Wasn't that a time at TXR!!!

Forums:

Went to TXR tonight to the "Ramble" with Luther and Cody Dickinson for the first set, with Phil and the Family Band added for the second. I left before it was over, but was sure glad I went. This was the third time I've seen/heard Luther and the second with Cody. Raunchy, simple, complicated, lively, happening music.

Saw many zoners, Johnny D, Lance, Roland, Peak, Formerly Brett, DFlo, heard that Canyon was there but didn't see him, others I'm forgetting as I pack to go hiome after a week here.

It was a fine time! If you were there, please fill in the gaps.

Yes it was a very fun time all around.

Let it Grow is always  a highlight for me.

Luther was energetic as ever and didn't  disappoint.

It was an unexpected pleasure to see you, (judit), there.

Safe travels phriend.

And Judit motivated me to get back to posting on the zone!...

Great seeing ya'll and way above average grateroom show.

So much fun!

It was a small, but wonderful Zoner reunion - grate gathering of fine folks from north, south, and east.

The Dickinsons started promptly at 8PM with a stripped down (2 person) short set of non-stop hard rockin' blues.  Loose and energetic.  Hot stuff!  Felt like something that may have been perfectly at home in 1967.

That set the table for a Good Ole rockin' set of GD tunes with the Family Band taking stage (no keys, though Codi reached over his drums to tickle a keyboard nearby).  Luther was so into it, that I often nearly forgot that Phil was on stage.  Phil's bass seemed a little lower in the mix than usual, but he appeared to be having a great time and I regularly followed his lines down a few holes. (Yes, Let It Grow was fantastic!)

Luther was essentially unleashed for the whole night, which was a good thing, IMHO.

Great energy on stage and in the house.  That Room still has a lot to offer.

E) We bid you goodnight; with Tom Petty shout out Free Fallin'  verse to close it out.

Welcome back, Bret!

And didn't Luther say a little phrase, like "Running down a dream"?  Of something like that.

Man, I would LOVE it if they allowed a recording of this to become available.  Would be a good listen

I like this thread yes

NSB  nice long opener  heard at the end of the song..."wait ...was that just the set opener"

Cool- group of us going tonight

Cool.  Safe travels, J.

Was hoping you would be there tomorrow, Judit.  Next time. Safe travels.

Listened 2 a nice stream of this shoe. After Throwing Stones & B4 Lovelight there was a nice Mountain Jam tease. Throughout the set  Luther hinted at other tunes. So energetic. Strong stuff smiley

>>>Felt like something that may have been perfectly at home in 1967.

and yet they were doing this all over the south, for sometimes less than 15 people throughout the late 90's

((( North Mississippi Philstars ))) from bret's first youtube link.

I'd really really really like to re-hear/see Luther and Cody's set. I wonder if anyone taped it? I flew home today and remember such a nice evening.

listened to a bit and i immediately notice the difference with a more skilled drummer in the band. was really blown away by cody's drumming at a telstar set he played a couple years back. didnt expect such a complex style with so many different sounds and textures, i thought he was going to be a more straightforward hard rocker type drummer, and maybe in some other projects he is, but when i saw him with phil he really showed some depth.

hope we good a good vid or recording of the let it grow, id probably check that out, its one of my favorite dead tunes and a phil rarity.

still perplexed at the whole alex koford thing - he really seems to be the weak link, the sound of the whole band changes when a competent drummer is in the mix.

Daylight, don't forget that Alex Koford is probably the best singer in the TFB. Having 2 drummers was okay last night. I usually don't like Koford's drumming at all but heard him and Cody playing together elevated his playing. Among other things, he wasn't as loud and out in front for no reason.

I hope we'll get reports of tonight's NMAS show.

This is one where I would get the TXR thumb drive...but they stopped doing that didn’t they?

Well, I think he's competent.

Just not a lot more than that.

glad you had a good time!

dude, those guys phil plays with aren't fit to carry cody's sticks.

nice interview on sirius xm buddy and jim show a few weeks ago. cody/luther talked about playing/learning from phil and how it was a similar experience of the old masters passing down the knowledge ala r.l. burnside. cody is also a good rhythm guitar player.

listening to the speedway link above...

i just don't get the family band deal. its phil's perogative to play with his kid...i get it and all ....but dude, they're not any good. sorry know its a dead horse.but seriously could out up a craiglist add and get more talent or someone with some gravitas....

Im so envious of Westies when I hear of the good times at TXR. Glad y'all had phun.`

Speaking about craigslist Turtle, have you read this interview?
