What's Up With NYE

Forums:

In the JRAD cancelation thread there was speculation that Denver/Boulder was overbooked for NYE and that is why JRAD wasn't selling tickets. So I got curious about SF and as of now the only NYE show is Social Distortion at the Fillmore. Nothing booked for Chase, Bill Graham Civic, Warfield, Fox, Independent, Oakland Arena or the Paramount.

Strange

David Nelson Band at River Theater in Guerneville. Ain't no place I'd rather be!

The Mermen at The Chalet, Ocean Beach looks fun

the bay area is a legandary place in the history of parties and music, but at least during most of my adult lifetime, i have found it to be EXTREMELY underwhelming when compared to the nightlife/live music scenes in other major nightlife destinations like NYC, denver or nola.

SF closes down super early - most places to eat close around 10 and only a very tiny handful remain open past midnight. finding lots of interesting shows to go to requires a ton of effort, seeking out obscure websites/publications and keeping up to date with a variety of specific venues, so when that rare show you will like comes thru, you dont miss out. my experiences in places like NYC, nola or denver are polar opposite - there are venues like quixotes, 55 bar or the stone that cater to the specific kinds of music i enjoy, and i can just check whats playing that night if i feel like some live music and can just happen upon great shows pretty regularly. with a place like 55 bar, you dont even need to check - just head on down. most nights there will be some great, rockin jazz. the SF bay does not really have venues like that, at least from my perspective. the bay area's jazz clubs typically dont focus on rockin improv or free jazz - most shows are incredibly boring. places like ashkenaz can have some great music, but youve got to sift thru all the world music, salsa lessons and cringe hippie ecstatic dance nights. aside from the 1 day a week where they host GD nights, you cant just roll up to a venue like that and be sure to catch great music.

to be clear, i fully realize the bay area has better live music options than the vast majority of the USA, and i have not only seen alot of great, very special shows, but have also randomly stumbled across some great shows, plus we have hsbg...but still, i do not feel like the bay areas historical reputation as the counterculture HQ of america, a breeding ground for creative rock music, or a prime nightlife destination reflects what its actually like to go see shows or party in the modern bay area. its still a great place to see live music or go out at night, but IMO the bay area is an absolute shell of its historical reputation.

^^^ Completely agree with that. Bay Area has interesting things going on but you have to poke around. Newsome tried to extend last call to 4 AM but it didn't go anywhere. Most residents were against it.

I haven't gone out to a show on NYE since 1990

Everybody's heading to Goose,,,bwahaha !  I'm just Fuckin around ..I had to.

how come the mermen don't get more props here??

great band and always do the nye chalet dflo mentioned....

and not sure about the sf music scene...but when I lived in SC, there was something to see almost every single night on a wide variety of genres...looping SF into that orbit, there was something of interest always.

Nowadays I have basically 1 club/venue that is not a 30-60 mile ++ drive each way. We DO have a couple of bar venues and such but yeah...my town closes down at 10 as well..

Seen Les Claypool most new yearsez up here.

Furthur reunion at the Warfield

Los Lobos is playing The Rio in Santa Cruz.

For the longest time, I avoided NYE.  I liked to be one of the few people without a hangover waking up early to snowboard or ski on New Year's Day.  Around 2007 I started venturing out and traveling to see a run of shows; in either the Bay area for Grateful Dead related bands or Broomfield, CO for SCI.   I think I missed only one NYE during this period until 2019/2020.  I never felt the need to poke around in Bay Area since it was either Bobby and/or Phil being the main event ... typically at the BGCA.   It's a bit of a haul (16.5 hours driving time) to SF, so while it's great to get a change of scenery from CO, it was far easier to see Cheese at 1st Bank.

Having health issues, I haven't seen an indoor show since of any form since the Before Times, so no plans on my radar this year.  Unfortunately, I have a serious back issue that's looking a lot like me not getting a pass this year ... so no snowboarding either.   It's a little depressing, but Cheese is playing at Gem and Jam Festival in Tucson the first week of Feb, so might have to keep wishing people a Happy New Year until that point ... I've never been (assuming it's outside).

Natch.

I'll probably order out Thai and fall asleep to the Twilight Zone.

We will be in NYC for New Years.   Going to Phish on Thursday and Friday, but got shut out on Saturday.   Govt Mule and Pink Talking Fish are doing their New Years in town, but after two nights of Phish, we might just end up walking around town and checking out the action.   My son's apartment in Long Island City is right on the water overlooking mid-town Manhattan, so that might be a good place to watch the fireworks, especially if the weather is miserable
