With the amount of quality free streams available, one could argue no. However, what each of us is willing to give up for being enriched is a personal matter of tastes and wherewithal.
If you dig these guys, want to watch it, and paying 8 bucks won't bust you, then do it. It's a win/win for everyone. With the shutdown on mass gathering for live shows looking like it will go on for the forseeable future, paid live streams may be the only avenue for many artists to generate revenue and for fans to experience live music.
Dang, if Ned can spend $10 on a single holly bowling stream then I guess I can justify doing this.
appreciate both of u taking the time to weigh in.
SF Jazz gives u a full month of once a week archived streams from their vault Friday’s at 5pm pst for $5.
first month I was able to see Zakir and Dave Holland, a Jim lavino trio featuring Bill frisell and tyshawn sorey and the shorterless WSQ performance with kamasi Washington filling in.
next month isn’t looking nearly as good but I’ll b sure to renew in time to watch the still wayneless WSQ with herbie hancock filling in that was a part of that same run last year.
I didn't pay for the stream ...it was a tip I dropped in the over-sized Brandy snifter (virtual). The Unbroken Chain > Piper >Slipknot! > Franklins was exceptional.
He’ll b playing actual songs too, turtle, not tool queerness.
jamie Kime, formally of zpz, is no slouch either and while I’m not really familiar with the bassist, those late night talk show cats usually have chops to spare.
And Ned u big tipper, u!
oh, and spelling correction on my last post, *joe Lovano trio*
played some fusiony originals amongst mostly covers ranging from joe Henderson to Horace silver to early 70’s miles Davis to the doors and even a fairly interpretive cover of FZ’s ‘Eat that question’.
I guess in addition to working in some late night talk show bands and being a side man for such jazz greats as Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Clarke, Webb is quite the LA sessions man about town.
Apparently he’s played most of the Sax parts for Lisa on the simpsons, lol.
He played soprano, tenor and bari very tastefully with very pleasant tone.
I was most impressed by the kimmel bassist, jimmy earl, Guess he’s also worked with chick Corea.
Looked like he was using this Frankensteined vintage j bass with a bunch of customized added modern pickups, dude knew what he was doing.
carey was a little heavy handed for some of the softer jazz numbers but worked well on the more rockin Zappa and cobham flavored material.
seems like the baked potato might keep doing these paid streaming options even when they’re able to have audiences again, which would b great cause a lot of excellent progressive and fusion type one offs take place there such as this.
