Yosemite lodging question

Forums:

So the daughter has decided that she wants to see California and being that this might be the last vacation she wants to take with us we're looking into it.

I'd like to spend a few days in Yosemite but of course it's getting late for reservations in early August.  There are some places in Yosemite West available, in the park and about 20 minutes down to the valley.  The only thing available in the valley are tents which I'd rather not do.

Anyone have any experience with this?  And advice would be grealy appreciated.

august is the busiest month...

Go someplace not so full of people? Yosemite in August is like the most crowded outdoor recreational experience you could conceive of.

How about October?

))))))the influx of hoards(((((((

Thom, California is overrun with open-minded liberals, immigrants, and foreign visitors.

Are you sure about this idea?

October's not bad, but the weather is iffy. I know a gal who went in October, did some back country hiking, got snowed in and had to be rescued.

I'd check June Lake, which is in the eastern Sierra, but only about an hour from the Tioga Pass entrance to Yosemite.

Looking forward to the thread where "Thom's Daughter" goes looking for rec weed recs, whilst visiting the Golden State.

if you're stuck with early August I'd skip  Yosemite.

My favorite time to go there is September, the crowd drops off dramatically after Labor Day.

Logistics are that it would have to be late July/early August.  Wife is already out in Portland for a conference and the Kid starts college in mid August.  But I agree, not the best time and we might be better off skipping Yosemite.  I'd really like her to see it though.

Other option is to head north, there's a really nice lodge (St Orres) up in Gualala that we love and haven't been to in many years.  Might be a better choice.

Amazingly enough, she doesn't drink or smoke.  We've been very up front with her about it since she was very young and she just doesn't have any interest.  Same with her friends.  I assume this might change at some point but for the moment it's not an issue.

Okay, switch the question.

Lodging around Mendocino?

The valley gets brutally hot in the summer, you'll want to be in the high country by afternoon.

there's supposedly a real nice place there on the coast by the Big River....i dunno the name though.

We spent a couple nights at St Orres, a few nights at Little River Inn and camped at Van Damme.

It's our second favorite area of California to spend a week at.

We went last year in mid July. Rented a house about 45-60 minutes outside the park in a great little town called Groveland.  Nice market, couple of good restaurants and a great old saloon.  Drove in and out of the park each day.  Beautiful drive so it was OK.  To us it wasn't too crowded, lots of people sure, but we always liked to go in the afternoon.  Enjoy!

and remember, mama bears love it when you pet their cubs and give them beef jerky...

Simi Valley might be more your speed Thom.

"and remember, mama bears love it when you pet their cubs and give them beef jerky..."

Last time I was in the Valley was spring '77, hiked up to the top of Half Dome.  While camping at the base we met some folks and while talking to them at our camp site a mama bear and her two cubs invaded their site.  Their idea to get rid of them was to charge the bears while banging on pots and pans.  We quickly instructed them that this was just about the worst thing you could do to a mother bear with her cubs.

Take it somewhere else Tatters.  I was living the Bay Area before you were born.

Many thanks for those with advice.
