WTF? CD BABY site closes without notice to artists?

Forums:

Any other musicians on Viva hear about this or are affected? Damn, not even an e-mail to people who have their tunes up there. WTF?

Have to look into this a little more.

That's pretty weird they preemtively did that.  If your stuff isn't already there, you could always put it up on bandcamp.com.

I got my notice about 6 months ago, even though I kept getting automatic emails to send product up until a few weeks ago.

Damn, sorry to hear that.

I hope all works out well for you fabulous artists.

Dang Mylar, I just uploaded stuff a couple of months ago and had no inkling this was on the horizon. No one said, "Hey we're closing soon." And I had a song still up from years ago.

If you opted in to their outside distribution, your material should be on outlets such as youtube, itunes, etc.
You should be able to still do that through their services.
You can try calling them, let them know you weren't notified their music store was shutting down and ask them about what you can do with your music going forward.
I've found they've always been pretty above board and helpful.

Yeah, I'm hopeful. They have been good. Surprised I didn't hear about it with all the research I did on distribution options. Thanks.

They say to go to Bandcamp. CD Baby is focused on distribution. I asked what did I pay for in January when I bought the ability to release 5 tunes and he said you bought distribution, the retail store was a free added service. So no refund on my $50 once it's been distributed. Their thinking is replace their retail store with Bandcamp and everything is the same. Not quite, but nothing to be done about it. I guess Bandcamp is free but they take 15% off the top. Have to look into it more when I'm not working.  He claimed they started notification in mid-January but I didn't get any e-mails. He said it was on the support site. Guess I had to dig to find it. That's BS.

Bandcamp? Is that who they distribute hard media to now? 15% seems a little high.
Actually, I sold more of my CDs at live shows and direct mail order, cutting out the middle man.
Most of my music in mp3 format is already available for free all over the place. I get the penny or two for the plays. A little more, if people watch the ads.
I'm not making any more studio albums, even though I have enough original material for 2 or 3.
A lot of my newer music has only been recorded live and some of those recordings are in the air, so to speak.
People have to dig around the internet to find them. Makes it tough for Mylar fans, but while my following is small, they are appreciative and supportive, for which I am grateful.
Good luck with your future endeavors and post links where we can find your product. It's still OK to promote Zoner music here, right?
