Zoner secrets for keeping ants out

What cha got?

It's their world, I understand, but you got any recommendations for keeping them out of the house now that it's starting to warm up and wet up?

"In Europe, one vast colony of Argentine ants is thought to stretch for 6,000km (3,700 miles) along the Mediterranean coast, while another in the US, known as the "Californian large", extends over 900km (560 miles) along the coast of California. A third huge colony exists on the west coast of Japan."

Get a pet aardvark?

gotta try out several kinds of ant bait and see what works best for the ants you have. i use a granular bait containing hydramethylnon from amdro, but you might find a different chemical or brand works better for the specific ants you have on your property.

i also like to spray paper towels with raid and stuff them into any cracks or holes the ants seem to be coming from.

Nutrasweet (Aspartame) packets.  Swipe them from the restaurant (when they re-open) and pour a packet in each ant-hill.

It actually works !!

Don't eat the stuff.  It kills ants.

Diatomaceous earth. It won't keep them out, per se, but it will kill the colony over time.

Multiple brands of traps with different modes of action, citrus oil, twenty mule team borax.

Diatomaceous earth sometimes kills ants, and is always guaranteed to make a terrible mess regardless. Use as a last resort.

copper pennies on their paths or entrances

Or full-on wmd Raid spray once you've had enough

The DE is also great for top-dressing in raised beds.  Slugs scrape themselves to death on the sharp edges of the particles.  (Hint) wineries and Breweries use the stuff in their filtering process,  so it's waste material you can get for free. Couple 50-gallon drums last you long-long time.

Old coffee grounds can helps

ummmmm, don't think these suggestions will fly with the wife -- especially the Raid. But thanks.

These are the little "coconut odor' ants that come out in the spring, especially when it's wet.

(Can you believe it's supposed to be 81 degrees today and then 35 degrees tomorrow night, in Maryland?  81? Maybe they will all come out today and freeze their little ant butts off tomorrow.)

Somehow they found their way into my laptop -- which is weird as every once in a while they will show up and march across the keyboard

I've heard that coffee grounds will keep them out, haven't tried it. Brew then spread around the foundation. Even if that works, ants come on/in to houses on bushes, trees, so I work from the inside.

I use Terro brand liquid ant killer, active ingredient Borax. It works. I've also heard that mixing Borax with a little sugar and water will work. Good luck.

buncha fuckin hippies in this thread

I've heard tales of humans eating DE to kill intestinal worms, and that it will also kill worms in pets. My bag is "food grade," but I can't see choking back a spoon of it.

Borax and sugar solution dipped cottonballs. Look up the exact proportions online.  They swarm the cotton and take the tainted sugar solution back to the nest.  All gone in less than 24 hours. Honestly works like magic  Plus the borax is just soap and not toxic for you if you touch it.

You're on the right track Smiley. Put karo syrup on an index card and top that with borax. Ants go for the karo and return to the nest with borax which will kill them all. It's worked for me for years.

When I lived in Montreal all the crummy student apartments had Roaches.  Among the remedies was Mashed Cucumbers mixed with Boric Acid powder.  You didn't eat it,  but rather applied the goop to baseboards along the walls.

My apt. above a 'Depanneur' (quick-e-mart) had many roaches.  But hey, rent was cheap.

Make sure there's no plants or trees with branches that touch your house.  And Turtles cinnamon suggestion is a great nontoxic way to keep them out if you find where they're getting in from.

My wife's an elementary school teacher.  She brought home an ant farm.  Pretty cool, until the local Argentine ants invaded!  The ant farm ants were much bigger, but the Argentines ganged up on 'em.  Too bad I didn't take a video.

I'm afraid if I use enough bait traps to kill all the ant colonies on our property, the entire house will sink into a sinkhole created by empty ant tunnels.

Paul Stamets has  a mushroom solution but I'm not sure how it works. Decaying mushrooms? Anyway my carpenter ants are back, and I gotta do something.

Toilet paper doesn't keep ants away, fyi
