Worth a read (reality, it appears, is like like a spy novel - hedge fund billionaires, military-industrial complex, data mining......):
"There are three strands to this story.
How the foundations of an authoritarian surveillance state are being laid in the US.
How British democracy was subverted through a covert, far-reaching plan of coordination enabled by a US billionaire.
And how we are in the midst of a massive land grab for power by billionaires via our data. Data which is being silently amassed, harvested and stored."

"Cambridge Analytica.....He called the company a central point in the right’s “propaganda machine”, a line I quoted in reference to its work for the Trump election campaign and the referendum Leave campaign. That led to the second article featuring Cambridge Analytica – as a central node in the alternative news and information network that I believed Robert Mercer and Steve Bannon, the key Trump aide who is now his chief strategist, were creating. I found evidence suggesting they were on a strategic mission to smash the mainstream media and replace it with one comprising alternative facts, fake history and rightwing propaganda."

"This is not just a story
"This is not just a story about social psychology and data analytics. It has to be understood in terms of a military contractor using military strategies on a civilian population. Us. David Miller, a professor of sociology at Bath University and an authority in psyops and propaganda, says it is “an extraordinary scandal that this should be anywhere near a democracy. It should be clear to voters where information is coming from, and if it’s not transparent or open where it’s coming from, it raises the question of whether we are actually living in a democracy or not.”
Paul and David, another ex-Cambridge Analytica employee, were working at the firm when it introduced mass data-harvesting to its psychological warfare techniques. “It brought psychology, propaganda and technology together in this powerful new way,” David tells me."

"This is military-funded technology that has been harnessed by a global plutocracy and is being used to sway elections in ways that people can’t even see, don’t even realise is happening to them,” she says. “It’s about exploiting existing phenomenon like nationalism and then using it to manipulate people at the margins. To have so much data in the hands of a bunch of international plutocrats to do with it what they will is absolutely chilling.
“We are in an information war and billionaires are buying up these companies, which are then employed to go to work in the heart of government. That’s a very worrying situation.”

Hillary lost because she's Hillary. It really isn't any more complicated than that. If Joe Biden had run he'd be President now (assuming that the DNC wouldn't have rigged the results against him like they did with Bernie). But of course the left's certainty of the stupidity of the average human (especially ones that don't think "the right way") as well as their conceit that if they lose there must be some nefarious plot to explain it always has to find an outlet.
And I'd say that the Obama administrations use of our intelligence services to try and destroy a duly elected President is pretty much the definition of "anti-American".

So what I read in that
So what I read in that article is a lot of descriptions of how data was collected but not one example of how it supposedly was used to alter the election other than a brief reference to Facebook ads. Not one concrete example. The insinuation is that all of this data was collected in order to target people to make them think better of Trump, but I don't see one actual example of how that was actually done. What I see are theories that since this guy was bullied as a kid that he must have been uniquely vulnerable to to these right wing bullies as well.
Which brings up the much larger issue; is it really believable that the election was swayed but Facebook ads? This is ridiculous. Trump was all over every network 24/7 for 18 months (a decision that many of the networks probably now regret), he couldn't send a tweet without it being broadcast everywhere, outrage after outrage ad nauseam, and you folks decide to believe that Facebook ads were the culprit? This is desperation searching for an answer at best.
Big data is here to stay and it's use in all sorts of areas is only going to continue, for good and for ill. The idea that it won't be used to affect elections is naive in the extreme. Obama was doing this to the capability they had at the time, they regularly bragged about their expertise in using social media, but since you liked him you didn't see it as a problem.
Madison believed a fully informed electorate was necessary for a well-functioning democracy. If you're using Facebook to get your information you are pretty much by definition not even close to being fully informed. And you're also not the reason that Hillary lost.

So what do we learn in the NY
So what do we learn in the NY Times today?
Not much.
The most interesting piece of information is that "Mr. Wylie" had connections to the Obama political machine, which makes it sensible to assume that he had no problem using this technology as long as it was being employed by those whose views he was in favor of. It was only after he became disenchanted "with working on behalf of the hard-right candidates" that his conscious seems to have kicked in. (BTW, are there ever any "hard left candidates" in the Times' world?).
Again, not one specific instance as to how this technology was actually employed by the Trump campaign to tilt the election. In fact, there are multiple claims that "Cambridge did not have enough time to comprehensively model Trump voters". The main claim appears to be that the data was gathered in a questionable method. That may be (and it may not), but it hardly shows how the data was employed in any manner to affect the outcome of the election.
Desperation searching for an answer. Occam's Razor people. The Democrats ran a terrible candidate and paid the price. Like I said; if Joe Biden had run he'd be President today. And don't think he doesn't know it.

Facebook says it has
Facebook says it has suspended the account of Cambridge Analytica, the data analysis firm hired by Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, amid reports it harvested the profile information of millions of US voters without their permission.
According to the New York Times and Britain's Observer, the company stole information from 50 million Facebook users' profiles in the tech giant's biggest-ever data breach, to help them design software to predict and influence voters' choices at the ballot box.
Also suspended were the accounts of its parent organization, Strategic Communication Laboratories, as well as those of University of Cambridge psychologist Aleksandr Kogan and Christopher Wylie, a Canadian data analytics expert who worked with Kogan.
Cambridge Analytica was bankrolled to the tune of $15 million by US hedge fund billionaire Robert Mercer, a major Republican donor. The Observer said it was headed at the time by Steve Bannon, a top Trump adviser until he was fired last summer.
"In 2015, we learned that ... Kogan lied to us and violated our Platform Policies by passing data from an app that was using Facebook Login to SCL/Cambridge Analytica, a firm that does political, government and military work around the globe," Facebook said in a posting late Friday by its vice president and deputy general counsel Paul Grewal.
Kogan also improperly shared the data with Wylie, it said.
Kogan's app, thisisyourdigitallife, offered a personality prediction test, describing itself on Facebook as "a research app used by psychologists."
Some 270,000 people downloaded the app, allowing Kogan to access information such as the city listed on their profile, or content they had "liked."
"However, the app also collected the information of the test-takers' Facebook friends, leading to the accumulation of a data pool tens of millions-strong," the Observer reported.
Facebook later pushed back against the claim of a data breach, issuing a fresh statement on Saturday that suggested the misused data was limited to those who voluntarily took the test.
"People knowingly provided their information, no systems were infiltrated, and no passwords or sensitive pieces of information were stolen or hacked," Grewal said.
Cambridge Analytica meanwhile said it was in touch with Facebook "in order to resolve this matter as quickly as possible."
It blamed the misuse of data on Kogan and said it has since deleted all the data it received from a company he founded, Global Science Research (GSR).
"No data from GSR was used by Cambridge Analytica as part of the services it provided to the Donald Trump 2016 presidential campaign," it said.
- 'Targeting their inner demons' -
But Wylie, who later became a whistleblower, told the Observer: "We exploited Facebook to harvest millions of people's profiles. And built models to exploit what we knew about them and target their inner demons. That was the basis that the entire company was built on."
Kogan legitimately obtained the information but "violated platform policies" by passing information to SCL/Cambridge Analytica and Wylie, according to Facebook.
Facebook said it removed the app in 2015 when it learned of the violation, and was told by Kogan and everyone who received the data that it had since been destroyed.
"Several days ago, we received reports that, contrary to the certifications we were given, not all data was deleted," Grewal wrote.
"We are moving aggressively to determine the accuracy of these claims. If true, this is another unacceptable violation of trust and the commitments they made.
"We are suspending SCL/Cambridge Analytica, Wylie and Kogan from Facebook, pending further information."

The Cambridge Analytics story is a nothing burger with regard to politics. It is a story with regard to Facebook users. Ex-Obama Campaign Director Drops Bombshell Claim on Facebook: 'They Were on Our Side'
A former Obama campaign official is claiming that Facebook knowingly allowed them to mine massive amounts of Facebook data — more than they would’ve allowed someone else to do — because they were supportive of the campaign.
In a Sunday tweet thread, Carol Davidson, former director of integration and media analytics for Obama for America, said the 2012 campaign led Facebook to “suck out the whole social graph” and target potential voters. They would then use that data to do things like append their email lists.
“They came to office in the days following election recruiting & were very candid that they allowed us to do things they wouldn’t have allowed someone else to do because they were on our side,” Davidson tweeted.

It's interesting that no matter what the left accuses Trump of doing always ends up being something that Obama actually did.

This is the only way change
This is the only way change will happen:
Shares of Facebook skidded 6.8%, their biggest one-day percentage decline since March 26, 2014, when it tumbled 6.9%, as the social-media giant has ignited a firestorm over third-parties’ access to Facebook users’ personal data.
I deactivated my account today. Let's see how long I can last.

US Population - 325 million
US Population - 325 million US Facebook users - 215 million or 66% of US population
Cambridge Analytical captured info on 50 million of these accounts
or 23% of FB users or 15% of the US population. Not insignificant numbers

The plan now seems quite
The plan now seems quite clear. Between Cambridge Analytica micro targeting 50 million people down to the precinct level. Bots spreading fake news. Russia targeting State Voter Registration Databases. They may have won this Election before the first vote was cast.
With the level of fine grain detail that Cambridge Analytica had on our voters down to the precinct level it would not surprise me if they were sharing their information with Russia while they were targeting our Voter Registration Databases.
