Where are you located, Stringtwang? I'm in the mountains north of LA and we got 8-9 inches of heavy, wet snow Thursday night. Not the storm of the decade, ot even storm of the year, but we need all the precipitation we can get.
I'm in Boulder County Colorado. It's just funny because everything was canceled this weekend (including my second Pfizer shot) and so far no snow. Maybe it will ramp up later.
Spent the last week camping in Death Valley and the eastern Sierra. Sleet, dust storms, the whole works. Nasty wind since Monday. Finally started to die down this afternoon.
I was thinking about heading out that way in early / mid-April, but had read that some of the designated campsites in the region are shutdown due to covid? ... although read in a recent thread on PT about BLM land in the mojave being open to camping.
My area got hit the same as Texas a couple of weeks ago with the power and water outages. The small city I live in still had water. I work at the water plant with a good crew. We helped supply water to the bigger city across the river and the big Air Force base. We had lines of tanker trucks backed up supplying the local hospitals. We did good.
Stringtwang, hope the wet snow doesn't get too deep and may the melt be fast.
Colorado still waiting, or did the storm finally hit?<<<
Just got back from snowboarding. Telluride Ski Area reported 16" overnight. It's still snowing, but not really all that hard at the moment ... although forecast for where I'm at is calling for 3-7" this afternoon and 2-4" tonight. It was kind of a sh1tshow on the mountain, but still fun. The didn't get the upper mountain opened until 2pm and lots of people in town ... Texas spring break and lots of regional travelers.
My brother managed to get reservations at Furnace Creek campground about two weeks ago and we stayed there the first two nights. It was a good location to meet up with nice amenities like ample water, flush toilets and a little cell service, but it was crowded and noisy. Lots of college kids and old RV guys partying. At least the campsites were spread out enough. Its near many of the popular tourist sites like Zabriskie Point, Badwater (lowest place in the western hemisphere), and the Star Wars filming sites. We then stayed three nights in the northern part at the Mesquite Springs campground. Much more low key and scenic and attracted different types of campers (Sprinters and Subarus). No cell service but still had water (hence the "springs""). We just got up early and drove up there and there were plenty of spots open at 10:30 am. That's the trick - first come, first served. We were up a hillside watching all the RVs pulling in at sunset only to find no room in the inn and back out to the desert they went.
The rule in Death Valley about dispersed camping is you can camp anywhere down a dirt road so long as you are a mile or more from a paved road and its not otherwise marked as "no camping." Made it back to civilization today (if you can call Burney CA civilization) and I will post more about the whole trip soon..
I don't know the official tally but approximately 2 feet fell today. I moved a lot of snow today and pretty much nobody is going to be able to go anywhere tomorrow.
Even if main roads get cleared the small roads are too deeply covered with wet, heavy, spring snow. Best to stay home. Everything is closed or canceled for tomorrow.
