What I like about Medeski

The guy plays with a lot of different musicians all the time. This sounds like fun

Don't care for him with Phil at all.

He's a master improviser & every time I've seen him w/Phil it's been downright AWESOME & chock full of SICK jamming (1 show last May, that mini tour in July '13).

((((mini tour July '13))))

He was phenomenal at Last Waltz 40.

I love how percussive he is.  Strangely enough, he doesn't consider himself a good piano player and adapted that style because of a hand condition early on.

Before Oyster head formed, there was a lot of talk of a power trio of Trey, Fishman  and Medeski. They were going to call it Lung.

Absolutely love Medeski but feel like he either holds back or is kept on a short leash when he plays with Phil.

>>>>>>> kept on a short leash when he plays with Phil.

There were a few times on that July '13 mini tour when Medeski was the prime mover behind some of the more Psychedelic Out There jams (Mtns of the Moon @ the Cap, Viola Lee 1st nite Vibes, the jamming w/in the Dark Star/Other One sandwich 2nd nite vibes, most especially the final jam before Stella Blue)

Saw him with Phil in Vegas, it was great, and I want more!

Medeski is great.

Not sure he is very familiar with the GD songbook which would account for why he seems to hold back when he plays with Phil.

I would go with short leash, Medeski can get way out there and I think those days are over for Phil. I think it's funny how peeps are trying to pretend  how he plays with Phil is some measure of his ability. GD music aint hard to play. He's much more than that as a player.

Oh I'm a fan of many of his other projects, including collaborations w/Nels Cline (I had to miss those shows in NYC back in Oct/Nov), but the jamming parts, when he's playing w/Phil, are top notch.

Combustication is an underrated classic from the 90's.

Love that album.

Not a left of Left Hand going on, as I recall.

But he could have just six fingers and be more interesting than that CRB guy.

Got to see Medeski play with Nels at LPR back on the Fall, then with MMW at the same venue for the rescheduled show last month.  Both were stunning and what a place to see a show.

Just saw that he's playing in SF in June in a new Jackie DeJohnette quartet with Scofield and Larry Grenadier.

That should be a good one.
