Woodstock 50 Cancelled

Forums:

If that jubilee don't come...

At least they had the decency and common sense to announce the festival has been canceled before people showed up for it:

"It’s a dream for agencies to work with iconic brands and to be associated with meaningful movements. We have a strong history of producing experiences that bring people together around common interests and causes which is why we chose to be a part of the Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival.  But despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don’t believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees."

Good.  Shameless cash grab.

I guess everyone will be going to Arrowhead Ranch instead.

>>>...an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name

barf

What about the second one.   There were two festivals.

There were actually 3. 1994 (the one Dylan played) in Saugerties and 1999 (the burning and looting one) in Rome.

my bad, looks like you meant there was supposed to be two festivals this year

Well, there's always the Altamont Speedway Brand...

450 a pop was not and is not What it's about..sad, but Glad...

Duh.

Watkins locals hate music festivals.

Phish fans knew this is hownit would shake out the minute itnwas announced.

it blows my mind they still have the balls to put this festival on in a small mountian town after woodstock 94 when 500,000 people showed up...the original festival, with attendance almost as high as 94, was an amazing cultural and musical landmark, and should have been a once in a lifetime piece of history, i dont get why people feel the need to commemorate it by putting local residents through that kind of thing again.

500,000 people showed up in 94...according to wikipedia there are over 50 countries that have a population less than that, including iceland, greenland, the bahamas, beleize, barbados and guam...think about that...a group of people bigger than many small countries descended on a town with a population under 5000. they shut down the highways. even the intended 100,000 tickets they were intending to sell for the 50th is an incredible amount of people. i cant even imagine what it would be like for an average resident to try and go to town for groceries or commute to work especially on the days people are coming and going from the festival.

turns out they didn’t have the balls, Dr. Longballs

Is it on again?

NEW YORK (AP) - Woodstock 50 will go on despite the loss of a major financial partner, according to the organizers of the beleaguered anniversary event.

In a statement released late Monday, Woodstock 50 co-founder Michael Lang and Woodstock LLC said that they were "committed to ensuring that the 50th anniversary of Woodstock is marked with a festival deserving of its iconic name and place in American history and culture."

They said that would continue despite the announcement earlier in the day that a financial investor was dropping out of the event, scheduled for Aug 16-18 in Watkins Glen, New York.

"Although our financial partner is withdrawing, we will of course be continuing with the planning of the festival and intend to bring on new partners," the statement read. "The bottom line is, there is going to be a Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival, as there must be, and it's going to be a blast."

The anniversary event has had some bumps in the road. Tickets were originally supposed to go on sale last week, but that was put on hold. And some of the performers leaked to the press ahead of its announcement.

But the biggest obstacle came on Monday when its major investor pulled out.

"Despite our tremendous investment of time, effort and commitment, we don't believe the production of the festival can be executed as an event worthy of the Woodstock Brand name while also ensuring the health and safety of the artists, partners and attendees," Dentsu Aegis Network's Amplifi Live said in a statement.

That led many to assume that the event would be canceled. Jay-Z, Dead & Company and the Killers were announced as headliners at the concert series, to take place about 115 miles (185 kilometers) northwest of the original site. The event is separate from an anniversary concert planned at the site of the original festival in 1969.

More than 80 artists, including John Fogerty, Miley Cyrus, Santana, Imagine Dragons, Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters, the Black Keys, Chance the Rapper and Janelle Monae, are expected to perform on three main stages at Watkins Glen International racetrack in the Finger Lakes for Woodstock 50.

Lang is going to try and recoup what was paid to the bands.  Note to vendors/employees etc -- count your losses and forget about it.

I highly doubt that they can secure the permits to throw the lights on but if they do it'll be a complete loss for everyone involved.

Local news says the problem was with the permits and they were only going well 75,000 tix for 450,000 a pop. No single day passes, I was concerned cause I heading thru Watkins up to cmac on the 15th for hall and oates. They are having trouble convincing the locals they would have the facilities to handle the crush. Last year the boil water order put the cabash on the phish show. Hard to put on a big fun time while half the county was flooded out, flip climate change. I guess clean water not a big concern when NASCAR in town all they swill is Busch and Coors light.

Things happen once. Let it go.

Trying to recreate that which cannot be recreated.

BIt of theme for everything the past few decades.

Woodstock 50 Promoter Michael Lang Denies Festival Cancellation
The saga of Woodstock 50 Festival continues today with promoter Michael Lang denying the reported cancellation of the Aug. 16-18 event, and explicitly stating “there is going to be a Woodstock 50th Anniversary Festival, as there must be, and it’s going to be a blast!”

As there must be! Seriously?

They're just hyping it up.

What could possibly go wrong?

He still wants to make more money from the main thing he's ever done in his life. I was thinking maybe he needs the money to send his boys to college, but google says he already has (what I consider to be) a decent collection of money, enough for tuition certainly. So it's probably about his self image or whatever.

He will probably end up having to let it go, but I can see why he wouldn't be ready to concede just yet. I think he should have tried to do it at Bethel. With a better lineup. (Duh!)
