what would you sacrifice your grandma for?

Forums:

just something fun ive been mulling over...i dont intend this to be a "reopen america" thread, im pretty much ok with the current state of things in that regard, but i have been thinking alot about the point at which we cut our losses if we are not able to produce a vaccine.

ive heard responses to the "reopen america" argument asking if people would sacrifice their grandparents for things like being able to eat out, or for their stock portfolios.

of course 99% of people are not going to sacrifice their grandparents to eat out or for the sake of their stock portfolios...but just as a totally hypothetical scenario - if the coronavirus pandemic started in 1964, and an effective vaccine or treatment was not able to be produced at all, at what point would you be willing to sacrifice your grandparents, and to what ends?

would you sacrifice your grandparents so that -

the grateful dead could exist?

the beatles could exist?

the entirety of rock music from the late sixties onward could exist?

funk could exist?

hip hop would be invented?

every culturally groundbreaking film made since 1965 could exist?

the modern gay rights movement could exist and gay marriage be legalized?

the modern tech sector could exist?

so that the internet could exist?

5 lbs Acapulco Gold

5 lbs Panama Red

* she's been dead since 75 - you dig her up

So far, I'm not missing the things that haven't been invented yet.

>>>>culturally groundbreaking

?????

I'd sacrifice your grandma for all those things

hypothetically of course

We as Americans put our elderly out to pasture as it is so what difference does it make? We stick them in care homes cuz we don’t want to invest in them the same way they invested in us and just visit from time to time looking for someone who isn’t there anymore. Our reasons are usually selfish any, it’s an “obligation” more than anything else.

My grandparents never saw Jerry.  I think they were okay with that.  They're long gone though.

Most of us here are older than you, Larry, so your hypothetical is more likely at what point are we okay with sacrificing our parents or ourselves.  I don't feel anyone should be sacrificed.  People need to make sensible decisions about what is best for themselves.  If a vaccine isn't procured, that means getting everyone tested and isolating the sick so new infection clusters don't arise.

Would you sacrifice your children to keep Vietnam from having a communist government or to create new business opportunities for Halliburton?

People have been sacrificing their loved ones for stupid shit since the dawn of time.

I'm in the Ras club

Well 5lbs of Santa Marta gold and Michoacán added to the list

for my (Dead) parents too.  Mom always would watch NYE winterland on the news and share her excitement

My dad wouldn't have gotten rid of slavery (if he could have, somehow, magically) if it meant, which it might have, having to give up our "western" way of life, and, I guess, white privilege.

 behavior has to be voluntary.

Personally, I never think min those terms. Society exists to benefit individuals. Some individuals may scrifice themselves for the greater good, but that sort of altruistic

>what would you sacrifice your grandma for?<

You mean like a full on Aztec sacrifice -- pyramid, obsidian knife, yank the heart right out and all?

a buck fifty

i didnt mean it quite so literally - im talking about an imaginary mental excersize world where your specific age doesnt really apply

maybe the way i worded it was a little absurd - ive been thinking about this in response to the commonly repeated lines about "sacrificing your parents or grandparents" for the economy or to go out to eat

maybe a better way to word it would be - knowing what we know now about the cultural, artistic and technological revolutions that took place between 1965 and 1980, if the sarscov2 pandemic happened in 1964 and no meaningful treatment or vaccine was able to be produced within several decades, how long should lockdowns and quarrantines last, if no lockdowns at all means culture and tech will progress mostly as they have in real life, but many will die and get sick, and mass lockdowns for multi year streches means the art, culture and tech that has become a huge part of our lives and who we are will never have a chance to exist, but most of the human lives that would have otherwise been lost would be saved by quarantine/shelter in place/social distance measures?
