Your First Phil & Friends Show

Forums:

I know this is a regurgitated thread but I thought it's been a while and am looking for some shows I haven't listened to before.

Mine was 11/2/99 at The Breslin Center Michigan State  https://archive.org/details/1999-11-02.paf.aud.vernon.8107.sbeok.flacf

It was also the first time I ever saw Warren, and by Low Spark, I was saying to myself, "Who is this guy, and how the heck do I not know about him."

Have a great weekend all Easy Wind at Winstons in OB tonight. For those in or close enough to OB, they put on a nice show.

I don't remember much? That's really odd given my history as a taper. I do know I wasn't loaded in any form.  What I do recall is being glad that Phil was taking up up the mantel and looking forward to what becomes of it. Oddly I do remember the 2001 show well and 2002 even better. Very grateful that Phil didn't forget the NW!!!

This IS an often repeated topic, and it's a good topic, but the same mistakes, IMO, are always made. Ultimately, it all comes down to how we're defining "Phil & Friends".

Just because over the years there was a show here or there billed as "Phil & Friends" doesn't automatically qualify it, again IMO, as a true Phil Lesh & Friends show in the specific way that I believe we're talking about here.

Personally, I don't consider that BCT acoustic set in '94 a "Phil Lesh & Friends" show. I don't care how it was officially billed, that was in fact an acoustic Grateful Dead show, basically the same as in 1975 when the officially billed "Jerry Garcia & Friends" played a couple of shows that were actually Grateful Dead shows; I've never heard anyone call those '75 Winterland and Kezar Stadium shows Jerry Garcia shows. They were Grateful Dead shows.

To me, what we're really talking about here as Phil Lesh & Friends started in April of 1999 at the Warfield Theatre with Trey, Kimock, Page & Molo. THOSE were the first true Phil Lesh & Friends shows that we have all come to know and love and that continue in various forms to this day, and I was at all three of those, front row balcony with my friends for all three, with a lovely bottle of Porfidio tequila at every one (don't ask how).

I was also at that acoustic show in Berkeley in '94, and I don't care how it was billed, that was a (poor) acoustic Grateful Dead set.

Hey there, Lance, old pal.

Okay. First post-GD Phil and Friends show was on my birthday 10/09/99.

25 years later and still not done.

We are everywhere.

Cheers!

THOSE were the first true Phil Lesh & Friends shows that we have all come to know and love and that continue in various forms to this day,<<<

The Trey run was special and if you consider post transplant, sure. But the shows he did at the Fillmore in '98 (there were 6 or 7) has fine playing and were the birthplace of the P&F Empire. I think there was a Warfield gig or two that year as well.

>>>the first show after Kimock's last show

UIC<<<

Having read Chad's post re: the Milwaukee '99 show, I think I am mistaken about UIC being the first show after Kimock's last show.

So I'll revise my answer to simply UIC Halloween '99.

These two, 11/10/99, last show ever at the New Haven Coliseum, first time seeing Derek Trucks as a paid performer. And 11/13/99 at the Meadowlands. Both great Dylan shows, Folsom Prison Blues, I and I in New Haven. The best Visions of Johanna in NJ. First time seeing Larry Campbell. Wow. 1999 was a good year to be seeing Dylan. I caught him at Lake Placid in Feb., several summer shows with Paul Simon as a double bill and then in the fall with Phil Lesh. This was a good launch for Phil to tour nationally. He hit a few bumps early with half the band and road crew walking out on the tour after the 4th show in Ohio. Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes and Jorma were all short notice fill-ins for the rest of the dates and a tour that almost folded.

>>> Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes and Jorma were all short notice fill-ins for the rest of the dates and a tour that almost folded.

Phil gave Derek credit for saving the tour.

From a PhilZone interview:

Derek Trucks: I didn't know any of that music until those days when I started playing with him. I got a random call from him on my cell phone, we were out on the road. Phil Lesh gave me a call. Our soundman was a Deadhead and I was like, "Is Phil Lesh, is he a bass player?" and he was like "oh yeah he's great." So I called him back and he asked me to come out and fill in for the guitar player that split (Steve Kimock) and I was like, "I'd love to but I don't know any of your music. I've never listened to any of the records," and he was like you know, "perfect, come on out." And every day they'd hand me a set list in the morning with three or four CDs and all the tunes burned on 'em and I'd just spend all day listening to these Garcia parts, and it was great experience to have to learn that stuff, be on the spot every night, tunes you learned that morning. It was a great experience, trial by fire.

Cuthbert Ampitheater in Eugene 7/3/01.  First time seeing Phil since Shoreline 95.  First show at the Cuthbert too and it was fun watching all the freeks in rowboats in the little creek right behind the stage.

Had tickets to see Phil and Dylan at Portland Meadows in 2000 but my kid was sick that night and we had to cancel.

Got both Broken Arrow and Pride of Cucamonga.  Plus a Soulshine.  Was hooked.

yea I saw this one too, another great show with a great Dylan set as well. One of the best acoustic sets and at the time I believe only the second Highlands and the only one I ever saw

6/4/99 with Jorma and Kimock. 20 minute opener of Like a Rolling Stone gave a good notion of what was to come.

I was at a table at the back of the Warfield sitting across from Casady and Kantner, which was pretty cool.

oh Lance!

there's a reason why you are a fave of so many and one of my longest perennial crushes lol

you're prob right with your date as far as og PLF goes, bandwise

for me?

first QQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQQ show is where i begin counting!

One For Woody Roseland Ballroom*****trying to find a vid but no Phil. date was 9.21.2000, anyone there to fill in my brain gaps?

the incarnation that mattered most ***immediately*** was this one. so funny, just found so many stubs from 2000/2001, many taped into writing books with so many fantabulous memories of this most glorious time in OurCollectiveLives, for those of us experiencing IT !!!

also did a bunch of those '99 shows with Dillon & Little feat line ups, and def enjoyed because OurPhearlessLeader, and the different lineups were fun. until, the ONE

My first Q show and I loved it. I couldn't believe how easy it was to walk right up front. I really loved Just A Little Light at that show. This was my second Phil show. The next two on 10/30 & 31 at The Wiltern were SMOKING . China Cat- Eleven blew me away.

I also crushed it at the tables so that didn't suck as I traveled from Manila Philippines to Vegas/LA for those three shows.

Didn't notice Klondike posted right above me while I was looking for the date. He bought me dinner one night while there. Thanks, bud. Hope all is well.
