The Proud Boys for years have helped organize street fights in Portland, Oregon ― gatherings thinly veiled as political freedom rallies in order to secure permits or police escorts from the city.
This week, that veil was lifted, as the group’s leader admitted the ugly and obvious truth: The events are staged with the intention of spurring fights, wasting city resources and winning a game of optics against their anti-fascist nemeses.
“We’ve wasted all their fucking resources to make this rally,” Proud Boys leader Enrique Tarrio said in video captured during the latest extremist rally held Saturday in Portland. “We want them to waste $2 million and we’ll do it again in two months.”
Tarrio and fellow Proud Boys leader Joe Biggs flew to Portland from Florida to host the rally, and fears among city officials about the potential chaos caused them to warn local businesses to close for the day. Meanwhile, a multi-jurisdictional police force of 700 was deployed, according to The Oregonian.
The closures cost local restaurants and other businesses an estimated $3 million in revenue, and taxpayers will likely be on the hook for millions more due to the police response, the paper reported.

In a general sense, this is precisely the sort of danger that arises when a platform with a large blanket of cover is provided by those who reside more in the "center" (if such a thing can even be). IOW, core Trump supporters might truly believe they're furthering a genuine political cause, but in reality there are likely countless fringe groups and individuals seeking to associate peripherally with any "movement" they can latch on to as a springboard to inject violence to serve as a catalyst for other extremist goals they might seek to attain.

In all fairness, there is one school of thought here in town that the Proud Boys and the others are just trying to get a reaction, and if you ignore them, they will eventually go away. In fact, after the Max train stabbings a few years ago there were a number of visits by the Proud Boys that understandably got people really upset and up in arms. Jesse Jackson came to town and advised against going down and protesting them. He reasoned that if you protested them, it gives them attention they did not deserve and would not get otherwise.
I considered Jackson's advice, but erred on the side of going down and making it clear the Proud Boys and their ilk weren't welcome in this town.
