Your favorite sandwiches

Forums:

I know of few things that are able to bond people more than their common love of a particular sandwich. In light of this, I think it is very appropriate for the people who post on this board to name at least five of their favorite sandwiches. This way we can know up front where everyone stands.

Here we go:

1) Chicken Parm

2) Turkey Club

3) Italian Hero

4) Cheese steak

5) Ham, egg and cheese (aka breakfast sandwich)

Anyone with a VLZ Gold account, feel free to PM me your list if you don't want it displayed for the data-miners here.

My roasted pork/Pernil on Fresh Semolina Bread is as good as a sandwich can get. But lately I miss forecast, like last night, and there isn't any leftover Pernil.

italian hero? wtf.

gabagool!

muffuletta

banh mi

reuben

hot Italian hero

I'm going to count falafel as a sandwich

1. Just had one of my favs from a local bakery, Blue Sky:

turkey and cheese on foccacia with pesto mayo, lettuce, purple onions and cucumbers

2. chicken salad

3. pork roll, egg and cheese on a hard roll (breakfast)

4. idk, I guess an italian sub

5. ? philly cheesesteak

yes

I think a Top 3 is a better request. The 4th and 5th aren't really a go-to sammy.

1. The Reuben

2. El Cubano

3. The Philly Cheesesteak

torta ahogada

BBQ Pork Banh Mi

Sourdough Carnitas Melt

Bean and Cheese Burrito (I'm counting it as a sandwich so kindly fuck off)

Tuna Melt

Cheese steak

French Dip, Turkey Club, Cheese Steak

This is not the kind of sandwich you can take on a picnic, but it's hard to beat the Louisville Hot Brown for using up leftover turkey.

>>>3. pork roll, egg and cheese on a hard roll (breakfast)

two rolls? What's a pork roll?

porchetta

I've heard about most of these sandwiches, and eaten some, but I never keep track of the names or recipes.

To me, a sandwich is: you look in the fridge, see what's there, grab some bread, and go from there. Each one is different, depending on what I find and how I feel at that moment.

Baked Bean Sammie ???

Pastrami on rye, with mustard.

When the ingredients are top-shelf, you need only 3 to make perfection.

If you all are counting shit like burritos and falafel, I'm counting the hamburger!

Another vote for the Philly Cheesesteak.

The Roast pork and broccoli rabe from Philly is also amazing.

Three commercial examples which I consume on a regular basis:

§ Cheese Steak works from Ninuzzo (works = grilled Omion, baby Portabello, Red Pepper)

¥ Roast Pork w/ Broccoli Rabe from the place by Dog Park

µ Italian Special from Anthony's (your standard cold Italian sub w/ Ham, Cappicola, Salami, Provolone, oil & vinegar)

Those are made w/ Italian torpedo roll.

At Home,

BLT with local Tomato, Good Bacon

¿ Avocado, Prosciutto w/ Spinach

Usually toasted Rye, but any decent bread will do.

Honorable mention goes to Pork Roll Egg & Cheese (hey, it's a Ween tune, so it must be a good Breakfast Sandwich)

Ever hear of Primanti's, where they put the fries and slaw on the sandwich?

Image result for primantis

I approve of slaw, fries and thousand island dressing on certain sandwiches

No love for pasrtami?

pastrami.jpeg

I missed your post, BK.

I always order a potato pancake with my pastrami.

Porchetta, broccoli rabe, shaved asiago, garlic, olive oil.

Home made roast beef, sliced thin(every home cook should buy a slicer). Get a stock going with onions, garlic/ fresh basil/ long hot italian peppers/mexi oregano and parsley/Worcestershire/soy/peppercorns.  Dip in sandwich in stock.

Pork belly, mix of pickled red onions/ginger/carrots, sambal/soy/honey spread.

Prosciutto thrown in a pan for a few minutes, arugula, olive oil and olive tampanade.

& I'll never turn down a Reuben or a cheesesteak.

Made a killer steak, pepperjack, mushroom, jalapeño last night.

Grilled cheese, tomato, avocado.

Real roast turkey with avo and bacon

French dip

Roast beef po boy

I'm a Pastrami fan, but don't know any local spots that do it right. So it's not a huge part of my Sandwich consciousness.

In Montréal they call it 'Smoked Meat' and there were some great late-nite spots.  But their Pizza was awful, and no such thing as a Cheese Steak.

The Poutine, in all its iterations, was fabulous.

One of my favorite sandwiches is Dark Star > El Paso > Dark Star

Hamburger is go to, and damn near anything with BBQ sauce.

Good thread, Buck.

Enjoy every sandwich.

No love for good old peanut butter and jelly?

>In Montréal they call it 'Smoked Meat' and there were some great late-nite spots

Thanks for the reminder!     Sliced smoke meat on Montreal Jewish rye with mustard is killer!!!  Much better than pastrami -- it's more moist with a concentrated cracked pepper rub. We have family from Montreal that come to the states every July and I almost kicked my father in the balls last year when he told them not to bring down any food.

>No love for good old peanut butter and jelly?

I'll take a grilled fluffer nutter but a standard PB&J, nah.  My kids can't even bring PB to school without being arrested.

Reality Sandwiches

Montreal Smoked vs. a killer pastrami is a very touchy debate.

I've had some kick ass pastrami but i'll take smoked meat any day.

THe GODMOTHER sammy at Bay Cities in Santa Monica  = So Freaking Good !

Chicken Sesame sammy Marias Italian Kitchen Brentwood

Goodbye article on MoSmo vs. pastrami. The comments are also worth reading.

A good BLT on warm wheat toast can hit the spot.  Bacon has to be top-notch.

Pizza Steak w/sauce on the side when visiting folks back home.

A good BLT on warm wheat toast can hit the spot. <<<

sure does i add  Avo for a BLTA !

Back when I was still gainfully employed, we went to New Haven for field & job meetings on our rail yard constr projects so often (2 x a week), we eventually got sick of Pepe's & Modern pizza (& also sick of the constr field guys Glomming onto us & then making our consultants pay for lunch), so we started going to this place on the way back to our office:

https://www.vinnysdeli.com/king-of-roast-beef/

Best fuckin' Roast Beast sandwiches ever.  Also Corned Beef in March (for St Patty's day).  Also Lobster Rolls (but they're $20).

Hot capicola/sharp provolone w/ roasted peppers.

Mmmm.  I wonder if Andrea's is still in Jersey City.

I had a co worker years ago that told me his family would make spaghetti sandwiches from the the leftovers...

Pasta, Salad, Meatballs, Parm Cheese between 2 slices of white bread... each to his or her own I guess.

The oven toasted Italian (grinder) is something to behold if done right...

Pulled pork

BLT

tarragon shrimp salad and jarlsberg

a real cuban (not some bullshit pork and focaccia pannini "cuban"-style anglo sammich)

Banh mi (see comment for cuban)

Bay Cities in Santa Monica <<<

I found a drifting Hundy "C" Note $100 in the Parking lot ! true story # right out my door !

Godmother sandwich. SM.

Corned beef but it must be from Katz's .

just had a grilled tuna with cheese--twas not bad

Another good sandwich is the double decker sandwich from 3/23/74 Cow Palace.

Playing > Uncle John's > Morning Dew > Uncle Johns > Playing

Southern BBQ sandwich (slow bbq'd pork shoulder, slaw and a mustard based bbq sauce)

New York deli brisket sandwich

Hamburger/Cheeseburger/bacon avo Burger

Carne Tortas from a Mexico City Zocalo hole in the wall kind of joint

Reuben  (while car camping or at a festival)

BLT

Avo, jack cheese, tomato on whole wheat (w/mayo)

Hot ham and swiss

roast beef and swiss melt

Rueben, Muffeletta, Pastrami, Meatball Parm

One of my fave sandwiches is the Cuban. It's an increasingly popular sandwich/panini to have on a menu but very few places know the magic. Maybe 1 in 10. Pretty much gotta' go to el barrio if you want it right.

If you're in Fairfield County, a top 5 sandwich is the Kovac's Special from Gaetano's Deli on Post Road in Westport.

- KOVAC’S SPECIAL - Chicken cutlet, prosciutto, fresh mozzarella, roasted peppers & broccoli rabe...all on perfect Italian bread brought up from the Bronx that morning. Next-level.

I like Alton Browns recipe.

Zoner's Choice?

AMERICAN CHEESE!

One of them double decker Viola Lee Blues sammy's plf would serve up

Being from Northern NJ, I am particularly fond of what is known as a Sloppy Joe. Mind you this is not the ground beef and sauce sandwich. A Sloppy Joe in this neck of the woods is a double decker sandwich made with fresh Jewish Rye Bread, meats that may be ham, turkey, roast beef, corned beef, pastrami or tongue, swiss cheese, cole slaw and Russian dressing. The best places that serve them have lines out the door every day that often include people from other countries who are looking for their fix. While they are all good, the best are heavenly.

Not much of a Poutine expert - only had it a time or two. What must a Poutine have, what should it have, what can it have?

Never heard of Tony's "Soppy Joe".

Oh, wait.  I have.

That's a Club.

Maybe Tony's from farther north?

The two-meats/slaw & Russian thingy is frequently billed as a Deli-Duo.

Haven't heard of the NJ sloppy joe but I've taken down more than a few traditional, ground meat joes. Topped with raw onion, served on a potato roll.

I enjoy a BLT once or thrice during the summer

^^^

Poutine is definitely not a sandwich.  French fries with molten cheese curds somewhere between Farmer cheese, Cotija and low-salt Cheddar, drenched in brown Gravy is the traditional Poutine.

Then there are many variants like "Poutine Italienne"  with Marinara instead of brown Gravy.

Quêbec is the place to experience the stuff.  Best places have vintage  70's Naugahyde decor and Marilyn + Elvis + James Dean posters.

Döner Kebap

Rueben

French Dip

Patty Melt with Avocado

Tuna Melt

Milanesa Torta

I love a good cheese steak, Italian toasted sub or a BLT (when I am hungover)  I also make a killer hot ham and cheese

just don't give me a veggie burrito from a dude pulling a cooler on a skateboard. Will only make that mistake once.

The one I've got. And, the next one

that's where The God Mother steps In ! Only at Bay Cities Santa Monica !

You kind of half to in order to change cross the line from being a "condiment/dressing" sandwich to something more substantial.

I have always found BLT's to not be very satisfying and would need fries, big scoop of potato salad, or whatever to be filled.

Zooey, you continue to find the best images!!!

Hall's jack and veg sammich needs sprouts and I'm in. Thanks to saddler for helping me to avoid ordering a sloppy joe in NJ.

I would kill for a diablo sandwich with nice cold Dr. Pepper.

This makes me want to take a ride up to Montreal for a sandwich at Schwartz's Deli.  It has been too long!

^

Back when there were 'Schwartz's' and a couple others on Rûe St-Laurent or nearby in the Plateau area, with Schwartz being the most famous. I'd usually wind up at the one of slightly lesser quality that stayed open later.  Can't recall the name now. Maybe 'Le Main' ??

I think 'Ben's' still exists downtown on St. Catherine; they were still in existence when I was last up for Jazz Fest.  That's like the tourist version of Smoked Meat (and whatever else) but they had / have a million framed photos of celebrities on the walls -- some that you recognize, some that you hardly even heard of.

My favorite sandwich-like food in Montreality was more like Souvlaki on Pita but called 'Shawarma' or 'Shish Taouk' from a place called Basha...
