Tyler Childers (and the new young guard)

Forums:

I saw Tyler for the 1st time last night at the Hollywood Bowl. The show was excellent. One of the best uses of the stage and lighting I have seen in the bowl. Show was a wonderful mix spanning, what now is a pretty large and diverse catalog. Mix of country, gospel, bluegrass and yes, psychedelia. Man is at the top of his game. Show started with Indian styled group, tablas and chanting Hare Hare....was an interesting intro. Show was sold out. Diverse mix (of white people), but teenie bopper country gals to heads like me. I was surprised, I guess, by how into it the crowd was, including sing alongs to many of the tunes.

He had a surprising mid-bowl appearance where he sang 1-2 solo and a couple with other band members. The whole expensive part of the bowl was forced to turn around. This was very deliberate, along with his choice of opener. Opened the show with a super tripped out version of Trudy and there were 2-3 others (whitehouse road), that went out there. Fantastic band, and vocalist.

he also ended the show with the Indian Hare Hare band >  A Long and Violent History, which he posted the poem "First they came for..." I felt the show had both a political and spiritual wake up call.

this whole outlaw meets pop country is interesting and shows there is some hope for the general country population.

anyhoo...Tyler along with Charlie Crockett, Sturgil and Ryan Bingham are putting out THE GOODS. Go see them. Nice to see younger artists in their prime.

Tyler Childers, much like his contemporaries such as Jason Isbell and Kacey Musgraves, has never been one to shy away from expressing his politics and beliefs quite regularly. Being one of the most prominent liberal voices in the genre, the “Whitehouse Road” singer has never shied away from speaking out on controversial topics.

This, of course, was highlighted most prominently on his 2020 album, Long Violent History. Though eight of the nine songs present on the record were instrumentals, the album’s closer and title track was written in response to the infamous killing of fellow Kentuckian, Breonna Taylor, as well as the prominence of the Black Lives Matter movement making waves through the country at the time.

The song has remained a prominent piece of his discography for many liberal-minded country and Americana listeners, but despite this, it had never been played live. That all changed last night in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl.

Since June 6th, Los Angeles has been the focal point of nearly every news cycle due to the ongoing protests and riots taking place throughout the city. With protesters clashing with the LAPD, ICE agents and the military throughout the past five days, Los Angeles has become the epicenter of the current conversation on immigration in the country.

With Childers’ upcoming show taking place in the same city, many were speculating what statement the 33-year-old singer/songwriter would make in response to the controversy. This response, of course, was to close his sold-out show with the aforementioned “Long Violent History.”

During the performance, Childers displayed Pastor Martin Niemoller’s 1946 poem, “First They Came,” which was originally written as a condemnation of Nazi Germany post-World War II.

First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me

Despite “First They Came” being written in response to Nazi-occupied Germany at the time, the poem has taken on new life in the 21st century for a multitude of different social justice causes. In this case, it’s clear that Childers decided to use both his song and Niemoller’s poem to condemn the current violence being displayed by both ICE agents and, potentially, some violent protesters.

Childers, in typical fashion, gave no prelude or speech before the performance, simply letting the song speak for itself.

John Prine was on the Tyler Childers train early on.

Thanks for the report, Turtle.

Hell. Doesn't want to cooperate. Just read the story and click the link to his performance at the bottom if you want to see it.

Turns out I don't hate country music, I just needed to hear Tyler Childers and Sierra Ferrell to change my mind. Fun fact TC wrote Charleston Girl about SF.

Colter Wall is another good one, turtle

Sierra, Billy, Sturgill, Tyler, Charlie and Colter play annually in OKC and Tulsa. The Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa is a great, small venue to attend. I need to get out more.

The first song I heard by Colter Wall. I was surprised his voice does not match his young face https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwu8SCcNjvQ

Colter is great.

all these guys been coming through as of late...too bad they are all now a pretty expensive ticket. Bingham shows $50 something for GA Wiltern....which is a deal.

here's a little taste of tyler https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXTkNEr_QH0

i live between LA/SD so every damned show is a logistical cluster fuck.

If you're interested in finding great "new" musicians that are still affordable to see in small venues, I really like Western AF, KEXP, and GEMS on youtube. They all consistently bring fantastic little known artists in for live in studio performances. I randomly saw a Sierra Ferrell performance a few years ago during the covid shut down on GEMSonVHS, Tyler too. Glad I at least got to see Sierra perform in small clubs for a steal when I did!

"get me higher than the grocery bill" is a great lyric

Good article from 2017 about Sturgill helping Tyler get his recognition.

oh yeah, Robert Earl Keen was also on the bill...

Silverada is coming soon too...

also, I'd like to stress how much of an ARTIST Tyler is. The show really highlighted his diversity, message(s) and artistic flair. I felt it really was a Show instead of just a concert.

ps. the Texas Gentlemen are Bingham's backup band. LA on a F is a tough road though...

thanks dise, I will take a listen.
