Washington State Declares Death Penalty Unconstitutional

We are now the 20th state to abolish capital punishment.

Proud today to be a resident of this state.

Good move.

Congratulations! We are lagging in this important matter.

Capital punishment is a legal penalty in the U.S. state of Oregon. In November 2011, Governor John Kitzhaber announced a moratorium on executions in Oregon, canceling a planned execution and ordering a review of the death penalty system in the state. Because Oregon's death penalty was instituted by popular vote, it can only be repealed by a ballot measure.

Some people just deserve to die so not opposed to it in theory, BUT time and time again, people on death row have been shown to be innocent and certainly many innocent people (especially black ones) have been executed over the years.  For that reason, its a good thing the practice is on its way out.

Who gets to decide who deserves to die? You? A majority vote? The government? Am appointed judge? An elected judge?

Everyone, and society as a whole, has the right to self defense. If a dangerous person is in custody there is no more need for self defense and therefore none for force or violence - including the death penalty.

Conservatives be frothing. Was just banned from the WA State FB Tea Party group for applauding this huge humanitarian win.

The same question can be asked about who gets to decide who deserves to be locked away for life with no chance of parole.  Some would consider that a fate worse than death.

There are many schools of thought on crime and punishment.   Is the criminal justice system there to protect people from dangerous criminals?   To reform criminals?  To punish?  To deter crime?   If retribution and punishment is one purpose of the criminal justice system, are there some criminals whose acts are so depraved and heinous that death is the appropriate punishment, like Jeffrey Dahmer, John Wayne Gacy, Ted Bundy, Adolph Hitler, and Henry Lee Lucas?

Of course, this is simply philosophical, because as long as there is any chance whatsoever that an innocent person will be executed, the practice should be banned.

Or, as long as there is any chance whatsoever that the guilty person could be rehabilitated, the practice should be banned.
