams shorts and shirt, and I was just, Dude, go back inside and change into some jeans and a t shirt. But this was his freak flag self-expression to fly, so I gave in. We walked through the gauntlet of bikers and shit kickers making our way in from the lot to the arena, and nobody gave him any shit, but they rode my ass hard. "Whatchu let him do that for???" "You ain't bringin' him up right!" He was scared to death, but it was all in fun, with a nudge and a wink.

They did the whole big stage show, matching pink flamingo guitar and bass, 3 level stage, girls, legs, etc. Then, they get to the old material, Le Grange, Hot, Blue and Righteous, Blue Jean Blues, Jesus Just Left Chicago... he looks over at me, like, WOW, **THIS** is what you were trying to tell me :) :)

I'm 56 now, he's 48, and we flash back to this day, he credits me with his education :)

The first time I saw the Black Crowes they were opening for ZZ Top and Chris being Chris douched out and the band walked off the stage a couple songs in.  They were booted a couple gigs later. Supposedly it was over Chris bagging on the tour sponsors but I still think it was that they broke the cardinal rule of all working bands: keep playing no matter what.

I watched the doc the other night, I thought it was pretty good. I love seeing the early footage. I saw them once about 20 years ago, not bad. I did catch Billy Gibbons band about a year and a half ago in a small venue. He had Matt Sorum on drums. That was a damn good show. Did a bunch of early ZZ tunes and some blues numbers. Great show. It was cool to see in a small venue.
