Smart move. They seem poised for a late career revival. You all will have a blast, and you'll share the memories with your family forever.
I caught up with an old friend of mine from Seattle, who is now living up in the Western Montana mountains, at the second night of Phish in Seattle. He and his six year old son were seeing the Seattle and Berkeley shows. Looked like they were having a great experience.
Somehow I convinced my parents to make my older brother who was home on break from college to take me to see ELP when I was 10 for my birthday. It was GA too. It all turned out fine other than ending up posting on this board.
Well sure, it's important to pay attention to your kid and discuss what's going on, but none of that happens if you don't buy the ticket. My folks never took me to Rock 'n Roll shows, but they instilled a sense of adventure by taking me with them on their travels. Creating spaces for meaningful experiences, whether it be visits to parks, museums, libraries, restaurants, historic sites, beaches, mountain trails, monuments, and concerts, etc., gives the opportunity for that interaction and shared collective memory. Those experiences produce more well-rounded, couscous global citizens. I applaud the effort.
While my folks never took me to a Rock & Roll show, they did take me to The Met to see The Nutcracker as a five year old. The opulence of the venue, the concertgoers all dressed to the nines, and the quality of the staging and production all seemed magical to me and left a profound and life-long impression. They also took me to see symphony orchestras, Jazz at Preservation Hall in New Orleans, Bluegrass at church revival retreats, and Gospel choirs. They shared their love of music, and nurtured my own.
Importantly, at a certain point, they let me go have my own experiences, instead of being helicopter parents. At 15 years old, my dad gave me four front row seats and back stage passes to The Rolling Stones on the Tattoo You tour to share with my friends. Once I jumped on the GD bus, they never complained, and would enjoy the stories I'd share of my trips. I just wish I'd been able to return the favor and take them to a show.
