...

Been listening to Ween on OVERLOAD last few months. Just a great classic rock and roll band

It looks they have successfully scrubbed Gene's 2011 Vancouver meltdown from YouTube. Shame, that was pure Ween.

How I wish
How I wish you were here
We're just 50 drunk bros
Standing at a Phish show
Year after year
Noodling over the same old sound
What have we found?
The same old scene
Wish you were Ween..

I don't get ween. Never did.

Have you checked out 12 Golden Greats?  Hot Country licks and some damn funny lyrics.

When I first heard them, I didn't really get it, but over time it clicked.  Chocolate & Cheese and The Pod are real good places to dive in.

Ween is an awesome fucking band.

I listened to chocolate and cheese today the whole way thru. Interesting. Thanks. I can say I have probably not spent more time pondering the cover of any album in any cd dollar bin more than this one over the years. I see it's now 26 years old. I liked buenos tardes amigo (I've heard that in the past I realized, good song) and don't shit where you eat the best. It does have something of a Neil young meets beck kind of thing going on. Definitely have heard spinal meningitis before too it's nice to place that.

Do these guys improvise live, or is it mostly straight ahead album cuts like?

ill listen to 12 golden greats next

Ween is the dirty Beatles.

The Mollusk and White Pepper are masterpieces.

Okay youse brown nosers get ready to get yer asses handed to yas. Head phones or crank it all the way up!!

"a really kick ass performance at a club we've played a dozen times over the years.
I can't think of too much to say about this show---i mean it was in rochester. we
basically smashed rochester's ass into pieces and then left." -Micky Mouse

Hey All, I've been coming to the zone (other stuff) for years now but never really posted.  I kinda love this place and appreciate being apart of it in one way or another.  Mainly browsed for show information and whatnot but enjoy many of the threads these days.  Anyways, WEEN is definitely something to check out.  Gener is an excellent song writer and Deaner is a talented guitarist and the shows are super psychedelic.  I'd say start with the album Quebec.

^agreed.

ive seem em a bunch, and their improvisation combined w/ their album cuts is just awesome. very psychedelic. saw them jam out i can't put my finger on it -- face melting.

their Live @ Stubbs from 2000 album is awesome.

as stated above. white pepper is great, as well as the mollusk.

id say chocolate and cheese ---> quebec is all really great.

great live band to eat gorgeous lsd at.

watching them do motörhead's ace of spades was one of the most intensely psychedelic things i've ever seen.

Lots of shows on archive too.  Even the ones that aren't SBD are pretty good quality.  And yes, Ween and L with some face melting, so fun!!  Kinda weird now but I was at their last show in new haven before the world ended... Ooo the ole days

>>>I'd say start with the album Quebec

I think of that as later day Ween. I started seeing them in 95.

In the '90s a few friends raved about them and played some stuff but it didn't work for me. Then I saw them at the Warfield, and it was just bad. Like, just bad.

A few weeks later someone I worked with asked me what I thought of the show, and after I told him he laughed and said that the band had made some comment about that particular show being bad, so I wasn't sure what to think, maybe I had missed something, but ultimately bad sticks in your mind so I wrote them off and didn't see them again.

Until 2016, when they played the Bill Graham Civic. I went with friends expecting a party and nothing else and god damn, it was a fuckin' rock show and pretty much blew my mind.

So after that I became a fan.

Here's the show, which made #4 on my 10-best shows of the year list, and here's what I wrote to myself in my show list...

"Wow, how did I miss this? I had no idea how good & how deep these guys are/CRUNCH!!!/so many different angles, all with a HEAVY groove, all damn well played, these guys are GREAT!/show started off a bit dull and I wasn't sure about it, but as with all great shows it got better and suddenly I realized I was in love with this grungy, heavy rock band/drummer & bass player were great, but who knew Dean Ween was a guitar hero?!!?/dude was on fire and LOUD, just the way rock guitar is supposed to be/they covered lots of ground and I'm now a fan/a GREAT show"

Just a little rock 'n roll, that's all I ask.

Brownest Ween show I've ever seen.

They absolutely burned the place down.

It was funny watching the field slowly empty of the Bliss Ninny hippies until just the Ween fans had the concert field to themselves.

^awesome, thanks.

cool story, lance. when they're on, they're one of the best doing it.

The pod is my personal favorite. To me the only album that is passable is la cucaracha. Would be a shame if they ended it on that note. Admittedly, I don't listen to pure guava that much but I laugh hysterically the whole way through it. So much unreleased stuff all over the web and so many great songs that I'd thought they'd do shinola vol 2 but who knows if there will ever be another ween album.

for any one new to ween there is a great amount of their music available in my different genres and categories for listening, enjoy!

Ween = top 3 live concert experience of all time (along with Dean Ween solo band).  saw them for the first time back in 2018 in Bend, Oregon, where they played the Mollusk album in its entirety. absolutely blown away/had my face ripped right off my head.

that's saying a lot considering all the music i've seen over the last 25 years.

Deaners band is also very good. Would like to see them again.

Ween has enough quality unreleased stuff they could produce Shinola Vol 2 & 3.  Lockn was pretty great but those guys seem to put on better performances when they're not at a festival.  Don't get me wrong, it's amazing whenever you can see em but I think they feel more comfortable doing their own thang mang.

Phish or Ween?

^^thats the sick i can't put my finger on it.

my god, so high. they blew out the pa i believe. great carny vibe that night on the waterfront.

deaner telling his story about living in a van or some shit in burlington decades ago selling weed haha.

good times.

The two Ween shows on the Waterfront in 2018 were indeed both great evenings.

Were any of you at the 7/11/09 Ween Burlington Waterfront gig?

Another great one:

Deaner is awesome and Dave Dreiwitz is a great bass player.

Wasn't at the 09 waterfront show but sounds like great fun.  The Demon Sweat, I Can't Put My Finger on It at the waterfront 18' was something special.  Had a big crew at that show and I went to school in Burlington so ran into a bunch of old friends.  High times.

that's the hardcore stuff alright.

This thread's a good a reminder of how many diverse levels of this band there is, from meh to stupid to rockin to sublime to mind blowing.

quite the mixed bag, I haven't listened to them for a while but it's always an interesting ride.

i feel privileged to have been at a couple shows in this thread.

Audio of that lockn show convinced me I had to see them, which I finally did for the first time at that show lance linked.

everyone seemed to like the second night of that run better, which I missed to participate in the criminally under attended Sacramento zoner jam, but sometimes browner is better.

While not nearly as nasty, I liked that Bend show too, fun time and one of my favorite poster designs of any concert I've ever attended.

saw deener band open for p-funk a few years ago, that was kinda nifty.

finger bangin' is a hilarious song and the set closer rendition of 'The rift' was pretty hardcore.
