I visited a friend of mine yesterday who wanted me to hear his new speakers, the Magnat Transpuls 1500s. I'm also a big Klipsch fan and if you love Klipsch's you will love these. They are at the top of your price range but that is for new, not used.
I've had my Totems for a long time and love them. I wish the bass went a little deeper but other than that they just play music. You can find floor standers for under a grand.
The Fives, to my ears at least, don't have as much bass and are a little hot in the mid and upper ranges. One nice thing about them is that if you are looking for a minimal setup, they are self amplified. All you need to do is plug in a turntable, disc player, etc and you are good to go. Great for those spaces that don't have a lot of room for equipment. Don't get me wrong, they are a good sounding speaker, just not as good to my ears as others. If you already have an amp/receiver, the Fives aren't for you since you can't use it.
Which brings up a big point when it comes to speakers. All too often, people get caught up with "specs" when it comes to speakers. Take your time, listen to as many speakers as possible and take note of which ones sound "right" to you. Some manufacturers have a listen at home and return if the aren't for you policy. Always best to hear speakers in the space they are going to be located in. If that route isn't possible, go to a good audio shop, bring some of the music you tend to listen to and spend some time listening for the one that makes you smile.
Thanks Skifurther! Actually this is good advice. I do not currently have an amp, so "active speakers" if this is what they are called, are what would work best for me. Built in amp if perfect for me. I wil check them out and do some more research. Thanks a lot!
Do you know if your turntable has a built-in pre-amp? If not then even an active speaker won't have enough gain for the turntable. You will need to get a pre-amp to boost the signal. Bellari makes decent ones for a couple hundred bucks. Pro-ject makes them in that price range too but I personally prefer the Bellari.

The Fives have a built in phono pre-amp. They also have a 90 day return policy if they don't work for you like you want. Klipsch is also pretty good on running sales direct on their website. Their Black Friday sale starts in about 60 hours from me posting this.
Its moe than just vynal to help answer this. What is the rest of your systems components? You have a receiver or separates, pre-amp, tuner, etc? What are the dimensions of your listening room--square, wood floors, carpeting, etc. Listen to vynl is a consideration but much more is needed to give good data other than just recommend speaker brands. I love Klipsch, have had KG4 for many years and my buddy had the macdaddy, Klipsch Horns that would scare all the deer in the forest. There are many excellent speakers out there in your price range--glad to help if I had more skinny.
Greasyheart ~ If you read above, he does not have any other equipment than a turntable. No amp or pre-amp. Because of that, active speaker like the Fives are right up his alley.

If I couldn't find a good walnut pair for under 1000 I'd either keep saving or go KG4(very underrated) if space is an issue or an older Forte.
I traded a pair of LaScalas for mine.
