This was an amazing documentary. As with all docs it comes with a point of view but the crowd shots when Korn, and Limp Bizkit where playing are just insane. John Scher comes of as the worst ass hole event producer ever and that includes the Frye Fest guys. What an absolute complete shit show from beginning to end. This is one time you were better off if you didn't go to the show, but of course there are plenty of people over on Reddit saying they had a good time, and there were plenty of people there on Sunday night for the Red Hot's final song Hendrix's Fire that was played while they were actually burning shit down.
I have to wonder what the cross tab of young guys who went to Woodstock 99 and who voted for Trump. I'm guessing it is pretty high. If you are looking for the catalyst that switched things to the pretty endless crap millennium that kicked in the next year this might be it.
A friend bought the pay per view & I watched Saturday for Planet Drum, who played after Alanis Morissette. I said during the Fred Durst ride on the plywood that his manager must be having a heart attack watching his cash machine risk serious injury. Seeing the Chili Peppers set live was surreal.
Sweet- I think I'm gonna check this out for a bit now before bed... pretty baked and my daughter is sleeping.
I was 12 when this went down and we were able to watch it at our house... my parents had one of those "black box" device type things where we had free cable and other channels and I'm not sure if we were watching it through that or if we did order it. I saw a bunch of tits that weekend which was cool for a 12 year old to take in... I really loved Limp Bizkit and KoRn at the time.. I even had a red NY Yankees hat which was kinda sacrilegious in our house of Red Sox fans.
I went with a couple friends to WS99. We had a blast and a different experience that what I have seen on a few documentary type shows. I will check this one our for sure. We bought the VIP and stayed in the same hotel as the bands. They bussed us back and forth from Rome to Syracuse. I recall sleeping like 15-20 hours in 5 days. It was a lot of fun from my perspective. I remember seeing the beginning of the fires as we walked to the bus area after the Chili Peppers played. Megadeth was playing on the other stage as we walked out. I wanted to check out their set but I was beyond tired and ready to sleep. When I woke up in the hotel and turned on the morning news the whole place was covered in smoke and burned out trailers. Glad I left when I did. This was one of the 3 largest concerts I have attended. Jazzfest and Tibetan Freedom Concert in Golden Gate Park are the others.
I will have to check this doc our for sure. I managed to save a couple of pieces of memorabilia. For some reason the Thursday line up of emerging artists was not listed.
I saw Oleander, moe, Live, Lit, Buckcherry, part of the Roots, the Offspring, Korn, part of Bush, most of P-Funk. Kid Rock, Wyclef, Bruce Hornsby, Everclear, Collective Soul, part of DMB, Los Lobos, Mickey Hart band, Limp Bizkit, Rage and Metallica. Got in late on Sunday and saw Mike Ness, Our Lady Peace, Rusted Root, Everlast, Sevendust, Jewel, Godsmack the end of Creed (Robby Krieger was with them), and RHCP. Ice Cube was on my list but was moved to Saturday and this was pre smart phone, I had no idea until Sunday morning eating breakfast in the hotel and Ice Cube and his crew were at the hotel restaurant at the table next to me and my friends. He was pretty cool and talked to me for a couple of minutes.
Overall, I had a great time and a very memorable weekend for me. I still think about it every July.
as I think more about this, the back stage access made this worth it. The catering tent was awesome, there was a chef and all kinds of food for the taking. I would grab a bite and load up my backpack with waters and head back out. I remember watching Limp, Rage and Metallica and handing out water bottles to my neighbors in the scorching heat. I saw more bands in the hotel than backstage. I am terrible at spotting recognizable faces in a crowd.
^ Nice.. I would've loved to see Limp, Korn, Metallica, Megadeath, etc. In the documentary I kept getting the idea that most interviewed for the film were totally clueless on the metal scene. The promoter said something along the effect of "the vibe in the crowd was distinctively different than anything I'd ever experienced before". If you were used to promoting and attending hippie rock band festivals and were surprised with the fans who showed up for these bands, I get it... they all just came off pretty ignorant towards aggressive music and dancing though. The molestation, throwing trash at performers, destroying property, burning stuff- all fucked up no doubt. Zero room for any of that behavior in a healthy show environment. I grew up attending metal shows and went to about a hundred shows before seeing my first jamband and getting into that scene. There is a brotherhood of man in the metal community, it's just expressed differently. It just seemed like the doc threw a lot of the blame on the performers when they were doing their jobs and playing the material that was expected of them. I'll put Fred Durst aside- he definitely came off like a dink encouraging the crowd surfing on boards and stuff but at the same time, he's caught up in the moment, playing the music that got them there to begin with. Their single "Break Shit"... did you not expect them to play the popular song?
Also, how bad must that SUCK to be passing plywood boards over your head, presumably with nails/screws sticking out of them. Ouch.
i was there - working on the East Stage as a Production staging supervisor where all the mayhem went down. I havent watched it yet but i can tell you first hand it was a gigantic shit show. The ply wood they mention was peeled off the front of house Mixing tower that housed the lighting and audio desks and spot lights above - the kids were over running that and we were taking on all kinds of projectiles. During Limp Biscuit and Rage Against the Machine the show nearly stopped twice...we had to fold down the siding on the roofs to keep the projectiles out. I saw young teens taking full water bottles in the head as well as rocks and all kinds of debris.
There was so much pressure against the barricades from the kids that they were getting suffocated up front. After Korn's ' performance ' we had to clear the stage of at least 3 @ 55 gallon trash cans of crap, shoes, rocks, bottles, even a norelco 3 headed shaver. Over at the MTV stage we had to devise a screen that would block all the shit that the kids threw at them, we got 100' of baseball cage netting @ 20' tall and strung it up on lines that they could pull up incase of incoming.
we had kids jiumpng the barricades and try to scramble up the stage towers and at a certain point were told we could ' do what ever you need to stop them ' - well, some of our hands were 1%'s and lets just say that those kids that these guys caught will probably never want to try that again.
a gigantic fucking shit show and the likes of John Scher and Michael Lang didnt give a single fuck about anything except profits; optics, fires, assaults, rapes, OD's be damned.
DUDE - it was so out of place with the litany of detritus that rained down on those shit heads that i am still able to visualize it on the stage right now...' im standing there helping clear the debris and look at it amongst the rocks and crap and thinking, what in the ever living fuck and why did this asshole BRING it all the way from his tent ? '
