I bought it in 1979 and drove it until '87, when I bought a Jeep truck that I drove until 2005, when I bought the Toyota Avalon I am still driving today.
At 312,000 miles the Avalon is still running beautifully, but it's a little ragged along the edges so I am now looking at purchasing my 4th car, likely sometime in the next couple of months.
I can only hope that the next one will be as good as the other three I've had.
Plymouth Horizon. Piece of shit, but I was grateful to have it. Plymouth's failed experiment at air-cooled engines. It eventually caught on fire while I was driving down the road. The good thing was that we got it used from some old dude who had an air force base access sticker, so I used to go rambling around the base late at night. Would sit outside the hangars in the dark watching while they were loading bombs onto aircraft headed to Central America.
1980 Ford LTD wagon. The boat was 16 years old when I received it. Could fit 5 on the front bench seat, 6/7 on the back bench. The back bench also folded down, and on the weekends would be my girlfriends and I accommodations for the night.
nice, phishie. my first car was a 1979 volvo dl sedan, with manual transmission and push button od. lol that button. old car was a tank, though, with the best undercarriage stash spots, ran it close to 275k.
No Doubt Lava, I remember the OD button :) I got an AC button out of a buddies wagon that wasn't hooked up and popped it in my dash. My sister was looking down trying to light a cigarette after dropping me off at work one morning and plowed into a parked car. Totaled the volvo, the car she hit, and the car behind it. She came to pick me up (unscratched btw) after work in the parental car, and I just started screaming "what did you do to my car!!!!". I was really attached to it, and sad to see it go. Made the trip to Hampton in it in '87 and '88. Roanoke '87 as well.
A Plymouth Horizon here too Alias. It was a TC3 model 2 tone piece of shit, but it was all mine.
My little sister and I still laugh at the song we made up while joyriding in it. Casey Jones was on the cassette tape. "Driving that TC3.....high on PCP".
In 1978 my Dad took me to a friends house for a "surprise", I had been working at a day care ( cleaning bathrooms...ughh ) and babysitting forever to save up 500 bucks to buy a car. The garage door opened and this beautiful 1967 Kelly Green Ford Mustang was staring at me :) He said " Do you like it" ? "It's yours " !!
I said " I don't have enough for this car "!
He smiled and said " Give Mr Cucinotta your money". I did and learned that day not to question my Father again, he had some friends in big places that i need not know about ...;)
That car took me thru graduation in 1978 and a lot of awesome memories for many years, you see...it only had 500 miles on it and was garage kept !
First car I got to drive and shared with my siblings was a 1931 Model A Ford that my uncle had restored and then gave to us....
First car that was actually mine was a 1967 Triumph TR4A IRS
that I ran into a tree at 50 mph four weeks after I go it and a day after Nixon resigned. Broke my back and spent 11 weeks (5 in the hospital, 6 at home in a body cast) recovering. Good times.
I had a stream of hand-me-down vehicles from Mom & Pop as they would get more modern stuff. Mid - late 80's Dad fixed up Grandma's '72 Buick, and I drove that around quite a bit, even took it to University in Canada.
That's a 'stock photo' but I still have mine. A little rusty, needs an overhaul / restore. 455 engine ran fine when I parked it.
1972 "Polaris Silver" Bavaria -- Bought it in 1986, though. What a tank-like cruiser it was and I could travel down to shows w/ friends in comfort. Loved the big navy blue leather seats. Didn't own it long as one by one, the window motors went out, and I couldn't afford to fix them... was driving around the rainy nw w/ windows stuck open on some days, LOL. That must be why the price was so low... after this debacle I started researching used cars a lot more! Still love older cars, and now own a 2006 Volvo XC70 w/ over 105K miles...
My first car was a gift from a homeless man I invited into my home for food, shelter and shower.
He was a cross between a used car salesman, first generation Haitian American, and a hippie. I was at the San Francisco Hot springs in the Gila National Forest (spent many weekend there) camping when we met. A week later,I was teaching an art class downtown when I saw him walk by. I stepped out to the sidewalk to greet him. The rest is history. He called himself "Peacekeeper" but after seeing him raid our fridge and eat up the coveted NY pizza we had delivered from an east coast visitor, we started calling him Pizzakeeper!
Since like most of you my first car might be a secret question in password related sites, I will only leave a hint:
1974.5 German vehicle named after a popular Anasazi meal made from an herbivore rodent. It was a primary color other than red or yellow. It was one of the first of its kind with a new fangled WATER COOLED ENGINE. Being that it was made in Germany and most likely produced to satisfy the CAlifornia air quality regulations, it had an engine made almost entirely of hoses. My guess is the masochists that designed it felt it nessasary to have an abundance of rubber hoses available so each time the vehicle broke down (which was often) there would be no shortage of hoses to remove from the engine and begin to beat eachother's naked skin...
The vehicle was a catalyst in the journey of friendships. I met so many great people everywhere I broke down. I also vowed to pick up anyone hitchhiking because after all I was driving a vehicle that was a gift from the universe. Now I know it was nice to pick up anyone , but listen kids, you need to be a little selective with which hitchhikers you give a lift to. Mkay?
The vehicle lasted me 24,000 miles. Not bad for a car that was more apart than together. Also two cross country trips to Maine from New Mexico for migrant fruit picking. Also one of which I drove it through Canada. Upon reentry, held at the border by US Customs agents for 4 hours..... I don't know, maybe it was the long hair....
It died in Vermont when I was working at the Douglass orchard in Shoreham.
Had the top down, 4 in the front seat, 4 in the back seat, 3 sittin on the trunk with their feet on the back seat and 2 lying on the trunk holding on to slot where the top collapses .
Was going from Queens Village to my parents house in Bayside . Cops pulled us over on Francis Lewis Boulevard and asked me what we were doing. I told them we were goin to my house and where it was. They told me to drive slow and don't hit any bumps or potholes .
