Possible that they thought there were multiple shooters as shots were being fired from different directions from the hotel room? We now know that they guy set up tripods to fire at different directions.

On 9/11 the newscasters said that US fighter jets shot the last plane out of the sky over Pennsylvania then it was never mentioned as such again. I was sitting there watching them say it.
