WCZJ II Oregon Coast Campout

Forums:

WCZJ II is happening next weekend (Aug. 28-29) in beautiful Ona Beach on the central Oregon Coast.

We have an entire rural property a few miles inland rented Saturday night and folks are camping there Friday night too.   Pet friendly and plenty of space for physical distancing.

There will be jamming, food, and fun.  Directions and details below.    All are welcome and hope to see you freeks there.

Ona Beach.jpg

8 miles south of Newport, (or 7 miles north of Waldport,) turn East onto N. Beavercreek Rd across from Ona Beach State Park. Go 1 mile, then veer Rt onto S. Beavercreek Road. Go 2.8 miles, then turn Lt onto n.S-Low Rd.(Gravel dead end road). Less than 1 mile, we are the 2nd property on the Rt. At our driveway(278) you will see a beautiful painted sign that says Art Barn. Follow bumpy driveway down and to the right. Park at the huge metal barn. Rvs and car camping in barn parking lot (or in meadow in front of barn during dry months-usually July-Sept). Tent Camping is in the smaller meadow, or across the grassy bridge in the big field. Pick anywhere you want- open air or under trees.  Cold running (non potable) water in kitchen at the back of the barn, and hand/dish washing water barrels and solar shower bags behind barn. . Porta potties in parking lot. ((PS, kayak, canoe, or fish or swim just off hwy 101 when you turn onto N.Beavercreek road, before driving to the property))

Thanks Ken!

Here's the link to the old thread w/ links to the farm and more detail: https://vivalazone.org/other-stuff/announcing-unique-opportunity-west-co...

If you want to escape the smoke and heat of my beloved California, this would be a good place to do that with lots of space to social distance.....and there'll be music when you arrive!

actually, West Coast Zoner Jams I-VI happened from 2007 thru 2012... all of those were in California, from SF to the North Bay

https://www.facebook.com/wczjadmin/photos/a.280074495346104/468778656475...

so, if you wanted to stay consistent with the existing numbering scheme, the upcoming event would be either WCZJ VII or WCZJ VIII

this sounds like it's gonna be a Real Good Time... so for the sake of us who will be staying home, I'm asking those in attendance to take lots of photos and (eventually) post a few here on Viva so the couch-tour crowd can join in semi-vicariously

love to all... no exceptions

WCZJ VII it is!   Thanks GaryFish.

Will definitely take photos... we may even attempt a stream just for laughs since there's WIFI... but will post advance notice here if that works out.

Willow, owner of Artfarm / Heartbarn posted some photos to Insta yesterday -- they are preparing the space and carved new campfire seating!
I invited Willow and her family to join us for paella on Saturday.

The place is looking great. (didn't even notice the pleasure dome before :-)

Most of my camping gear is packed, going over final hootenanny checklist, the countdown has begun!

....after you're done playing in the, ahem, pleasure dome, you can join us barn loungers to stream this at 5pm:

After putting their weekly Shakedown Stream series on hold, the Grateful Dead have announced that this week, on Aug. 27, they will air the film Sunshine Daydream as a “pop-up” Shakedown Stream. Proceeds from donations during the stream will benefit Rex Foundation.

Sunshine Daydream “tells the story of how the Grateful Dead traveled to Veneta, Oregon and reunited with the Merry Pranksters for a common cause – to throw a benefit concert for the Kesey family’s Springfield Creamery.” (Quote via the band’s announcement post.) The entire show in question, Aug. 27, 1972, is available as an archival release.

The post also urged fans to stay tuned for an announcement of the Shakedown Stream pre-show guest.

yeah, everyone's seen it, but still fun.... there was also a Merry Prankster dinner in Eugene last weekend to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the acid test -- there are like 35 images on Facebook.

###

I created a Facebook post and invited several local area musicians, so far a few turn downs and one maybe...   most haven't seen the post yet.

I did invite a few pranksters, and several more well known musicians, including Mark Karan, Phil, Pete Sears, and while I may have low expectations, I still invited them, LOL

Also, got my strat fixed up so it's playable again, need to buy new strings for it and the acoustic next....

Thanks Noodler!  Fingers crossed... it'll be fun no matter what.

All --  last-minute deciders welcome on Saturday since we have paid for the entire farm.

Just show up!

A small group is also camping there on Friday, that night would require a reservation on Hipcamp.... see old thread for those links.

Oooops, I am so tired I'm off on my dates... we will not stream Sunshine Daydream in the barn on the 27th, since our first day there is the 28th, LOL

Well how cool is this!! Happy to see the WCZJ is alive and well...

^^^^pack your camping gear and join us... I think Treeflo might be looking for a ride if you live in Bay Area.

Low headcount this weekend, but there will be music, good food and fun.

Got to start somewhere.... and plan a larger event w/ a real band at the same site next year....

Not in the cards for us. Taking our daughter to UCLA to start her new life...Hope all that attend have a grand time...(((jam zoner jam)))

totally understand... next year's dates should probably be earlier in August to avoid school conflicts.

keep an eye on this thread for pics or possibly a stream link!

safe travels

Hope all you folks have a Ball out there.  Oregon Coast this time of year is about one of the most Gorgeous places in the World :)

Live that life and enjoy!

Hey Canyon!  Come around more often!

>>>Taking our daughter to UCLA to start her new life<<<

Damn Canyon, congratulations, to her AND you two!

What a thing that must be.

WAY TO GO CANYONS!!!!!

Sincerest best wishes for a GREAT F**KING TIME!!!!!!!!!  Congrats on pulling it off. Looks like a beautiful spot.

Picked up some Magic Purple Petro for the weekend  (34.11% and with a nice mild social buzz, along with some Big Block #6 @ 38.25%)

118124996_10217278617710180_92024011797278703_o.jpg

Next, changing the guitar strings  (too rusty to dust off one more time)

Bought the booze  (planning on bloody marys, rum / cokes, white russians, etc)

And since i'm not a singer / strummer type (more a lead / ensemble player, always back up the vocalist),  I had to dig deep to find songs I use to sing decades ago, and think I can pull off 2 sets (with everyones help of course), so bring on the show!!!   Looking forward to playing with Ken and China-rider(?) and any other players that make it out. They've got some percussion toys out there, and I'll try and remember to bring the egg shakers, etc...

Didn't get any takers from my FB post, but always the possibility of some coming out, we'll see what happens...  so far looks like less than 10 of us, so very much looking forward to fireside chats and getting to know everyone.

Weatherwise, there's a low clipping by to our north, which will likely generate a bit of a sea breeze, meaning the temperatures should be extremely comfortable, not too hot, not too cold, with morning clouds possible, but most importantly, all that smoke will be kept out of our area (Sunday that might change)

Nice Noodler!  See you all soon!

Have phun phreaks.

Damn, Noodler. That purple bud looks deadly.

>>>Damn Canyon, congratulations, to her AND you two!

What a thing that must be.

WAY TO GO CANYONS!!!!!

Thanks buddy. It really is an amazing thing to watch someones dream come true. She worked her ass off and did it all herself. She got to choose between Berkeley and UCLA. The sunshine beat the East Bay...So now were LA bound...I'll try Mr. D...

Beautiful nugs.

wish this was in the cards for me this weekend, but doesn't look like it

have fun

Nice nugz Noodler.

Dispensary? If so, can you mention? Gonna hit one of the locals tomorrow.

Have fun at the ZSD (Zoner ShinDig).

They came from Marie Janes on 3rd and Western

Have a blast.

Thanx.

One of my drummer friends is thinking about coming out, still on the fence, I think his girlfriend plays percussion too!

This place is lit.  Seriously.

Noodler, perhaps you are wearing purple to match the bud? That's seriously lovely.

I hope y'all are having great times.

Haven't decided on the wardrobe yet, lol, but broke out the tools and got the electric sort of set up, it's playable at least...   new strings on the acoustic, looking forward to the jam, been a very very long time!   (heading out tomorrow sometime)

Awesome team Zoners , I am with you in spirit, just wasn't in the cards

and fwiw the team Lisa and canyon are awesome too

too little of you guys over the last few years.  But life has its priorities, and labor begats fruit.   (Even if she chose bruins over bears!)

bring a parent gives us so much, and being proud is completely ok (and I know that you guys are far more modest than I). Have your chest swell, and let a tear trickle as you drive away (holding sweet Lisa's hand)

FYI Hendrix and prince rocked purple pretty well...

It's a beautiful day, plenty of sunshine and blue sky yes

Preparing the fire pit for paella cooking!

FEB0F9E8-00E7-4BB9-B293-AC9BE52163BB.jpeg

That fire pit needs some work. Aren't there any rocks in Oregon?

trucks loaded, getting ready to head out...  (sounds like my drummer friend is coming, woot!)

(and i'm bringing a bag of agates to decorate the fire pit, LOL)

It really looks lovely there.

Crabbing with Ken!  This one is a keeper.

Looks like a Grate time, Have a Blast... And Congrats to the Canyons!!!!

Amazing place out here, wowzer!   I think there's 5 of us, LOL...

Drums almost set up, hopefull add a few pics later...

5 is better than 3!

And it's a start. Next year, when we WILL be back to semi-normal there will be more.

What a great effort on you'all's part. You get an atta'babe from me!

Whoop it up, and keep the photos coming.

Kool photos --

I have a similar Boss Tuner TU-12 or TU-15,  what a great tuner.

mixlr.com is free to sign up and stream you just have to download the app to smartfone.

https://mixlr.com/terrapinradio
for example.

Hope you guys stream the Stuff :)

looks like a very cool gathering spot... with lots of things to do on-site or within a very short drive

the stage is awesome... needs a couple tie-dyed sheets for stage ambiance...

is that white panel above the stage a projection screen?  if so, future events there could have a liquid light show and/or a multi-media slide show/videos

what your group might lack in numbers, will be more than offset be your enthusiasm, camaraderie, and the memories you'll make

I look at this year's Jam as a very important advance scouting expedition... to lead the way for next year's event which I hope will happen

instead of Lewis & Clark, it's something like Llollo & Co.

Good-Looking Chocolate-Golden Lab guarding the Paella.

Nice Doggy !!

Hüsky would thieve all that if unattended.

One of these days.

Wish I could have made it! Looks great heart

Some of everything! Including fuel with the flammables - it's like one-stop shopping.

Nex' year, mon.

It looks and sounds pretty wonderful there. Good find, LLOLLO.

Looks like a blast!
I'd love to attend next year.

Way WAY Cool Thread ! WCZJ Still Lives ON !

funky fun, good job gang!

That place looks awesome. Only 5 of you to enjoy all that? Plenty of space to social distance. Looks like a great place for DNB to play for a weekend.

And the Paella looks scrumptious!

hopefully no one slept last night for various reasons.

art barn with music -- gotta love it.  good stuff, as Jorma would say

yeah, that food looks real good, too.

Everything looks great. I know the Paella was, I have had Lollo's Paella. Really yummy.

Shamey finger for all you Oregonians that did not make it. How much did that cost you for the rental, Lollo?

Why no group photos?

Hope to make this next yr. We'll see.

Hey Mark, shamey finger for the shamey finger.

PIC OF THE PEEPS!!

Did anybody dig a hole???

you KNOW folks had a good time when only one of the participants checked in here with post-game pics, which showed the Art Barn and surrounding area, and great food, but no people... lol

what happens at the Art Barn, STAYS at the Art Barn

LLOLLO and China > Rider came to visit this afternoon on their way back from the coast. They brought the glow of a great time with Noodler and Ken (and drummer friend), leftover paella(!), black walnut tincture, a CD, and even more. Sounds like the music came together and flowed beautifully with everyone but LLOLLO playing.

It was great to meet China > Rider, visit with him and LLOLLO and the paella was super good. The reheated paella was really really really good, with and without the lemon, M.

The pics and stories are good enough that I'm considering going next year if it happens again, and that's saying a lot.

Looks like a place that had many acid tests.

Or should!

if y'all do this next year, i am there. 5 hour drive from my home.

Just a hair under 21 hours from Denver, but I would gain an hour. So, that's nice.

It was great playing with Noodler and Ken and Bob the drummer!  Will post more pics later. Been off the grid camping but wanted to post WCZJ 7 songs played that I remember while I have a little connection.
Please add to this list, (not in the order played) ...

Friend of The Devil

Franklins Tower

Tangled Up In Blues

Me And My Uncle

Hey now!  Several days of camping and hiking and 1 speeding ticket in Eastern Oregon (85 in a 70) later.....

I confess: I was having so much fun (and very tired from the work days leading up to it) that I spaced taking photos of the WCZJ-7 band on stage and gave up at attempting a stream. My apologies to all.

I know, lame. I already started a list of ideas/improvements for WCZJ-8 in 2021, including the need for a WiFi streaming volunteer.
Willow, the host/owner was great to work with and wants us back next year with more Zoners.

I was grateful to witness jams that sounded like these guys had played together before...and big thanks to Noodler who lured in a local drummer at the last minute (who already said he'll join us next year).....Noodler, Ken and China>Rider all had strong on-stage presence and humor... I felt privileged to be one of the 3 audience members in between tending food and fire.

Here is password-free link to the Google album... including images of us toasting LLTD with the tequila he contributed!

This link also allows the addition of more images if anyone has more to add to the story.

https://photos.app.goo.gl/RHGC2H4A63PjPHWVA

Onward to next year!

MarkD>. You asked how much this place cost... it was $500 get the entire property for 1 night.  I thought it was important to do this because of COVID.

Next year, if COVID is over, the legal capacity will be 300. We could consider a private site or not...

I'm thinking that a 3-night event would work well and may be more attractive to travelers: 1st night for set up and Zoner Jam, 2nd night for a paid band, and 3rd night unscheduled for R&R.

Ideas welcome...please add them to this thread.

Cool pics, LLOLLO. Thanks for sharing them.

Hoping next yr works out, Lollo.  Thanks for the pics. Great job!

but, but, all those people are old.....

(and apparently know how to do it right...nice little party)

It all looks good and you all look great! I loved the leftover paella, and C > R I love the CD. I don't usually like Warren Haynes but I do on this one. (He sounds a little like Brent.)

There are a lot of Zoner musicians, LLOLLO, you might think about getting more of them and skipping the paid band.

Thanks Judit!  It was a fun time all around and I thank everyone who helped out with ideas, musician outreach, travel time and funds.
Good idea about sticking to the all-Zoner band.
It was a treat to see you again, too.

All zoner band

And DNB.  Only so many more trips around the sun.....

( A man can dream)

^^^ I'm certainly not opposed to this dream, but want to highlight Zoner musicians first!

A play-for-pay band would require a lot of fundraising, too. Don't want to make it a public ticketed event, as that would trigger all sorts of health and other kinds of permitting and attention, I expect.

I want to work with Willow to help her navigate these details if necessary.

Speaking of Willow, I inquired about fire danger at Artfarm / Heartbarn and she responded with:

"Ya pretty bad out here today. Orange and red skies and very smoky. Fires are about 50 miles away, I think. We are packing a bag just in case. I'm praying every moment I can remember for the health and the sanity of the land and the peoiple, and for the winds to die down and the rains to come."

Send rain drumbeats to Artfarm!

Looks like a Wonderful place out there at Art-Farm-Barn,  and you probably had Perfect Weather.

Oregon Coast this time of year really can't be beat.  (Except for unusual forest-fires)

All sorts of cool random objects there in the fotos... interesting collection of Goop.  The Paella looks Delicious !!

Thanks Disco!    Start saving now for next year!

We did have perfect weather and am really grateful that it happened when it did, given the fires.

My dear friend Bob, who was kind enough to play drums for us that fine night, just shared a brief campfire moment that's actually pretty funny!

Bob on vocals, me on squeaky vocals, might be another vocalist, but i'm on guitar;

https://www.amazon.com/photos/shared/rkEZcWZ1QDSPQLFiggavbA.ltM8wWxq9Tm4...

That was fun to hear. thanks.

WC Campfire Serenade  LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL LOL fuckin lefties LOL

Awwww! What a nice memory, thanks for posting.

I was just dreaming of going camping at the coast this weekend and wake up to this.

Willow did a complete renovation of the barn and performance spaces over the last year.

Hope to return some day.
