Your Official Band Review: Good/Bad & The Rest

Forums:

Firstly let me start off by saying I saw the Halloween 2015 run which featured SJ and JK. I was not enamored with them. Each show although hotter than the previous I felt these two leads were not a good fit.  I did not care much for the technique of SJ or the connect the dots soulless play of JK. After the last of the three I swore I was done with them. 18 months later i managed to get myself psyched to see Phil on his 77th Bday in spite of this band. I started off the Bday show 7th row orchestra. The air was thick with anticipation. I will add that I was not expecting miracles and i really tempered my expectations.  I was keen on having Joan back in the fold.

The atmosphere as the band came on stage was, like all Bday shows, electric. Seeing Joan again was marvelous. Now the song selection itself was very good. Unfortunately I felt the mismatch of players, a lack of energy and drive from the drummer, and the play was again soft. It picked up with the Bertha>Broken Arrow but left much to be desired. The sound of silence>Elanor Rigby featuring SJ   meandered and although played well  was almost melancholly at times( even  though executed perfectly) . Box of Rain a great moment in time, could not elevate the crowd beyond being anything but just a great moment because SJ and JK simply can not  deliver Hot rock and roll, the kind that gets your ass grooving and moving.  In any case i tried to remain positive with an eye of getting special guests to throw this gig in to 4th gear.

2nd set had a very strong song selection but was delivered much like the first set. Although brilliantly  executed  I felt the playing was more of the same. It was lacking in creativity, Jamming, energy, drive, soul, and groove.

Side comments. Crosby was sweet. Joan was really good. JK had some  moments but draws within the lines and rarely ventured beyond.  Mark Levy can hold a beat but does not drive the music. SJ although technically a wizard bores the shit out of me. Phil always kicks ass.  No special guests was a let down. I was not motivated to attend the 2nd night. Couch run for me.

Watched the live video stream of 3/16. It was OK but my comments are exactly the same as the first night.   Not sure if I can get excited about attending night 3. Could be another couch show.

Special guests to be announced?

thanks for the review KK

did not listen last night but did see stream of set1 of the birthday show. i will agree on levy. this music really needs russo or molo to drive the music. unfortunately both were booked.

Can someone post the cap theatre posters again?

Im wonderin if they still said "special guests" on them...

Either way, i totally agree KK, theyre missing alot of oomph...rythym guitar, and molo woulda helped...imo

That was some fucking good shit right there ....wink

KK from one KK to another I couldn't agree more. I was not planning on going. I said wtf, Phil's 77 how many more of these we're we going to get. If ever one of Phil's bands needed a 3rd guitarist it was this one. When JK would solo SJ added nothing to it. Maybe if they had a 3rd carrying the rhythm there might be a chance for some interplay between JK and SJ. The Other One was an absolute train wreck. The only songs I really liked were Broken Arrow and Box. I also don't think this line up suites Joan. She's much better with a Luther or Anders.

did ross james pick this lineup?

Stanley probably does Sounds>Rigby well because those are timeless classics.

He doesn't know GD tunes as well as the rest of the classic music catalog.

Molo has been the backbone and driving force of many of P$F's greatest.

Jeff Sipe or Russo would kick some ass ass well.

I agree with your review KK, thx.

No "umph" or drive in this band.

More heady stuff then rockers.

Where was the jam in this band?

Off to JRAD!

cheeky

KK, you've got me wondering what it would be like to have Molo and Russo playing behind Phil.

^that'd be interesting.

phil/molo/russo

I do not always have to hear "GD" tunes !!  I don't want to hear the " cookie cutter" song done the same way all the time...been seeing them since 1974 and I like what Phil and his friends bring to us ! Ya see, it's all about the ride they take us on.....he is the driver, he holds the headlight :)

That is why i go to every Cap Phil show I physically can, it's getting harder and harder for me . Not all of us have the same taste in style or guests and that is ok with me, stay home so those that like like the "heady stuff" can get a tici and go...:)

Hey Kenny

Really well thought out review.  Decided to wait for the lineup to be announced before deciding on attending. So, I have been watching from the couch.

It is beyond impressive that Phil's traveling circus rides again. So lets all give a big shout out to the Bass Boss about coming back east again. Thanks Phil.

Really enjoy Joan, but she seems a bit off this time around. She is singing way down low in her vocal range (these songs are in guy keys) most of the time, seems like more than in the past.  Paid for the pay per view on 3/15 and to watch SJ play the guitar like a piano keyboard is so very cool. It's just not helping the jams, tho'      Last night, he did get into a good call and response with Crosby, but those moments were few.

Drummer seems like he keeping up with the band, rather than driving it.

JK was there....

Started watching JRAD during the 2nd half of Phil's set break. The comparison was not kind.

Paid for 2 views this run to show some support for Team Phil and will likely be watching by 2nd set tonight. Best for last?

Hi Don. I too found myself grooving on JRAD free video stream..

I am sitting in front of my laptop at my dads place in the Bronx, 20 minutes from the  Cap, debating my plan of action. Motivation  is mediocre at best in fact  I have never been so apathetic about a Phil lineup.

If I could have made it up to Port Chester,

The Hüsky would have accompanied my Disco self.

He is a trained Socialization Dog, and qualifies for a Free Ticket.

No one has ever seen a photo of H.I.M. before, so that's what he looks like.

With a proper Cardiod mic on H.I.M. he could Howl the blues stuff with Joan, or Howl along with the Drums/Space hour.

Many Zoners have observed H.I.M.  vocalizing at Live Music events, and can help promote his future stage events.

Didn't Russo and Molo play together at Phil's 70th?

It's looks like you're correct, Bucky. Molo and Russo played the third set.

Set III Performers: Phil Lesh (on Modulus bass), Bob Weir, John Kadlecik, Jeff Chimenti, Joe Russo, Sunshine Becker, Zoe Ellis, John Molo, Steve Molitz, Jackie Greene, Chris Robinson

Add larry and theresa to that double drummer dream band above...;)

So the Orange / Fire colors in the Fur betwixt shoulder and Head are not photo-shopped at all. That is natural Sunlight in the morning producing those colors.

The Blue on the harness and the Red on his lead are about what they look like in real life. Pink Dog tongue; real color.

The original Dog owner has commented upon how much more Red-Orange his fur has changed.

My theory is a lot of Iron in the local water.

So definitely no Iron deficiency, but I ought to be careful about the Calcium, Magnesium, Copper & Manganese balance in the presence of so much Iron.

Stanley Jordan is an acquired taste. Some people like Blue Cheese, Others might like Hagis, hmmmm Stuffed Derma and Sweet Breads, Liver. If all of this sounds good, then Stanley may be your cup of tea.

Fine looking Husky there, Mr. Stu

Mr. Lesh can almost sell out the PC Cap, without announcing a lineup until the last second...

Or, he can afford to pay the total Killer Orchestra and have a few days of rehearsal.

It's all a Big Joke for many, but as a manual laborer,  I need to carefully determine whether a Day's pay is worth the price of a concert ticket.

Always Huge Fun to be at the show, and have a Beer with my Show Pals.

But rather Unslick to make the crowd pay premium $$ for rehearsal time.

It's like the circus with falling-down Elephants and floor-smashing trapeze artists.

>>>>>>KK, you've got me wondering what it would be like to have Molo and Russo playing behind Phil.

They did exactly that during the 3rd set of Phil's 70th Birthday Party at the Bill Graham.....Of course, this was Further and Friends.  I may want to revisit that sometime soon.  (((Elevator))) among others.  Of course, Russo was fairly new to the music back then.

I'd like to see them try it again....and soon.   ....And in the Bay Area...  smiley

Bucky, I just saw your post. blush

I did not love this guitar pairing last time as good as they are apart.

Not paying attention this time

Will likely spot check the recordings later.

Honestly, my GD listening is almost totally Garcia Band these daze.

Awesome looking pooch. Does he also howl, like you do Stu, when the band comes on stage?

KK- one hell of a write-up! Kudos!!!

Do Ross James and Jill decide the players?

Absolutely.

Look how times have changed

Phil taught Russo well

Russo showed up in Marin Co. for Furthur and turned into his own band, after admittedly not being familiar with the songs.

Now, slaying in Brooklyn!

Hope he and Phil play again. And Molo, of course!

Chuck- Stanley is like a ripe Gouda:)

I was at that 70th Bday show- how time flies!

I was at that 70th 50th Bday show- how time flies!...

^^ Grateful Dead Live at Capital Centre on 3/15/1990 Phil 50th Bday

Jack Straw, Sugaree, Easy To Love You, Walkin' Blues, Althea, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Tennessee Jed, Cassidy, Don't Ease Me In China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Samson & Delilah, Terrapin Station-> Jam-> Drums-> Jam-> I Will Take You Home-> Wharf Rat-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away, E: Revolution

I thought this year's B-Day show was Grate, chock full of grate jamming, good singing, really felt Phil's soul shine thru (did I really say that?  Yuk!).  I was at that Cap Cen 1990 show as well but thought the next night (3/18) was far more interesting & well played.

And Kudo's to the TXR Dishwasher crew for Warming Phil Up for his B-Day!  Altho I think he was a bit Tired by Friday . . .

Was SJ rocking the high heels?

He was wearing some kind of sandals w/socks one of the nights, a fashion Faux Pas worthy of a St Mark comment
