stop it

Dilbert said it best:  "Intelligence has far less practical application than most people realize"

From the article linked in the OP:

A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?

Would someone please explain to me how the answer is 5¢, not 10?

Thank you.

$0.05 for the ball

The bat is a dollar more...

$0.05 + $1.00 = 1.05

1.05 + 0.05 = 1.10

If the ball was 10 c and the bat was a dollar more, it would be $1.10, making the total $1.20

$1.10 + .10= $1.20

$1.05+ .05= $1.10

Somehow I still don't get it. I see the way you're writing it out might make sense, but... I remember having trouble with this sort of question/answer on PZ and people patiently tried to help me see it.

Could you rewrite the question (not the answer) in some way that might make sense to someone like me? I'm very literal. I used to be a math teacher, but that was 50 years ago. Literally.

Maybe I just got it! but it still seems that 5 and 10¢ could both be right.

Might explain why every smart person I grew up with and respected sent me the microsoft lawsuit email hoax.

I bet some zoners forwarded that email.

The total cost of a bat and ball together is $1.10.

The cost of the bat is equal to the cost of the ball, plus $1.00.

What must the ball cost?

Or...

You've made it this far in life without getting these stupid logic word problems, so why start now?

Just Google it

I think i got if, if the ball is 5 cents they are adding the next 5 cents as equivalent subtracting the five cents from the remainder, which means five cents is correct.

Let:
Bat = x
Ball = y

From the question, we know:
x + y = 110
y + 100 = x

Substituting, we get:
(y + 100) + y = 110

Or 2y + 100 = 110

2y = 10

y = 05
