Who's Been To Radio City ?

Who's been to Radio City for their Christmas Spectacular show with the Rockettes ?  Went with the fam a few times over the years. A most impressive thing from the 3-D stuff to the finale just fantastic. Too bad they had to cancel the rest of this year's, every kid should see it, but this covid shit is spreading faster than a buzz at a show. One year we had seats next to the organ, that was great, that thing is beautiful with numerous levels of keyboards, pedals and knobs. One had to be a nuclear physicist to figure out how to play it. And the sound. A wonderful event

Last time I was there was 1980 to see this band that played an acoustic set and two electric sets. It was cool and nobody got Covid.

I've been several times.. always fantastic!! The last time I drove home in an ice storm 20mph on the palisades the whole way .. crazy found a line of cars in the right lane with flashers on and stuck with it.. saw a lot of spun out idiots though

The last time i was there for that was in 1973.........

Train in Vain

Attended many times in early - mid 1970's with parents and Grandma for Xmas and Easter spectaculars,  also to catch a movie + Rockettes / Organ show. We lived in Nearby Jersey City back then,  and a ten-cent P.A.T.H. train was a quick ride to Manhattan.

I think the matinee was the inexpensive deal,  maybe 3 - 5 bucks back then. Saw "Herbie The Love Bug",  "1776",  some Tom Sawyer flick...  Great place to see a Movie with the Huge Screen and comfy chairs.

Didn't get to attend any of the 1980 GD shows;  they sold out pretty quick and the weekday ones I was not allowed,  because School the next day.

Seen the show many times with family and visiting family.

1964. I was 10.

Couple of Xmas shows as a kid.  One GD '80.  Dire Straits.  Lou Reed, I think.  Can't imagine it was anywhere else in midtown. Don't think it was Carnegie.

Lake Street Dive a while back.  Might have lost a show or two in the fog.

Parents took me to see The Rockettes in the mid 780s, and then 3 Grateful Dead shows in 1980. Been there, done that!

Last time i was at Radio City was in 1989 for Jefferson Airplane!

We went as a family when I was about 12, late 60's. The show was great but I was more amazed at the neon sign outside, and the incredible lobby. It felt like you were in a palace, and in a way you were. I remember the backs of seats had small ashtrays built in every 3rd or 4th seat, I guess because it was carpeted and they didn't want you to burn the place down. Also little spring clips on the backs of the seats that men would hang their hats on during the performance. And the giant organ that slid out from behind the curtain. The entire orchestra pit would rise from the front and move to the back of the stage if I remember correctly. The elevators to the balcony were manually controlled by an elevator operator, with a handle he would move up or down to take you one of the three balconies.

Years later caught all but 1 of The Dead shows, that one night we opted for Zappa at the Palladium (or was it The Beacon?) Frank had a cold and stopped the show early, he said if we wanted to see a long show, we could go see The Grateful Dead. We still can't believe he actually said that. Thanks Frank!

Took my wife and son to The Christmas Show, about 10 years ago, this time I remember the show as being the stand-out. Pretty cool stuff, an actual ice rink on stage for part of the show. How do they do that?

Also caught The Pretenders, Dire Straights, Primus, Neil Young w/Crazy Horse for his 3rd swing through New York for the Greendale tour. And Brit Floyd. Maybe 1 or 2 more.

To this day, the place still amazes me. The acoustics are some of the best, when theaters were designed to sound really good, naturally. The art deco style is from an age when craftsmanship and design meant something. I always get a certain rush whenever I walk into that lobby.

Also saw the Mandela Day Concert in 2009. Was great but the audience was lame.

Went there a bunch as a kid. I used to ask my parents to go to the bathroom and wander everywhere I could by myself. That love of theaters came through at concerts later as I hardly stay in my seat and always "look" at the venue.

For one of the Furthur  (2012?) shows there, our seats weren't that great. Upper balcony against the side wall. After a bit I noticed some of the hall's plaster/stucco had aged and was crumbling. I peeled off a small pocket sized rock from the wall. It rides in my car to this day...

Oh, And. The really "good" seats are some of the "best" seats of any theater

One visit only to RCMH to see Phish in 2000.  Remember the place was impeccable and way too nice to be hosting a Phish two-pack.  Had great seats!!!  Loved it and would do it again!

^ The bathrooms were impeccable.

Bought Day of show tix that just opened up directly behind orchestra pit for KC

Will never forget that night

Love RCMH but it's pretty vast. If you're too far out on the wings in  the back, it's less than a stellar concert experience.

One of the most beautiful lobbies in America theater. That's for sure.

Would love to see it someday.  Enjoying all your memories and observations.

My family moved from New York to Virginia when I was 8, and they didn't take me there.  I do remember going to the Lincoln Center to see The Nutcracker one year at Christmastime, though, and thought it was pretty magical with everyone in formal wear and the grand lobbies and crystal chandeliers.

Same is true close up, unless you're a fan of that Stacks Blowing Your Head Off experience.  Was 3rd row near an aisle, and the entire band was still off to my right.
