Wants the money to go to his assistants and to help fund other UVA sports programs.

Tony's a class act, and a great coach to boot.  The Hoos are set for a nice long run.

Great singer too

Sorry, that Tony left his heart in San Francisco, not on The Lawn.

Tony is a good guy and from a good family that has had a massive presence in basketball in Wisconsin.

Lets put this into perspective though. He makes 4.15 million dollars a year to coach college basketball at a public school. He works in the structure of the NCAA which is an organization that makes billions of dollars a year off of the backs of unpaid student labor.

So there’s all of that too.

He seems genuinely humble and grateful.  How often do you see people say "you know, we're okay, but how about my neighbors"?  As for his players, he is offering them great coaching to prepare them for pro careers or otherwise, and a tuition to an excellent school.

The salary structure in the NCAA is a joke. Sports coaches shouldn’t be the highest paid employees in the state. Easy to be humble and grateful when you’ve pulled down tens of millions of dollars in salary.

Your “the players are paid with their scholarship and coaching” is an old and tired one in this day and age of billion dollar TV contracts.

Let’s not put Tony up for sainthood quite yet. He’s part of the second most corrupt sports business in the world, next to FIFA.

^ Can't argue with that, Bucky.  There is something to be said for carrying oneself how this guy is though.

you’re right, the NCAA would be a better place with more Tony Bennett’s.

Also, he’s been at UVA for ten years, has made close to 30 million dollars in salary since he arrived and currently makes over $17,000 a day in his job as head basketball coach.

Quote from Tony:

"[My wife] Laurel and I are in a great spot, and in the past I've had increases in my contract," Bennett said in the news release. "We just feel a great peace about where we're at, all that's taken place, and how we feel about this athletic department and this community and this school. I love being at UVA.”

I bet he does! “I’m ok with my 4 million a year in salary and the hundreds of thousands I earn in bonuses a year.”

What a guy!

Here's what he did with 1/8 of his annual paycheck:

To put the cherry on top, Bennett and his wife Laurel have pledged $500,000 toward a career-development program started to assist current and former UVa men’s basketball players as they go pro in something other than sports.

This is how you build a perennial top program.

Do you get paid to do PR for the NCAA Herbal?

No Bucky, my time at UVA helped me develop critical thinking skills and figure out how to earn a living on my own.

Your point about sharing the wealth with the players isn't invalid, but your analysis of Tony Bennett's gesture, and the impact getting into his program is having on the young men he coaches seems off base.  He's doing good in a world where that doesn't happen enough, and that is a cause for celebration.

I'm not being paid by UVA to promote this.  I already received a great education and college experience from them.  I thank the generosity of my parents for that, and am trying to honor that by being a good son to them and a positive force in the world.  I'm human, so I make mistakes, but I try to learn from them and be better.

Looking forward to the 2019-2020 NCAA Men's Basketball season.  The defending champs lost Deandre Hunter, Ty Jerome and Kyle Guy to the pros, Jack Salt to graduation, and Marco (forget his last name) to a transfer.  They still have point guard Kihei Clark, combo forward Braxton Key and big men Mamadi Diakite and Jack Huff, and a group of incoming new talent.  The ACC is the deepest conference out there, so the hill is steep, but having TB there to coach them gives me confidence that this year will go well while the Hauser kid sits out for his transfer year. The 2020 class is going to be one of the best incoming classes UVA has ever seen.
