Where Y'all Catching the Eclipse?

Forums:

I live 50 miles from Hopkinsville, KY, the town "that will be getting the longest total eclipse."

http://wtop.com/science/2017/06/in-rural-kentucky-solar-eclipse-preparat...

I wouldn't mind being at the Kimock show in OR, but instead I'll be in Hopkinsville Sat and Sun at the little Green Man Festival.

Some drunk locals saw a spaceship land in their field back in the 50s or 60s, so now there's a festival. A Journey cover band headlined last year.

I'm thinking of catching the eclipse in the woods at Land Between the Lakes. I'd like to be in the weirdest location accessible to me, but I'm not sure which fits that description best: the festival or the forest.

Going to play at a farm that's right under the center Sunday night, have stage / PA, even a taco truck, lol...   near Independence Oregon.  Wake and bake to the eclipse Monday Morning...   hope those pesky marine clouds stay away!

In the heart of it (:

Family trip to NC

I will be in Louisville, KY :)

Hope it's not cloudy.

I think it would be bizarre to be on a plane during the event.

On the River just north and west of Bend, OR.

My front yard near Philomath Oregon. Besides ourselves, there will be anywhere from zero to 100* other folks watching it with us.

* - number of people who said "they might show up".

Lincoln County on the coast is the nearest location, but it will be packed and there is always a chance that it will cloudy, which would suck.

So instead, heading out to central Oregon.  Haven't picked a spot yet, but I image it will be on some BLM land between Redmond and Prineville as camping is free and with so much of it, can probably avoid the crowds that are flocking to that neck of the woods.

We will be moving back to Reno somewhere right in that time frame so probably will be too busy to get up north but if the timing is right, we would love to be somewhere in eastern or central OR to catch the show.

My living room

For those of you planning on viewing in Oregon be sure to avoid this

They are looking at 50,000 attendance

I think "Catching the Eclipse" was like the last Bob Marley album that was posthumously released :toke:

Sounds more like a Ryan Adams song.

>>>be sure to avoid this

Ha!  I saw that and thought about going for second, but then said "Do I really want to watch the astronomical event of the decade surrounded by 50,000 of my closest friends after spending days listening to non-stop EDM music?"

Probably be right here in Jerseyland.  What date / time ??

All I know for certain is:  if I hang laundry out on the clothesline,  it will rain and/or be overcast.  Maybe a Tornado or Rains of Frogs.

This is why I have an Honorary Doctorate from U. of Myanmar,  rainiest place near Burma.  "Disco Stu == Certified Weather Witch"

It has nice Calligraphy in Burmese Crayon,  on a pH-neutral cardboard archival stock.

Monday

Will the parks be open in Jersey that day?

Yeah I have a bunch of friends going to the Oregon eclipse. I don't mind the EDM, but I'm too old to go to a 50,000 person event at a site where they have never had an event before. What could go wrong?

"...an event before. What could go wrong?.."

I could show up and string a rope between a couple Trees,  and hang a wet T-shirt or two.  That would put heavy odds on a Tsunami 300 miles inland the other side of the Cascade Range.

This is why I've started a 501-3C foundation to keep me away from your Favorite Eclipse event.

Details to follow  laugh

Wow nobody is going to bark @ the moon with Ozzy.

https://www.moonstock2017.com/

^^^^That was plan B, or maybe C, but I figured: why drive away from the epicenter given I'm already here? Carbondale is in the path, but from what I understand, Hopkinsville is the best spot on the entire planet.

Wow! I thought the event with Kimock was way smaller.

Here's an article with some descriptions of what to expect:

"In all cardinal directions, the horizon will radiate with the oranges, reds, and purples of sunset. Directly above, the planet Jupiter, the star Regulus, and other members of the constellation Leo will sparkle."

Astronomer/author Tyler Nordgren explains, 'No other experience comes close to the multisensory strangeness of this most unnatural of natural events.'

This is going to be cool.

^^^^What to expect, that is, if you're in the totality path.

The first eclipse chasers (that I've seen) passed through the liquor store tonight.

Each of them have been to a few or more total eclipses. Folks from out west.

Seemed like cool cats. They said, "You're gonna love it."

cahokia mounds -  collinsville, il.

welding goggles, brownies, bud and boomers packed and spending it with my best friend who's an alien theory freak

gonna be a good fucking time even if there's a monumental earthquake with the muzak version of michael bolton playing in the backgroundyes

Excursion into the weirdness

I will be at home in Ohio however I wish I could be here instead: www.darkeningofthesunfestival.com. My friend Katrina Haas is going to be there conducting 2 workshops. Shamanism: Learn & Experience Drum Journeying & Finding Your Power Animal, Creating A Mask.

gonna be home in NorCal on the Lost Coast...

no total eclipse here, but 85% is good enough for me

insert zip code, get simulation of what the eclipse will look like at that location:

our local eye doc is donating the viewing glasses to all of our students and faculty.. we'll get over 90% here in western Virginia. as a school, we'll be viewing it. should be awesome!!!

I've decided to avoid the madness of southern Idaho and stay down here at 92%

I thought about driving to the Idaho border but that will depend on early morning traffic- if it looks jammed that early- I'll just head down to the shore of the Great Salt Lake a little later and watch from there- about 5 miles from my house.

A friend is heading to the Tetons- he's leaving tomorrow  (good luck).

He's booked at the Teton Village  -  $500 a night- and will try and get on the tram and view from there.  Should be very cool if the weather cooperates.

After checking that website above, I see we will get 99.1% in North Portland.  Although people keep raving about the wonders of true "totality," its going to be a cluster fuck of epic proportions on the roads, especially when it is all done.   I am staying home on Monday and watching it from the yard.  It will be interesting to see how the chickens react.

oh great the nazis are in prime viewing territory

Alex is so excited

We are getting 72% here in coal country

just got my glasses from the office for monday!!! so excited!!!!!!

exactly - miles of madness for 2 minutes of celestial wonder. I agree it will be cool- but not worth the hassle and expense. Too many f--kin people.

ALL hotel/ motel rooms have been booked for a year in (most) of each state, as well as all rental cars.

ps - can you peek through binoculars with the eclipse glasses on?

I didn't think I cared about seeing the total eclipse until I saw this video. Being less than an hour away from it is making me rethink it.

Meeting up with my lady friend in Madras, Oregon.

should be an adventure getting there..

We're having our own little festival, lol...  15 acres, PBR on tap, stage / PA,  think there's a band (mostly jam session), food, good times!   Just north of Corvallis, OR (and right before Monmouth).  Roads haven't been that bad so far (worse when the students are back, and much worse for football games), so hopefully that doesn't change too much.  But they've closed down much of the forest (Mary's peak, etc), due to fire hazard!

Meanwhile, it's miles of backups in central Oregon, and getting worse!!!

I don't think you're supposed to.

The eclipse glasses I got say "Do not use with any other optical device."

yup - saw that after

thanks

Now searching for mylar film to put over my camera lens

My family and I will be wrapped in aluminum foil and in a lock down in our safe room from 8 am to 8pm.

EVERYONE knows the aliens use the eclipse to attack and suck the information out of the humans.

Where are those aerial views of?

>>>>Where are those aerial views of?

Saw those in the newspaper.   They are the line of folks waiting to get into the Eclipse Fest outside Prineville yesterday.

I'm staying far away from eclipse fest.. although I wouldn't mind seeing cheese.

they killed it at summer meltdown last weekend.

I escaped the madness in Oregon and Picked this week to get in a vacation before one of my girls starts high school. So, don't think I will get any kind of eclipse down here in Costa Rica but will be watching the news back home to see it from afar. Shoulda rented my houses on air BNB, could have made a killing ;-)

Better here than freeranging the area looking for places to camp...

Meanwhile, there's the Willamette Country Music Festival in Brownsville;

Willamette-Country-Music-Festival-87368-1665621493573022716a9fe08052016103857.jpg

yes, Oregon can party...   even if most of these folks are likely Californian, LOL

And then there are all the small gatherings; I am internet friends with a Eugene couple who are going to a farm some ways north of Corvallis with 175 people, music, lots of food, animals and camping in the woods.

The skies are predicted to be clear in the valley, something around 90˚ on Monday, so it should be pleasant in the morning.

Sounds like our party...   north of Corvallis, a lot of the Squirrels crowd will be there

I wonder if it's the same one? Total Eclipse of the Heart. It sounds very sweet.

Well if it is, we'll do a toast to the eclipse together

A little after 10 a.m. on Monday?

I'll be working out and getting ready for work.

Anyone staying up all night or have any special extracurriculars planned?

In the shadow of the moon

I'm walking to an eclipse event panel at the university, and then it's off to Land Between the Lakes for me!

Have a great eclipse, Zoners!

Portland Ken makes me want to type this story....when he said he's going to watch the chickens reaction to the eclipse.

I asked an acquaintance if he had plans for the eclipse....he told me about the last eclipse, in 1979.

He was at work, did not know an eclipse was going to happen, and when it did, it made his day very difficult.  Mainly because the turkeys came back inside when the sun was covered.

His job was to manually inseminate turkeys, send them outside, but when the sun became dark, those with whom he had a moment returned indoors.  He said it was confusing not knowing which ones had been inseminated. and who had not....

funny jobs out there.  That's why I'm stayin' home.  Eugene folks are visiting.

THICK Marine Layer Forcasted here - I Doubt there Will be Very Much to See ? hmm ya never know ?

>>>I didn't think I cared about seeing the total eclipse until I saw this video. Being less than an hour away from it is making me rethink it.

Totally. That ted video and other videos I've watched on the you tubes make me wish I had the foresight to take tomorrow off and drive the 250 miles to get in the totality path. Looks like it will be an amazing experience for those who will be in the "zone". Anything less than totality will be underwhelming in comparison I'm sure. Alas, I will be in my work parking lot checking out 88% coverage through crazy glasses or a cardboard box.

I call Path of Totality as a band name.
