The Fox opening segment is way to Game of Thrones for me, but they probably view the show as a blueprint for how things should work.

Japan seems to be the sleeper team to watch.

>>>The Fox opening segment is way to Game of Thrones for me<<<

I only watch the games on Telemundo. I don't understand a lick of Spanish, but I don't need commentary to understand what's happening in a soccer game and the announcers still always name who's touching the ball, often more than the blathering English announcers do, and that's all I really need.

Spanish is such a beautiful, flowing, dramatic language and the announcers are totally locked in with the game so it's like a perfect musical soundtrack, and it's also a hoot to hear them pronounce the players names with Spanish inflections and tounge trills... "RRRRRICHAAARDS!" "SMEEEEETH!"

And then of course there's Andrés Cantor and his legendary GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!

That call captures the emotion and gravitas of a World Cup goal perfectly and is absolutely amazing every time, and he's just brilliant overall. IMO, even though I don't understand a thing he says I think he could be the greatest sports announcer of all time.

As for the games, I don't know who's good and who isn't so I just assume the usual suspects will be there at the end. USA looked good in their first match, and despite being the Evil Empire I am of course still rooting for us, and I always root for Brazil just because they play with such style and joy.

Otherwise, growing up in a soccer family and being a soccer fan it's nice to have games happening every day, but on an esthetic level I fucking HATE these "hydration breaks". When the hell did that start? Over 150 years soccer has been a no timeouts game, but now they need a break? Buncha' mary's.

I guess you slept through Spain's 0-0 tie with Cape Verde.

if you missed the actual opening ceremony in Mexico City the day before LA

"It's not a game it's our DNA"

quinn -- you are correct.  :(.
trying to find the France game right now.

The first of three goals from Messi yesterday was just perfect. One of the all time Goats.

I went to the Mariners/Orioles baseball game at T-Mobile last night, and got a chance to check out the set-up next door at Lumen Field on the way in.  They have the perimeter on lockdown with barriers that make TSA at the airport look like a picnic.  Will be a scene there for Juneteenth this Friday as the U.S. plays Türkiye at high noon.  Especially with the Red Sox in town to start a series at T-Mobile that night.

boring

Japan looked very fast in their game. Loving the instagram feeds of the Tartan Army taking over Boston.
Let's Go Croatia!

Going for a bike ride and stopping at a favorite watering hole to watch the USA-Australia game today.  It should be quite a rowdy crowd.

Apparently, the Australians thought they were playing Australian rules football, not soccer. That game was a brawl, but USA gutted it out.

So far our boys have actually looked pretty good, especially compared to how they traditionally look at the world class level. They seem to have better speed, ball handling and shooting skills than in the past. But then again, there are more teams in this tournament than in the past so the competition is a bit diluted, we'll see how they do when they face a real contender.

Still, it's fun to watch the Americans not look totally outclassed for a change, hopefully that will continue for a while.

Normally the World Cup is the one time the rest of the world can look down their noses and smirk at the USA and it's usually fun to be the underdog, but these days we are truly the Evil Empire around the world (and we really are) so we're definitely the main villain this year and the world will rejoice when we lose.

Also, the sad fact is that the further we go in the tournament the more Trump will shove himself and MAGA into everything, so for the greater good it's probably better if we lose sooner than later, which is a shame because it's damn fun to see Americans actually competing in a World Cup.

Fuckin' Trump.

Go USA?

How about Bostonians closing some of their bars and now not allowing drinking in the streets now that England is in town? I guess they still do not want any of the English Tea.

Slow American here, finally figuring out this is a fan tourney. The fans are the show, I'm really feeling a kinship to the Tartan Army, being a Browns fan, their team is garbage but the Army just loves their pile of garbage.

this is like going on tour for a month and a half for these folks. Really digging the instagrams from the events around the stadiums on game day.

Is this year a larger group than before, seems to be taking more time than I recall?

I'd play the whole bench today if I was coaching vs Turkiye, no need to put anyone at risk, let everyone rest up.

Some one offered me free tickets next week so that should be fun.

I'm having a lot fun watching these games!

STILL BORING

Yes larger than before but the consensus has been that it hasn't really diminished the level of the game. I've been really surprised at how good all the teams are USA included. The African teams have really progressed from where they were even 10 years ago. Pretty much everyone from all over the world play in an elite league now and you can really tell. I heard that on the Argentina team only the back up goalie plays in the Argentina league.

It has been a great tournament so far and the crowds have been amazing. This is the world the way it is, and for some reason Republicans are furious about that.

Agree that it's been fun

>>>>Argentina team only the back up goalie plays in the Argentina league

and the Saudi team aren't starters in the Saudi league

>I only watch the games on Telemundo.

Telemundo adds some excitement vs the boring English broadcast. The language makes the ordinary plays sound like 3-2 count in the bottom of the 9th in a tie game.

Viva La France

A friend just told me that if Spain loses today's game and Cabo Verde beats Saudi Arabia, Spain is out !

The nerve ! ;-)

Brazil moves on and there goes my sleeper team.

Viva le Paraguay

Viva La France!

Now it's getting interesting.

And damn, France looks amazing. Who's going to beat them?

I'm looking forward to the big game tomorrow at Vanilla Stadium. It will be fun to see how our boys do on the big stage. Are they up to the challenge?

We may be the Evil Empire, but it's OUR Evil Empire dammit, so...

GO USA!!!!!!

> We may be the Evil Empire, but it's OUR Evil Empire dammit, so...

Spoken like a true patriot!

The evil empire for sure. With that ridiculous red card I think we are playing against the refs and FIFA old guard. I doubt there is another team that everyone in the world wants to see lose more than USA. It's too bad because this is by far the best team we have ever put on the field. I can't believe Germany and Netherlands are out and US is still in and has a shot against Belgium even without Balogun.

One of the best days of soccer ever all three games were great.

>>>One of the best days of soccer ever all three games were great.

^this!^

Fuck these refs. Calls were terribly lopsided.

>>One of the best days of soccer ever all three games were great.

I went to the England game (free tix) and it was a doozy.   DR Congo missed a point blank shot that would have put them up 2-0 and their keeper was on fire.   By the time the fourth quarter rolled around (that's what we're calling it now) they were simply gassed.  It was unfortunate as they played a hell of a game to let it all slip by last second.

Trump's meddling in the Balogun red card decision is disturbing.  Everything he touches turns to shit.

^ Agreed

Saw some of France's win Saturday, not one more second of the tournament now that the Child Molesting/Statutory Rapist/War Pig/Cunt Grabber is involved.

homer simpson giving the middle finger while laying in the sand

> did you leave school after the 2nd grade?

Trump left school before 2nd grade actually. Early onset bone spurs.

Such bullshit! I'm pissed.

From a Google search....

FIFA’s core statutes strictly forbid any form of government or political interference in the affairs of member associations. Under Article 19 and Article 15 of the FIFA Statutes, national football federations must manage their affairs independently and without influence from third parties, including state governments. Violations can result in severe penalties, including the suspension of the member association from all international competitions. [1, 2, 3]

1. Independence of Member Associations

FIFA requires that all member associations maintain complete autonomy. If a government dissolves a national football federation's board, removes officials, or directly dictates its operations, it violates FIFA rules. [1]

2. The Penalty Process

If a government interferes, FIFA's governing bodies (such as the FIFA Council) typically issue a warning and demand that the interference cease. If the government refuses to back down, FIFA can impose an immediate suspension. While suspended, a national team is barred from playing in the World Cup and all other international matches, and local clubs cannot participate in continental tournaments. [1]

3. State Interference vs. The Host Country Agreement

When a nation hosts the World Cup, the government signs a Host Country Agreement. While this treaty requires the government to provide infrastructure, security, and visa cooperation, it explicitly mandates that the host government cannot influence sporting operations, refereeing, or tournament matches. [1]

High-Profile Precedent

FIFA's rules on political neutrality gained significant global attention during the World Cup. FIFA faced intense scrutiny after invoking Article 27 of its Disciplinary Code to suspend the mandatory one-match ban for United States striker Folarin Balogun. Critics and rival teams (such as the Belgian FA) argued that FIFA made an exception and yielded to political interference after U.S. President Donald Trump directly lobbied FIFA President Gianni Infantino to overturn the red-card suspension. [1, 2, 3, 4]

Horrible.  They should do the right thing and not play him.   Even if the call was bad, this is the sport and many players get bad calls everyday.   If the U.S. wins it will forforever be a stain on their success.

You all are giving FIFA too much credit on running an up and up organization.

The asshole has now given the men's team two ways to lose, unless they sit Balogun on their own. Why make it so hard to root for America?

Pretty good game last night in Mexico. England really earned that win.

The Red Card was bullshit and as I said earlier in the context of that game could easily be viewed as political. FIFA is allowed to do whatever they want see below. Trump is the biggest asshole in the world for inserting himself into this and has forever tarnished this World Cup as he does with everything he touches. No team in the world would sit one of their best players in protest of a controversial call that helped them and neither should the US.

I didn't see the game in question.  Could someone pls explain why the red card was a bad call?
The other ironic thing: Balogun wouldn't be on the team if it weren't for birthright citizenship, which Trump / Project 2025 has tried to abolish.
His effort was recently stopped by the Supreme Court. All the time and taxpayer $ that has been spent on advancing unconstitutional public policy is mind boggling.

Like everything connected to the USA these days, the entire thing is a bad look.

The red card was bad look because while it was a foul it wasn't a flagrant attempt to hurt an opponent outside the natural flow of the game.

Trump inserting himself into it and getting the card reversed is a bad look because the President should focus on things that matter and stay the hell out of sports, once again making the USA look like/once again exposing us to the world as the Evil Empire.

The Belgian reaction to the reversal is a bad look because they look like (are) a bunch of whiners who instead of throwing a tantrum about it should just be saying, "That's good. We want to to beat our opponent at their best, bring it on."

Because of all this, along with everything else that's been happening in the past 18 months I can't help but have mixed feelings about today's game. Like everyone, I love an underdog and the USA has always been the ultimate underdog in the World Cup, and because this is easily the best team we've ever had we have a chance to make real noise in this tournament, which is incredibly exciting to those who care.

But on the other hand, our country is basically an evil, corrupt, murdering shit stain on the world these days, and as Budd in Kill Bill 2 so eloquently said, "She deserves her revenge, and we deserve to die."

As much as I'd love to see us win today, I'm not sure we deserve to win.

Sigh.

The red card was a bad call because the way the ref was calling the game up until that point which was a complete free for all. No cards at all had been issued up to that point. There is nothing wrong with calling a game that way and allowing physical play to go unchallenged, but then to reverse it when US was up 1 - 0 was inserting himself into the outcome of the game because the US had to play the rest of the game with one less player. US won anyway and even scored a second goal one person down, but it could have easily gone the other way.

The ref also used video review and watched the play in slow motion which they are not supposed to do to determine if there is a red card. Finally the play was just two players getting tangled - almost all calls in soccer are debatable but it was barely a foul that warranted a red and absolutely did not warrant a red the way he had called the game up to that moment. That said a red card means you are suspended for the next game and can't play. There is no way in hell FIFA should have overturned the next game suspension, but they do have the right to overturn the suspension.

FIFA is the most corrupt sports organization in the world. Under Biden the DOJ was investigating FIFA for corruption. Trump of course killed that investigation when he took over so of course FIFA will do Trumps bidding.

I grew up watching the Soviet Union corruptly inserting themselves into sports. The 72 Olympics basketball game when they added time to the clock for no reason at the end of the game so that Russia could win was the one of the worst examples. The US is now Russia.

Not just that ^ but if team USA win, tRump will take credit, and if they go all the way he will insert himself in the award presentation and force the players to kiss his ring.

FIFA is incredibly corrupt so it's a perfect fit. Sucks for the athletes. And the fans of the sport

Thanks for the clear explanations everyone!  Now I'm caught up.

On my way to Tomorrow's Verse (Portland's only Phish pub!) to watch the rest of the game now.

It seems that our dictator has ruined yet another large event for the US.  Everything he touches, crumbles.

Stayed home as a phone call delayed me -- just saw the 4-1 score.  Congrats Belgium!
Belgium is a great place to practice and understand French as they speak it more slowly than Parisians.

Trump's on the phone to FIFA demanding a Mulligan?

^^^ LOL

Wow game 3 of the Knicks, Fourth of July and the 250 anniversary and now this. He is a wrecking ball

Everything dump touches turns to shit. Hence, dump.

It's as if dump gave the US team bad KARMA!!!

Hope this link works (paused my NYT subscription)... but have always enjoyed NYT sportswriting

Vive La France

Spain vs France, July 14!   Bastille Day!

I think Tommy's boys are going to win this, but hoping for the big Viking takes it from them.

I'm just here for England playing Norway in Miami in July.

AI Summary >

The Champion's Curse

There is an eerie pattern regarding the teams that end up knocking Japan out. Historically, the team that eliminates Japan from the tournament goes on to lose to the eventual World Cup winner.

2002: Turkey beat Japan, but lost to eventual champion Brazil in the semi-finals.

2010: Paraguay beat Japan, but later fell to eventual champion Spain.

2018: Belgium beat Japan, but lost to eventual champion France.

2022: Croatia beat Japan, but fell to eventual champion Argentina in the semi-finals.

2026: Brazil beat Japan in the Round of 32, but was subsequently defeated by Norway.

as much as England deserves to advance would love to see Norway go all the way

I loved that Magnus Carlson was in attendance supporting Norway.

Well that kind of sucked. England’s goal off the wire and the Swiss getting a red card for something that has happened 10,000 times so far in the tournament. If you had to stack rank the sports organizations that are most likely to be corrupt you would have to put FIFA second on the list behind wrestling.

tough red card; swiss were a nice surprise
